The folks at our sister site Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best -- and worst -- the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between: There's a new website called Glyde that lets you buy and sell DVDs quite easily. Now you can get rid of all of those ill-advised Zac Efron purchases that you're hanging on to. Viggo Mortensen is getting ready to star in The Road, the adaptation of the Cormac McCarthey novel. He has some crazy eyes in that movie, which could either be a big plus or a big minus, depending on your stance on the hotness level of dudes with crazy eyes. In any case, Cinematical has an interview with him. I actually had no idea that there was going to be a fourth Shrek movie, »

A new trailer has landed for Michael Cera’s split-personality comedy Youth in Revolt. The film’s premise is pretty quirky and involves a lovelorn geek inventing a new persona – Francois Dillinger – in order to bag the girl, he thinks is “the one”.
With its timid loser finding inner strength through mischief, it comes across as a teenage version of Fight Club (and that’s no bad thing). Co-starring Justin Long and Zack Galifianakis, Youth in Revolt, looks a likely prospect for best black comedy of 2010. Will Francois Dillinger enter film history as the 21st century’s Tyler Durden? Only time will tell. Either way, it’s a great name.

By all accounts, 1999 was one of the best years in film history, featuring an amazing glut of debuts and career-defining follow-ups from a rich and varied roster of directors who are steadily working some ten years later. For example American Beauty, which was also released in '99, was one of the first films revisited in our "Shelf Life" series, and it seemed most likely to lose its luster, especially given its Oscar win and almost universal critical acclaim, but thankfully the film sustained most of its initial appeal and impact.
Fight Club, meanwhile, faced markedly more polarizing reactions from audiences and critics, although like Alan Ball and Sam Mendes' film it captured a moment in the zeitgeist that made it important almost regardless of how good it was. Ten years later, Fox Home Entertainment just released the film on Blu-ray in a gorgeous new set, and after a decade »

It’s been a while since we heard anything regarding the movie adaptation of Robert Powell’s cult comic book, The Goon. In fact, last time we wrote about the movie was all the way back in March when we got to see some concept art and the first official poster. Given the enthusiastic reaction to that first look, we were beginning to wonder why there was so much radio silence on the project. Now, thanks to Comic Book Resources, we have the answer.
According to Goon creator, Eric Powell, there has actually been a fair bit of progress on the movie. Not only is the script for the film is complete, but CG animation house Blur Studios has begun producing a variety of test material. At this point, the only holdup is producer David Fincher, who has to complete filming on his own movie before he can turn to Goon in earnest. »

When you talk about the year of cinema that was 1999, there are the films that come immediately. Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, Eyes Wide Shut. I love The Insider, have a soft spot for eXistenZ and Three Kings and then it starts getting complicated, as films like American Beauty, Girls Don’t Cry, and The Green Mile haven’t exactly weathered as well, while films like Office Space have only grown in estimation. At the time, most wouldn’t have listed Galaxy Quest as one of the great films of 1999, and yet ten years later, someone like David Mamet can call it a perfect movie. And it is. By Grabthar’s Hammer, my review of Galaxy Quest after the jump.
The premise is simple: what if aliens watched Star Trek and thought it was real? Tim Allen plays Jason Nesmith who plays Peter Quincy Taggart, the Kirk character »

Life lesson #1: Never trust DVD menus. They are programmed by humans, and humans lie. Therefore, DVD menus lie. If you buy one and the menu looks wrong, do not show fear. Just stand firm and call your player a filthy liar. Life lesson #2: Don't teach your newborn a fictional alien language instead of English. That is cruel. What's the matter with you? Life lesson #3: Don't take life lessons from a man on the internet. Wait, what's going on? Oh, right, movie updates. Here they are.

Every once in a while, we hit upon a milestone year in cinema with 1939 remaining the gold standard, as that year saw the release of such timeless classics as Gone With The Wind, The Wizard Of Oz, Gunga Din, Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, and Goodbye Mr. Chips. Another notable year would be 1967, with Bonnie & Clyde, In The Heat Of The Night, The Graduate & Guess Who.S Coming To Dinner. More recently, I.d say that 1999 was a phenomenal year in cinema. It saw the release of Fight Club,... »

Where's the animated feature based on Eric Powell's horror-comedy comic title "The Goon"? Good question. In March , some images surfaced - a small taste of what's happening at Blur Studios, the CG animators on board the project. Powell dropped some knowledge on Cbr regarding an update on its development. "I just finished writing the script a few months back, and Blur is working on a lot of test stuff," he says. "[David] Fincher is working on a film right now, so we're waiting for him to get some space so we can start showing some of this stuff off. I'm pretty happy with everything so far. We've just got to work to get to the next point. This is a slow, long process." Fincher ( Fight Club ) will most likely serve as a producer. »

It wasn't until I started writing about movies online that I found a shared love with Fight Club, but it actually seems like every single movie blogger running a movie news driven website has a special relationship with this film. As a matter of fact, I thought I loved this movie, but now realize I am a mere fan compared to the legions of followers Tyler Durden and David Fincher have amassed. Luckily this film hasn't inspired a legion of Project Mayhem followers as much as it has inspired folks to journey on a path of loving film and Fox has put together an impressive Blu-ray to make sure they can continue down that path and do so in superior high definition.
The Fight Club Blu-ray, as evidenced in the screenshots you can see at DVD Beaver, is vastly superior to the excellent 2-disc DVD I'm sure adorns every fan's shelf. »

This week wasn't as slow as it looks when it comes to movie watching as much as I saw a lot in theaters including Everybody's Fine, Me and Orson Welles, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and Ninja Assassin. I also watched John Woo's Red Cliff a second time before reviewing it as well as watched the new Fight Club Blu-ray and Criterion's Blu-ray for Gomorrah, both of which will be reviewed and online Monday and Tuesday. So, when you see just one title below I'm not point-shaving, just have a lot left to talk about later on. Oh, and I am seeing A Single Man on Sunday afternoon.
A Christmas Carol (1951) Quick Thoughts: I had never seen this 1951 classic interpretation of Charles Dickens's story and with the recent disappointment that was Robert Zemeckis's film I was curious as to what the big deal was with this film »

Terminator – The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Terminator Salvation
DVD & Blu-ray, Warner, Sony
If nothing else, watching McG's Terminator Salvation at least puts Christian Bale's infamous on-set meltdown into perspective; if you had to pretend to be angry for so long in front of the camera then you'd probably end up angry in real life. Bale's angry John Connor is a one-note performance, the problem being it's the wrong note. That's not the only drawback: McG has a similar one-dimensional take on the material. He seems to think the Terminator films are about robots and explosions and nothing else. And Bale has to share the narrative with Sam Worthington's turn as an unwilling cyborg, the result being the film plays as if it has two competing co-stars and no real direction. Far more Terminator-ish is the now-cancelled TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles, led by Lena Headey. Science-fiction television shows, »

Blu-ray Review
Directed by: David Fincher
Cast: Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Meat Loaf, Helena Bonham Carter, Jared Leto
Running Time: 2 hrs 20 mins
Rating: R
Due Out: November 17, 2009
Plot: An insomniac thirty something (Norton) with no purposeful existence meets an anarchist (Pitt). Together they start a “fight club,” which evolves into an underground society that offers men more happiness than the possessions that have ruled their lives.
Who’S It For? By appearance, Fight Club is a guy’s movie, a bonanza of machoness that has dudes beating each other in order to achieve catharsis. However, the mind of Fight Club extends far beyond the action movie genre, and is presented with an aesthetic brilliance that is worth a viewing itself.

I admit, I went into Jj Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek (Paramount, Rated PG-13, Blu-Ray-$39.99 Srp) not wanting to like it, based on my less than enthusiastic view of Abrams’ previous work and a healthy level of fondness for Trek (when it was done right - not in the crap Berman/Braga/Voyager/Enterprise/latter-day films era). If any picture was the movie to usher in the new millennium, it was David Fincher's Fight Club. To me, it was the movie of the 1990s -- as prescient as Network was in the 1970s towards the future of "news," and as equally misunderstood. As Fight Club revealed and essentially, proselytized, we live in a world where we seek to express ourselves, either through conspicuous consumption, or following philosophies for supposed betterment, or to simply remember what it was like to actually feel like a man after the world has feminized us so (something as a woman I find frustrating and heartbreaking -- let men be men again). But Fight Club isn't saying something as simple and inane as men are pussies. It's not a dumb jock statement of being a "man." Rather, it shows how through the alienation of social institutions, and the de-masculination... »
