New York Times looks at the spoilers of the decade

8 hours ago | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

It should go without saying that we here at TV Squad are infinitely familiar with spoilers, so naturally this New York Times article caught my eye. Even if it did spoil the end of The Sopranos for me. Thanks, Grey Lady!

The paper's ArtsBeat blog has declared an official moratorium on spoiler complaints and given "amnesty" for their readers to talk about the best surprise endings in the last decade. What are your favorite TV endings that you now have the right to spoil the hell out of for people too lazy to get up and discover them for themselves?

And it should go without saying: don't complain about how any of the comments below have spoiled anything for you. The only way I could make the spoiler warning any bigger is by typing the word "Spoiler" in all caps and pasting over and over in this post.

Deconstructing the Decade from 'The West Wing' and beyond: Zap2it Andrea's favorite episodes

27 December 2009 5:01 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Here comes round no. 3 of favorite episodes. My esteemed colleagues Rick and Hanh have picked their favorites and they each took considerable time preparing their list. I laughed at that -- until I sat down to do mine and it became a four-days-long project.

Here were my personal parameters for the list: 1. Each show could only have one episode on the list. 2. I would not repeat my colleagues' choices, which was particularly hard with "Buffy" and "Veronica Mars," as my top picks have been spoken for. 3. A two-parter counts as one slot on my list. My list, my rules. 4. There was a limit of 10.

Why a limit? Because my initial list had 22 entries and I realized I was basically just listing my favorite shows and then picking good episodes. I had to be more disciplined! The 12 I took off (for a variety of reasons) became "honorable mentions" of a sort. »

Review of the decade | Culture

26 December 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Twitter, Daniel Barenboim, XBox, Wg Sebald, Nicholas Hytner's National, Big Brother and The Wire... just some of the cultural highs of the noughties. From the rise of Dizzee Rascal to the emergence – at the age of 89 – of the dazzling Cuban painter Carmen Herrera, our critics pick the defining people and trends of the past 10 years

Technology

Google

Larry Page and Sergey Brin began thinking about a new kind of internet search engine in early 1996 and their company was incorporated as Google Inc in 1998. But it was in 2000 that they started selling advertising against search results and this allowed them to move into their Mountain View headquarters in California (aka the Googleplex), begin acquiring other companies (including YouTube) and drastically expand their other ambitions throughout the noughties.

The verb "to google" entered the Oxford English Dictionary in 2006 and Google dominates the search engine market despite ferocious competition from Yahoo! and Microsoft. »

Sopranos Plan New Year's Eve Party For Police & Firefighters

25 December 2009 5:26 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

The Sopranos are planning a New Year's Eve reunion to say a special thank you to 30 wounded New York servicemen.

Actor Vincent Pastore has co-organised the get together, which will culminate with a party beneath the glittering ball drop at Times Square in New York, which signals the New Year in America.

He tells Blogtalkradio.com's Let's Do Lunch show, "On New Years Eve we're putting together an event with 30 wounded warriors - policemen and firemen - sitting under the ball in Times Square.

"I've got a police escort picking me up in the Bronx to take me down to New York City with a couple of my Sopranos friends. First we're going to Johnny's Pizza to have pizza with the wounded warriors and then we'll go down to see the ball drop." »

Deconstructing the decade from 'The Shield' and beyond: Zap2it Rick's favorite episodes

23 December 2009 10:43 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

You can scarcely swing a dead cat lately without hitting some kind of best-of-the-decade list (even though, technically, the first decade of the 21st century doesn't end till next year).

Well, here comes another one. Rather than try to construct another best-shows-of-the-'00s list, though -- something that's already been done here, there and everywhere -- I decided to focus on individual episodes from 2000-09. Are these the flat-out "best" episodes of television over the past 10 years? Probably not. But these are the ones that stick with me, that I can still remember not just for brilliant lines or beautifully constructed plots, but for how I actually felt while watching them. They are, simply, my favorites.

Here's my list, in no particular order. What's yours?

"Final Grades" ("The Wire")

HBO sent critics the entire run of season four of "The Wire" before it premiered in 2006. I had watched the first »

Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Jerry Ferrara Break Up

22 December 2009 6:34 PM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Jerry Ferrara have broken up, New York Daily News has reported after being informed by a source close to "The Sopranos" actress. Break-up reports started to swirl after Sigler was spotted showing up solo for the screening of "It's Complicated" at the W Hotel in L.A. last Tuesday, December 15. "She came with a few girlfriends, and they drank wine all night. They looked like they were having a good time," a partygoer said, adding that Ferrara was nowhere to be seen.

Last Thursday, December 17, Sigler was seen hitting Susan Sarandon's NYC ping-pong bar Spin with friend Lance Bass. "Lance is a really good friend to Jamie," claimed the media's source. "He's been helping her out and giving her good advice. They were playing Ping-Pong and laughing, and it didn't seem like she was sad or anything was wrong. Lance was being really funny and entertaining her. »

Jamie-Lynn Sigler and her boyfriend, Entourage actor Jerry Ferrara, have called it quits, People has learned. Sigler, 28, and Ferrara, 30, met on the Entourage set in 2008 when Sigler joined the HBO comedy as a guest star - playing the on-screen love interest of Ferrara's character, Turtle. They soon became a couple in real life, too. "They're busy with their careers, and she in particular has a couple of movies out in 2010, and others in the works for 2011, so it's just tough," a source who knows the couple tells People. Actor Raymond Franza was arrested on Monday, after allegedly swindling almost $13,000 (£8,125) from the U.S. government.

The Sopranos star is accused of claiming $12,946 (£8,091) in disability payments over 14 months from the Social Security Administration following a car crash in 2008.

But he allegedly failed to tell officials he was collecting $4,000 (£2,500) a month in benefits from his car insurance company - which made him ineligible for state help, according to the New York Daily News.

Franza was freed on $5,000 (£3,125) bail - but faces up to seven years in prison if convicted. »

Vinnie & Mario Trailer: Pusher Director Nicolas Refn Has Another New Movie?

18 December 2009 9:12 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Or does he? I honestly don't know if this is real. I have no idea what it is, though it appears to be a trailer for a darkly comedic gangster film from director Nicolas Winding Refn. We've heard nothing about this until now. But here's some footage with David Proval from The Sopranos, John Capodice (the actor who is basically a walking incarnation of Jersey), and a decidedly grindhouse-style trailer narration. What the hell is going on with Vinnie & Mario? I was a bit gobsmacked to have a look at Twitch and see this trailer right at the top of the page. So was Twitch's Todd Brown, it seems, and he's usually way more in the loop about stuff like this than mere mortals. Besides, between making Bronson and Valhalla Rising and doing press for both, Refn couldn't have made another movie. Could he? "I used to make people disappear, »

Californication Season 3 Finale : Well Played Kapinos Onward to Season 4

14 December 2009 11:12 AM, PST | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

“You’re gonna die poor, drunk… and alone.” The season 3 finale of Californication was its best episode ever. If you’ve been following Californication since day one, then each moment was even more rewarding than the next. Mia’s (Madeline Zima) return could have been a simple gimmick, but it wasn’t. The drama tied up three seasons of push and pull between Karen (Natascha McElhone) and Hank (David Duchovny), with the love of Becca (Madeleine Martin) dangling in the middle. While everyone gasps over the season finale of Dexter, watching this Trinity unfold was just as satisfying. We knew that Hank’s secret about Mia would be exposed at some point, but we never really had an episode that fully explored the mental impact of Hank’s sexual indiscretions. Taking a page from The Sopranos’ creator David Chase, Tom Kapinos created a semi-dream episode that revolved around Hank’s emotional abyss. »

Golden Globes: Which new shows will make the cut?

10 December 2009 9:01 PM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

The Golden Globes tend to be pretty difficult to predict, but one thing that has been pretty reliable in recent years has been the willingness to recognize new TV series at the awards.

Which could make for a very crowded comedy field this year.

The mini-renaissance of TV comedy this year, on both broadcast and cable networks, could land several new shows in the best comedy series category when the nominations are announced Tuesday. In fact, it's not inconceivable to envision an all-new field in the category, made up of, say, "Glee," "Modern Family," "Cougar Town," "Nurse Jackie" and "United States of Tara."

Ok, so that's probably also not very likely. It's hard to see last year's winner, "30 Rock," getting overlooked, and probably at least one of the other 2008 nominees -- "Californication," "Entourage," "The Office" and "Weeds" -- will make the cut too ("The Big Bang Theory," which has become a top-15 hit this year, »

Blu-Ray Review: First Season of HBO’s ‘The Sopranos’ Comes to HD

9 December 2009 6:43 PM, PST | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The network that redefined TV on DVD has some catching up to do when it comes to Blu-Ray. When you buy a Blu-Ray player for that TV-loving viewer in your family, they can buy all five seasons of “Lost,” the complete series of “Battlestar Galactica,” and even the original “Star Trek” on Blu-Ray, but most HBO series are just catching up. With an excellent recent release for “Rome,” the studio/network now turns its gaze to the best program of the ’00s with the first season of “The Sopranos”.

Blu-Ray Rating: 4.0/5.0

What more is there to say about “The Sopranos”? It changed television more than any program in decades, setting a new standard for the kind of complex, character-driven storytelling that could be accomplished in the hour-long format. With uniformly remarkable performances from the entire cast and iconic characters, “The Sopranos” transcended just being another TV show to become a true cultural phenomenon. »

The Perfectionist: Matthew Weiner Turns the World Mad

7 December 2009 12:05 PM, PST | TVGuide.com - Features | See recent TVGuide - Features news »

Long before he was an awards show darling at the helm of one of the most obsessively consumed shows on television, Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner was a bitter hater. "I think expressing myself changed [that], and realizing that it was all my problem, and that if I wanted my life to be different, it was up to me," Weiner says. His expression has become a smoke-filled, whiskey-soaked drama about capitalism, consumption, and careerism at their highest and lowest. It's an incisive look at American history, a titillating tale of sex and power, and a heartbreaking story of a doomed marriage. We chatted with Weiner, one of the influential television industry players interviewed for TVGuide.com's Best of the Decade section, about the enormous success of his show, what tips he took from his stint on The Sopranos, and TV becoming more powerful than movies.
