Angela Bassett Attacks Hollywood Treatment of Older Women

21 August 2002 | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Angela Bassett has attacked Hollywood's attitude to age - because women are the only ones shunned as they get older. Bassett, who received an Oscar nomination for her turn as singer Tina Turner in What's Love Got To Do With It, complains that Tinseltown's ageing leading men are often considered a good match with young actresses, while the middle-aged female stars are lumbered into the "over the hill" category. The screen star, 44, says, "I think a man figures he can get a young girl. He could be 90 years old and get Anna Nicole Smith. But a woman is 40 and she's over the hill. They're not gonna cast you in movies. You know ... suddenly you're not gifted ... you're not attractive. But of course, you are." But one area Bassett is happy to see slowly changing in Hollywood is the attitude towards black actors. She explains, "I'm proud of the progress Hollywood is making. When I read for roles sometimes - like Strange Days, The Score or Supernova - my characters aren't defined by skin type. We're all human beings, and I hope we keep moving toward that." »
