Whether you are landed gentry, a common farmer, or a young lady with no parents or prospects, Miss Emma Woodhouse of Highbury will be sure to put you in your place-matrimonially or otherwise. Jane Austen's Emma plays on Book-It Repertory Theatre's stage at the Center House Theatre October 20- November 22.
Jane Austen's fourth novel is a sparkling comedy of 19th-century manners centering on the well-intentioned Emma and her sometimes indiscreet, often misapplied, and always entertaining efforts as matchmaker. Clever, intelligent, and spoiled, Emma takes it upon herself to arrange a suitable marriage for her poor friend Harriet. But despite her advantages, she is oblivious to the true nature of almost everyone around her-including herself-until at last she happily loses her own heart. Austen's deliciously droll descriptions, ironic observations, and generous happy endings are Book-It fan favorites.
Jane Austen was born December 16, 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke in England, »

It's time for The Notebook fans to grab a box of tissues and plan for their Februaries and romance-filled Valentine's Day dates. Cinematical has just received this exclusive snuggle-centric poster for Dear John, which just so happens to be the latest adaptation from Notebook scribe Nicholas Sparks. Directed by Lasse Hallström (helmer behind The Cider House Rules) Dear John stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, and will be hitting screens on February 5.
This time around, Sparks' story focuses on a soldier home on leave (Tatum), and the "idealistic college student" he falls for during her Spring vacation (Seyfried). Over the course of seven years, they must face his increasingly dangerous deployments, seeing each other face-to-face rarely, but keeping the affair alive through overseas love letters that "eventually triggers fateful consequences." War movies might be the sore vein to tap in Hollywood, but something »

Since Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi film, Inception, premiered its teaser trailer in August, news and footage from the film have been rolling out steadily.
Today, we got word that Inception would receive a dual release in both standard 35mm and in IMAX. Check out the full text of the press release from the IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. below for the details and our thoughts.
IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan (”The Dark Knight”) and starring multiple Oscar(R) nominee Leonardo DiCaprio (”Blood Diamond,” “The Aviator”), will be released to IMAX(R) theatres simultaneously with the film’s wide release in conventional theatres on July 16, 2010. The film marks the third IMAX project for Christopher Nolan, following the record-breaking IMAX release of “The Dark Knight,” which grossed more than $65 million at IMAX theatres. IMAX has just announced that Christopher Nolan’s latest film “Inception” will be released next year in IMAX. Great news, right? Unfortunately, the news could be better and here’s why: since the film was shot using conventional 35mm cameras and not using the actual IMAX cameras, the IMAX release is going to be using the IMAX Dmr technology to blow up the image to fill the screen. So while it’ll still look good, it won’t be the oh my god quality that was “The Dark Knight”. Look, I’m still extremely excited to see “Inception” in IMAX, I just wish at least part of it was shot using real IMAX cameras. Anyway, we’ve been sent a press release and it’s after the jump. It’s filled with the usual stuff that says how excited everyone is to be working together.

Charlize Theron began her career as just another pretty face in movies like 2 Days In The Valley and The Cider House Rules, but it was her star-turning role in the Academy Award winning film, Monster that earned her not only an Oscar but also the respect of her critics and peers alike. She followed that up with a strong performance in the film In the Valley of Elah and another Oscar nomination for her work in North Country. Now, the acclaimed actress is back again with a gritty, realistic and heart-shattering performance in Guillermo Arriaga's directorial debut, "The Burning Plain. I had the opportunity to speak exclusively with Charlize Theron about her powerful new performance in the film, which opens on September 18th.

Hello, all. Kieran here (aka the Know nothing Know it All). Ten years ago today, M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense hit multiplexes to massive audience and critical acclaim. Massive (it bears repeating). Shyamalan was essentially unknown, as was little Haley Joel Osment (the film's star, even though he landed a supporting actor Oscar nod). Still, the film spent five weeks at number one spot at the box office—no small feat these days for films not about Batman. 2009 is more than half over, and only two films have managed to remain number one for two or more consecutive weeks—Paul Blart and Transformers (yikes). The Sixth Sense achieved a lot of cultural capital.
Revisit it. It's still utterly watchable, not for the moments where it genuinely scares you (of which, there are plenty) but for its moments of true human drama. Plus, I love a film that's both »

This letter arrives via Rex Wockner, a San Diego- based syndicated journalist via author Edmund White. Author John Irving (The World According to Garp, The Cider House Rules) wrote his thoughts on same sex marriage in Vermont and emailed them to author Edmund White, asking him to forward them on. Edmund White wrote: Dear Rex--Here is a letter to me from the famous (straight) novelist John Irving (The World According to Garp) about the marriage bill in Vermont. He would like you to make it widely available. Thanks, Edmund White Dear Edmund It's interesting that, as you and I are comparing our calendars to see when we might get together in Vermont -- and while we are both engaged in overseeing the editing and copy-editing phase of our new books -- my fellow Vermonters are deciding the fate of a gay marriage... »

Top 10 Most Bewildering Academy Award Best Picture Nominees Scratching your noggin over the Oscar love for The Reader? How did those dastardly has-been Weinstein brothers budge The Dark Knight(if you're a whiny fanboy) or The Wrestler(if you're a whiny film snob) out of a deserving Best Picture nomination with a movie no one seems to care for? Well it's not the first time the Weinsteins have pulled off such a feat. Yet, nor are they the only Hollywood salesmen to ram a film into the Oscar race. It's hard to imagine Oscar without some sort of surprise. Sometimes it's for the better sometimes it is just plain astonishing and almost seems to be done simply to say, "Hey, we're the Academy, we do what we want." Every year they sprinkle their categories with nominations that leave a lot of folks wondering just how the hell that happened and »

If you've read Nicholas Sparks' novel 'Dear John', then you know that Channing Tatum's character John befriends an autistic little boy by the name of Alan. Autism is a brain development disorder characterized by impaired social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.
In an effort to be as realistic as possible, the film decided to cast Braeden Reed, a 6-year-old boy living with autism, in the role of Alan to shine a light on how those affected with the condition can successfully function in the world.
The cast and crew praised the debut performance of Braeden when principal photography on 'Dear John' wrapped in late December. Braeden's portrayal of Alan earned the respect of his accomplished director Lasse Hallstrom ('The Cider House Rules', 'Chocolat'), as well as his more seasoned co-stars Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried ('Mamma Mia!', HBO's "Big Love »

Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's popular series of Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, the movie finds the title character (Cera) having to defeat his girlfriend's seven evil ex-boyfriends in order to win her heart.
