A tense and exciting trip to a Brazil run for guns for hire. In roadside bar in a border town between Brazil and Paraguay, two killers, the young Toninho, a car thief and rather a wide-boy, and the veteran Alfredão, an old style gun slinger with his own code of ethics, await the arrival of the man to be eliminated. While they wait, they tell stories of the region's most celebrated killer and his involvement with the wife of a powerful landowner.
With the use of dramatic flash backs. the film lends a modern aspect to a rural environment where guns and money dictate the law. "Os Matadores(Belly Up)" confirms the talent already demonstrated in Director Beto Brant's short lengh films. Winner of prizes for direction, photography, editing and the Critics Award at the 1997 Gramado Film Festival.
This is really a stylish brazilian gangster movie with a lot of energy. "Os Matadores (Belly Up)" runs through the genre cliches in the amusingly unexpected setting of the Brazil-Paraguay border. Directing his first feature, Beto Brant shows his power and a talent for using camera and editing to keep the story loping along.
One of the greatest crime movies of the 90's!
