Invictus Writer Will Dive Into Deep Sea Cowboys

25 November 2009 4:28 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Writer Anthony Peckman will trade Nelson Mandela for a salvage crew. The Invictus writer has been recruited to pen the screenplay for Deep Sea Cowboys, an Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci-produced action film based on an article written by Joshua Davis for Wired. The article provides a real-time experience of a team of men trying to recover a ship.s precious cargo after it topples to one side. Back in February, it was announced that David Ayer (Training Day) was the scribe selected, but the deal must have fallen through. The THR article notes that Ayer .previously worked on the script. but makes no mention of a reason for his replacement. While it makes perfect sense for the U-571¬ writer to tackle another at-sea travesty, Peckman has immense potential. He wrote the 2001 crime drama Don.t Say a Word, the highly anticipated Sherlock Holmes and is likely busy reveling »

"Surrogates" will be available on DVD and Blu-ray Hi-Def in January.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment announced it will release the Bruce Willis action movie on January 26. The movie, referred to by Collider.com critic Matt Goldberg as "high-octane action," will come complete with a variety of special features for an enhanced viewing experience.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, the movie is set in a futuristic society where robot bodies outnumber those of actual humans. The robots, surrogates, are made in the likeness of people who control them from their home. Without any risk of danger, the surrogates allow users to experience an exciting life without any kind of repercussions. Among the users is FBI agent Tom Greer (Willis), who is called upon to solve a mystery involving the surrogates, which are beginning to malfunction, killing their users. And when »

The box office weekend ahead – Surrogates looks to top the chart.

25 September 2009 1:43 AM, PDT | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

The box office weekend ahead promises a buffet of films looking to satisfy the science fiction, horror and musical fans. Bruce Willis starrer “Surrogates” should be the one to back for a top spot, dropping current topper “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.” The Touchstone Pictures science fiction thriller helmed by Jonathan Mostow (“Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines,” “U-571”) unspools via Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures into 2,951 locations. Also in the cast are Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Boris Kodjoe, James Francis Ginty, Michael Cudlitz with James Cromwell and Ving Rhames. Science fiction horror “Pandorum” should keep fans of the genre on the edge of their seats under the direction of “Antibodies” helmer Christian Alvart. Overture Films distributes the eerie looking film with Dennis Quaid, Ben Foster, Cam Gigandet, Antje Traue, Cung Le, Eddie Rouse, André Hennicke and Norman Reedus into 2,400 locations. »

Surrogates Review

24 September 2009 10:58 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Surrogates Directed by: Jonathan Mostow Written by: Michael Ferris and John Brancato (screenplay), Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele (graphic novel) Starring: Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, James Cromwell, Rosamund Pike, Ving Rhames, Boris Kodjoe It's been a pretty solid year for science-fiction films thus far, with movies like Moon, District 9 and Watchmen all raising the bar for thoughtful futuristic tales on the big screen in one way or another. While this is great news for moviegoers, it's unfortunate for a filmmaker who is trying to put together a big budget action/sci-fi flick later in the year that has any hope of measuring up. Case in point: Surrogates director Jonathan Mostow, who finds himself faced with the unenviable task of following all of the aforementioned films, in addition to a whole summer's worth of massive special effects blockbusters. On the one hand, he has the advantage of Mr. Bruce Willis in the lead role, »

Beverly Hills, California — It's already been a smash comic book, and we've been following its development into a movie for quite some time. Now, the Bruce Willis sci-fi flick "Surrogates" is finally hitting theaters this weekend, fueled by one very provocative question: If you had a robot doppelgänger to live life for you, what would you do with it?

"My surrogate would be fighting fires and saving the world," said Radha Mitchell, one of the stars of the film. "The surrogate could also be doing all that menial stuff. My surrogate would be doing everything. I could just relax and get a massage instead."

"I'd send him down to Washington, tell him to fire all the politicians and start looking for that $780 billion they can't seem to find, »

Interview: 'Surrogates' Director Jonathan Mostow

23 September 2009 6:32 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Jonathan Mostow is one of the "that guys" of the directing world: you almost always recognize his handiwork, but you're not quite sure who he is, because his films maintain a more assertive sense of themselves than they do of him (and we mean that as a compliment). Although he did some smaller films before then, 1997's Breakdown was his calling card as a filmmaker, and contained all of the elements that would signify something made by him - namely, an interesting idea that was executed with mastery of form and a comfortable grasp on genre conventions. Subsequently he directed the submarine thriller U-571 and Terminator 3, and his latest, Surrogates, is another example of high-concept storytelling streamlined to maximize its entertainment potential.

Cinematical recently sat down with Mostow in Los Angeles for an exclusive interview about the ins and outs of the film, which follows Bruce Willis as a cop »

4 Hi-Res Surrogates Posters With Bruce Willis

15 September 2009 8:44 AM, PDT | The Cinema Post | See recent The Cinema Post news »

We are very happy to share four hi-res posters with you for Surrogates in our special gallery below!

Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell star as FBI agents who investigate the mysterious murder of a college student linked to the man who helped create a high-tech surrogate phenomenon that allows people to purchase unflawed robotic versions of themselves – fit, good looking remotely controlled machines that ultimately assume their life roles – enabling people to experience life vicariously from the comfort and safety of their own homes. The murder spawns a quest for answers: in a world of masks, who’s real and who can you trust?

First-time author Robert Venditti came up with the unique premise while working at Top Shelf Publications in Atlanta. The publisher is known for issuing sophisticated, contemporary graphic novels and comics by artists of singular vision. Jonathan Mostow previously directed the hit films “Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines” and “U-571. »

Surrogates Edit Bay Visit

31 August 2009 | Comingsoon.net | See recent Comingsoon.net news »

With less than a month to go before Surrogates hits theaters nationwide, director Jonathan Mostow has been working long and hard to get the final cut of the film just right and recently invited ComingSoon.net/Superhero Hype! to take a peek behind the editing process as he fine-tunes his look at the not-too-distant future. You might not suspect, looking at Mostow, whose soft charisma evokes an everyday father type, that he's the man responsible for some major Hollywood blockbusters like U-571 and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines . Clearly a devotee of the source material, a 2006 comic book series by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, Mostow's biggest concern right now seems to be just how much he can pack into his sci-fi universe. In the world of Surrogates , people have... »

Beverly Hills, California — If you're on Twitter, Facebook or MySpace, chances are you have dozens of "friends" you've never actually met. If you want to purchase food, books, clothes or anything else, it can be done in your pajamas by simply typing a URL into your computer browser and waiting for the Ups dude to drop it on your porch. Second Life, Xbox Live, the Sims — log on, and let your avatar do all the work for you.

On September 25, a new sci-fi flick based on a beloved graphic novel will aim to explore the next step. But in a perfect world where we all have "Surrogates" to live our lives for us, what happens when the technology becomes fatal?

Trailer for Surrogates online

23 May 2009 3:51 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Jonathan Mostow is one of those directors I keep track of. I may not be overwhelmed with what he did with the previous installment of the Terminator franchise, but even that one had plenty of memorable images attached. As for his other movies “U-571” and “Breakdown”, those are lodged firmly in the “very enjoyable if not brilliant” part of my mental archive.

And his next is the sci-fi thriller “Surrogates”, starring Bruce Willis and based on the graphic novel by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele. It’s about a nearby future where everyone does their daily activities by using robotic doppelgangers, operated live through the internet, thereby keeping your own original body safe at home from accidents, diseases or repetitive strain injury. An intriguing concept where cops can keep being shot without actually dying, and where being run over by a bus only means a temporary wait for the insurance »

‘Surrogates’ HD trailer with Bruce Willis

21 May 2009 3:06 PM, PDT | The Cinema Post | See recent The Cinema Post news »

Surrogates” is a new movie from director Jonathan Mostow (”Terminator 3″, “U-571″) which stars Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames, Radha Mitchell and Rosamund Pike. Set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots, a cop (Willis) is forced to leave his home for the first time in years in order to investigate the murders of others’ surrogates.

You can find a HD trailer for the film embedded below. I’m not really sure what to think of it to be honest. I love the intriguing concept of “Surrogates”, which is evident in this trailer, but the awfuly over-dramatic sounding dialog and obligatory “FBI Agents” make me hesitant to get excited about it. The trailer is also badly edited, to say the least. It’s confusing and overly long.

But hey, lets not be overly negative either. Tell us what you think in the comments.

Watch This: Bruce Willis in ‘Surrogates’ Trailer

21 May 2009 1:01 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

The first trailer for the next sci-fi adventure from director Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3, U-571), Surrogates, has hit the web this afternoon via MySpace. The film stars Bruce Willis as a cop in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots. Willis' character, Agent Greer is forced to leave his own home for the first time in several years in order to investigate a series of murders of others' surrogates. The film also stars Ving Rhames, Rosamund Pike and Radha Mitchell. Have a look at the first trailer below: Looks a little Die Hard 4 meets iRobot if you ask me, but that also translates into a certain, undeniable cool factor. I've heard -- as in, I've been told by people whose opinions I trust -- that the comic books upon which this movie is being based (written by Robert Venditti) are exceptional, and are reason alone for the excitement that they hold for »

David Ayer has been hired to write the screenplay for the DreamWorks Studios film Deep Sea Cowboys, report the trades. The flick is being produced by fanboy-favorites Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (Star Trek, Transformers) through their K/O Productions. Ayer's script will be based on Joshua Davis' article in Wired last year about a salvage crew attempting to save a capsized Japanese cargo ship. The film, which will be presented in real-time, will explore how a tightknit crew races to beat the clock and potential drowning to save the ship's dangerous cargo and claim its reward. Ayer's writing credits include U-571, Training Day, The Fast and the Furious and S.W.A.T. He also directed 2006's Harsh Times with Christian Bale and more recently the Keanu Reeves Lapd film Street Kings. DreamWorks negotiated to take the project when the studio split from Paramount in September, but Paramount retains the option to co-finance and co-distribute Cowboys. »
