'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna' (2006)
Director Karan Johar has built a wildly successful career making movies about Indians living in the West. Non-resident Indians, as they're called, are a lucrative foreign box-office market (Indians are the wealthiest ethnic group in the U.S.) and films about them are a significant Bollywood subgenre. Johar has his finger on the pulse of the privileged and he's expert at scrutinizing their emotional lives. For all their trendy clothes and cool jobs and swanky homes, they struggle—at least personally.
Johar's films sometimes focus on the difficulties of maintaining an Indian identity in another culture, but in 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna,' the ethnicity of the Indian characters living in New York City is incidental, and so is their wealth. The story revolves around two unhappily married couples seeking the only thing they don't possess: love.

Willie Garson is one of the stars of the USA Network's latest hit series White Collar, which airs on Friday nights at 10 Pm Et on the USA Network. Garson recently held a conference call to discuss his role in the series, and here's what he had to say.
What was it about this particular show or about the script that drew you back to TV?
Willie Garson: Well, I found the script to be very interesting and very timely. Certainly, we all have been reading about a lot of people figuring out ways to scam and get money for doing nothing, other than figuring out a way to get over on hard working people. So I thought that was a really interesting time for a show like this.
What's the most challenging aspect of your role?
Willie Garson: That's an interesting question. The most challenging aspect was for me, »

There was talk earlier this year that it wasn't in the studios' best interest to continue to release classic films on DVD/Blu-ray as the demand for them was dwindling and the cost of restoration was climbing. The article in question even quotes Warner Home Video senior vice president George Feltenstein saying "most of the studios have pretty much said 'Screw it, we're out of here, we're not going to do this.'" Strangely enough, it just so happens Warner Home Video is the home entertainment studio releasing the very first Alfred Hitchcock film on Blu-ray, 50 years after its theatrical release with a restoration price tag I have read cost upwards of $1 million. Perhaps studios are slowing down the release of their classic films, but with Warner's recent Blu-ray release of The Wizard of Oz, the upcoming release of Gone With the Wind and this release of North by Northwest »

Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy smiled and waved in NYC on Friday as the Christmas Carol train tour pulled into Grand Central Station. Jim was soon off to film an appearance on Good Morning America, as he begins promoting his holiday movie before its release next Friday. He's still rocking the beard we saw him sporting earlier this month, and it might come in handy for Jim as he heads into Winter. Akiva Goldsman is a very busy man. He’s also someone that fandom has never been happy with. That’s because as the producer or screenwriter of films like “Batman Forever”, “Lost in Space”, “The Da Vinci Code”, “I Am Legend”, “Angels & Demons”, and “Hancock”, he’s easily pointed at for problems with the adaptations. But no matter what fandom thinks, the films he’s involved with make tons of money, so he’s not going anywhere.
Anyway, he’s currently developing movie versions of “Lobo” and “Swamp Thing”, and he might direct his first feature and it’s looking like it’ll be “Winter’s Tale”, which is Mark Helprin’s 1983 fantasy about an alternate-history New York, a thief and flying white horse. So if you’re curious about any of the projects, hit the jump to read what he had to say:

There is nothing more confusing or mind-numbing than the best foreign language film race. Each nation submits one contender and the five nominees are determined by a specific Academy committee. The winner is then judged only by members of the Academy who have to prove they've seen all five selections. In the past decasde this has caused great films such as "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" and "Persepolis" not to get recognized and for films such as "Four Days in September," "Central Station," "Hero" and last year's "Waltz with Bashir" to lose to movies universally less regarded by... »

Photo: Touchstone Home Entertainment Ten years ago I went to see The Sixth Sense at a midnight showing in Mizner Park. I heard it was a solid, creepy horror film with a "cool" ending. I remember the experience of watching it and leaving the theater with a Whoa, I just saw something feeling. It's the type of movie you can't wait to tell everyone else about. And the best thing: you could recommend it to virtually anyone. When I left, for example, Fight Club, I had a great movie high, but I knew I couldn't talk excitedly to everyone about it. Fight Club just isn't for everybody. The Sixth Sense was a completely different situation. I couldn't think of a single soul who wouldn't like it, and it was clear to me M. Night Shyamalan had tapped into something cosmic.

Eminem's music video for his new single "Beautiful" has finally made its way out after being previewed through a clip. It shows the rapper performing in Detroit's Tiger Stadium, old Packard Motor Car company plant and once-grand Beaux-Arts train station Michigan Central Station.
Commenting on the video, Eminem previously said, "Tiger Stadium is being torn down, and the train station is supposed to be demolished too. This video is one of the last times anybody outside of Detroit is going to see them." He added, "I wrote 'Beautiful' when I was really down, during a difficult time struggling with my addiction."
"It's a reminder to keep your head up, and to see who you really are despite what you may be going through. Now that I've gotten through the toughest part, I see how the song relates to Detroit, and it feels even more powerful to me."

America and Bollywood are quite taken with each other these days. It started out as a flirtation many years ago, with occasional teases that seemed promising but failed to lead anywhere. And then a little movie called 'Slumdog Millionaire' came along, and even though it was not a product of Bollywood, it pitched America into a full-blown affair with India and its cinema.
However, the heady new relationship almost immediately hit a bump. Bollywood producers boycotted multiplex cinemas in India for two months this spring, refusing to release new films because of a revenue-sharing dispute. The timing of the boycott was unfortunate from an American perspective. Just when a fresh crop of fans wanted to see Indian movies—and more mainstream U.S. theaters were starting to show them—the boycott happened.
But disappointing newcomers was the least of Bollywood’s problems. The boycott is estimated to have »

Eminem doesn't update his Twitter very often, but in the past two days he has dropped a pair of exclusive photos from the set of the video shoot for "Beautiful," from his recent Relapse LP.
According to the Tweets, the clip was shot last week in Detroit. Though it's difficult to determine what the plot of the video might be, the second photo shows Em posing in front of an old train station (it appears to be Michigan Central Station, a long-abandoned Gothic behemoth).
"The old train station ... that place is unreal," Eminem wrote. The first photo showed Eminem standing in front of a window — likely from inside the station — looking out onto Detroit in stark black and white.

The remake of “The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3” starring John Travolta and Denzel Washington hits theaters today, and while we’ve posted lists in the past that tied into the week’s premieres, I felt like this was the perfect opportunity to spotlight one comic in particular… or rather, its cover.
While Washington has squared off against a wide variety of villains (and heroes) in his long movie career, his pursuit of train-hijacker Travolta in “Pelham 1 2 3″ keeps reminding me of one of my favorite covers from my own collection of “Amazing Spider-Man” issues. Sure, the wall-crawler has been victorious against Doctor Octopus, Venom and any number of other super-powered foes — but how will he fare when he takes on…. (wait for it)… “The Commuter”?!
Created by artist Mark Bright, the cover to “Amazing Spider-Man” #267 is the first thing that comes to mind every time I hear a mention of “Pelham 1 2 3,” for some reason. »

Former Law & Order star Jill Hennessy has developed a career as a New York street busker if her acting career ever ends - because she already knows where the best places to play Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell hits are.
The star performed on the city's subway and at Big Apple landmarks as she struggled to become an actress - and she made a good living doing it.
Hennessy still performs - she recently played a concert at her son's pre-school - and now she's hungry to hit the streets again and play her favourite places.
She tells WENN, "When I was playing the subways I would stay in the station and the acoustics were really good on the 1-and-9 line by 79th and Broadway. You’d always get someone coming up and saying, 'Can you play Joni Mitchell's Circle Game because last time I heard that my wife and I were still together?' and they would tell me their whole life story.
"I would play Circle Game and somebody would cry or I would do Dylan or Springsteen covers and Patti Griffin, Green Day, Katy Perry’s I Kissed A Girl. I would also play in Washington Square Park and Central Park around the John Lennon memorial.
"If you averaged it to salary, by the hour I took home around 15 bucks. And near a holiday I made well over 20 dollars an hour.
"My dream is to play at Grand Central Station because the acoustics are amazing." »

One of my editors at the Sun-Times once asked me, "Roger, is it true that they used to let reporters smoke at their desks?" This wasn't asked yesterday; it must have been ten years ago. I realized then, although I'm only writing about it now, that a lifestyle had disappeared. When I entered the business in the autumn of my 16th year, newspapering seemed the most romantic and exciting thing I could possibly do with my life. "But honey," my mom said, "they don't pay them anything." Who cared? It involved knowing what was going on before anyone else did, and putting my byline on top of a story telling it to the world. "Roger Ebert" is only a name. "By Roger Ebert" are the three most magical words in the language, drawing my eye the same way a bulls-eye attracts an arrow.

- Brazil Film News: Local Scene A new record Brazilian cinema has just witnessed the rise of a new phenomenon at the movie theaters. The movie in question is called “Se eu fosse voce 2” (“If I were you 2”), a sequel for the 2006’s already big hit “Se eu fosse voce”. The achievement. The film became, in only its first few weeks of release, the biggest Brazilian box-office since its rebirth in 1995. A few weeks later, a new impressive record has been set: based on the profits made through theater exhibitions, it managed to enter the top 5 in history (along with the three “Spider-man” franchises and “Titanic”). The numbers gain are that much more impressive due to the poor performances at that the Brazilian box office last year (one of the worst since 95). The Story Like the first film, this second part is about the couple Claudio (Tony Ramos) and Helena (Gloria Pires) who, »

A couple days before "The International" opens wide, the first six minutes of the espionage film has been made available to view. Courtesy of MSN, the video focuses on Clive Owen's Louis Salinger and Ian Burfield's Thomas Schumer as they try to get information over the illegal activities done by International Bank of Business and Credit.
The thriller begins with a close-up shot of Salinger who despite the rain stays vigilant on watching the parked car in front of Berlin's Central Station. Inside the car, Thomas Schumer is seen talking to who seems to be an informer. Pressing to get his evidence, he arranges for another meeting with the man behind the wheel before getting out of the car.
However, before Schumer can get across the street to meet Salinger, he gets a heart attack and falls down to the ground. Seeing it, Salinger quickly makes his way towards Schumer, »
