Early Thoughts on Piranha 3D

25 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Alexandre Aja.s Piranha 3-D marks a fierce return to form after the director.s lackluster Mirrors . Curiously, the Frenchman.s latest brings to mind a pair of creature features with Samuel L. Jackson: Snakes on a Plane and Deep Blue Sea . It succeeds as the over-the-top spectacle SoaP was hyped to be, and feels in many ways like the Deep Blue Sea sequel that never happened. Currently scheduled to open on April 16 next year, a rough cut of the horror-comedy screened last night in New Jersey (a fitting location, considering all the spray-tanned spring breakers we watch die by the boatload in this remake), sans 3D, with temporary effects, and music cues culled from The Dark Knight and 28 Days Later . Even in its two-dimensional nascent state, with glossy, unfinished …

What TV or movie death scenes have left you disappointed?

21 November 2009 10:30 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

I love a good death scene. Ronald Lacey's Arnold Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Samuel L. Jackson's Russell Franklin in Deep Blue Sea. Sean Bean's Boromir in Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. ("My brother...my captain...my king." Cue: me, sobbing.) So imagine my disappointment upon seeing 2012. (Warning: Spoilers Ahead.) I finally caught up with last weekend's box-office champ, and though I agreed with our critic Lisa Schwarzbaum, finding the film to be a fun spectacle, I couldn't get over one of the most nonsensical and unnecessary death scenes I've seen …

Will shark movie, The Reef, help or hinder Australia's tourist trade?

4 November 2009 3:17 AM, PST | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

It’s 34 years since Jaws first put sharks on cinema’s scare-o-meter and since then we’ve spilt our popcorn over other predators of the deep in the likes of Deep Blue Sea and Open Water. And it looks like we could once again be giving the sea a miss thanks to The Reef, a new Australian thriller scheduled for release in 2010. The low-budget movie, which is being touted as a true story and is supported by the country’s State Government, follows a group of youngsters who find themselves fighting for their lives when their sailboat capsizes along the Great Barrier Reef and a great white takes a dislike to them. It’s classic disaster movie fodder and yet there are concerns that it might damage tourism in the Queensland area, where it’s being filmed. …

Renny Harlin Takes Val Kilmer and Emmanuelle Chriqui to Georgia

28 October 2009 8:21 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We wrote a couple months ago about Renny Harlin's upcoming film about the 2008 conflict between Georgia and Russia. Now, as then, I'm interested in the film to see if Harlin can take what made a few of his films really entertaining (I'm thinking of Cliffhanger, Deep Blue Sea and The Long Kiss Goodnight) and apply it to something that isn't so flashy. Can he come up with a film that's actually good? It's been a while. Today he's got some of the cast lined up for the picture, which we now know will be called simply Georgia. Val Kilmer and Entourage's Emmanuelle Chriqui are the leads in the film, says THR. Kilmer is a journalist covering the conflict; Chriqui is a Georgian grad student who becomes 'entangled' with Kilmer and his cameraman. We'd previously known that the film is about "an American journalist and his cameraman who arrive …

Chriqui and Kilmer Join War Film

28 October 2009 6:36 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Here’s a recipe for … well, I’m not sure what dish this will make, but it’ll certainly be interesting: Emmanuelle Chriqui, a recurring actor on Entourage, and Val Kilmer (Tombstone) have joined forces with director Renny Harlin for the leading roles in Georgia, Harlin’s new war film.

According to THR, the film centers around “an American journalist (Kilmer) and his cameraman caught in the crossfire of  covering last year’s military conflict between Russia and Georgia … [as well as] a Georgia native (Chriqui) and doctoral student who becomes entangled with them.”

While this certainly doesn’t represent Harlin’s average action fare, I’m not entirely convinced that the man has ever made a good film in his life. When the closest you come to a good film is the lackluster Die Hard 2 or the redeemably cheesy Deep Blue Sea, you know your track record is somewhat worse for the wear. …

The Weather Channel To Show Movies

22 October 2009 10:52 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Probably the number one point of conversation in our daily lives is the weather. What’s next on the most discussed list? I’d make a strong case for TV/movies: They’re something we’re all fans of, some to far more of an extent than others (can’t you tell we here at Screen Rant are an example of that? ). But did you ever think that movies and the weather would collide (outside of a Roland Emmerich movie)? Well today, in a rather odd piece of news, that’s exactly what’s happened.

The guys over at /Film are reporting that The Weather Channel (yes, The Weather Channel) will start showing movies starting the day before Halloween, October 30th, and every Friday thereafter. So what sort of movies will the channel be showing? Well, weather-related movies, of course! What else? Starting off the series - which runs from …

What's next? Will movie channels start telling us weather news?

21 October 2009 7:45 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Starting Friday, October 30, The Weather Channel begins airing movies as part of a new block of programming called The Weather Channel Presents. The first film is The Perfect Storm, Wolfgang Petersen's dramatization of the loss of the fishing vessel Andrea Gail during the infamous 1991 Atlantic storm season.

Network meteorologist Jen Carfagno will introduce each film and then add commentary about the factual elements of the storm or weather related event at the heart of each movie. "From the Nor’easter in The Perfect Storm to the tornado that takes Dorothy to Oz, weather has a long history as a film star," remarked Geoffrey Darby, the executive vice president of programming for The Weather Channel. "Adding films to our Friday night lineup is a great way for us to further demonstrate how weather is an all-encompassing part of our lives that entertains and inspires us."

The Weather Channel is about to become The Weather Movie Channel

21 October 2009 6:29 AM, PDT | AOL - TVSquad | See recent AOL - TVSquad news »

Looks like TV Land isn't the only cable channel going away from their original programming model and getting into movies.

The Weather Channel has announced that it is adding movies to its schedule. The movies would have a scroll at the bottom that would keep viewers informed of the weather and other weather-related news and information, and each movie will be hosted by a meteorologist. The movies they've chosen so far all have a weather or a nature theme to them, including The Perfect Storm, March of the Penguins, Deep Blue Sea, and Misery. I'm guessing they picked Misery not for the crazy-woman-holds-a-writer-hostage angle but for the fact that the story takes places during a snowstorm.

The Weather Channel Decides to Show Movies Now That No One Watches The Weather Channel

20 October 2009 9:40 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

A channel entirely devoted to weather was a fantastic idea until we got phones that would tell us the weather and do so without waiting ten minutes to see what the weather was like in a major city in our area. So what’s a network entirely devoted to weather to do?  What if they turned their efforts to covering hard news not just of natural disasters (as much fun as it is to toss a reporter into a hurricane) but of their aftermath?  What if they did an investigative report on how Fema has attempted (if at all) to change in response to Hurricane Katrina?  What about a special on how a disaster like a tsunami leaves damage beyond the loss of life and property but affects drinking water and dispersed children and other factors we don’t traditionally think of?

Or they could just show movies about weather. …

Weather Channel Will Show Movies Which Have Nothing To Do With Weather

20 October 2009 6:03 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Slashfilm reported something very interesting... they received a press release from the Weather Channel saying they'll be showing movies. You must be thinking, hey that's pretty awesome! I forgot that channel existed. But hold your excitement. The first movie they'll be showcasing is The Perfect Storm. Okay, it's a movie about a huge ass storm. That's highly relevant. There's even going to be weather type commentary from meteorologist Jen Carfagno. But the next week, things get shaky... when they show March of the Penguins... but still, they could tie weather into that somehow right? Then it just gets stupid when they show Misery. Yes, the one with Kathy Bates. On the weather channel. I'll just let that sink in. The Next week, we basically hammer the nails in, with Deep Blue Sea. Look weather channel, I know personally, I never tune in. But I don't think showing Katy Bates busting …

The Weather Channel to show movies? Hail no!

20 October 2009 4:12 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Ok, that's it, I'm calling shenanigans. We've witnessed MTV stop really caring about music, VH1 abandon video hits, A&E decide to have nothing to do with Arts or (arguably) Entertainment, and Tlc race as far and as fast as it can from programming that could cause anyone to actually learn anything. But this was the final straw: The Weather Channel announced today that it will air feature-length movies on Friday nights starting Oct. 30. Yes, that's right: The. Weather. Channel. Granted, the first movie on the docket, The Perfect Storm, is relatively appropriate, but then we're gonna get March of the Penguins, …

Weather Channel Faces 100% Chance of Selling Out

20 October 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

It always starts this way: A specialized network builds a constituency with influential programming, then gradually alters its format to accommodate a wider audience. But I don't know if anyone saw that coming with The Weather Channel, which announced today it will augment some of the cable's most influential programming on cable with weekly, weather-themed Hollywood movies. First up on Oct. 30: The Perfect Storm, followed by March of the Penguins, Deep Blue Sea, and Misery -- yes, that Misery, which begins in a blizzard. Great. Surely Menage a Tornado, Born in a Tsunami and other stimulating Weather Channel original programming isn't be far behind. [AP] …

1999: A Year In Review (Part One)

7 October 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Many films come out every year with critics and fans alike, compiling lists of their bests and worsts. There are also many films that fall between the cracks, only to be discovered years later. Many critics believe that one of the best years in cinema was 1939, when Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz were released alongside many other classic gems.

Personally, I’ve always felt that 1999 was an epic year for movies, providing us with so many interesting films. In fact, 1999 was such a good year for movies that even some of the bad ones are still worth watching!

So, please sit back and put your memory caps on as Screen Rant takes on a retrospective of 1999 in the world of film.

In 1999, the world was a very different place. We were on the cusp of a new millennium and 9/11 was something that nobody - not even …

‘Deep Blue Sea’ Star Joins Cast of ‘Thor’

5 October 2009 10:57 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Does anyone else find it shocking that a Swedish actor would be cast in a movie about vikings and Norse mythology? No? Didn't think so. Coming off a fantastic role in Metropia, Stellan Skarsgard has just signed on to play an unknown role in Thor. According to MovieWeb via the Swedish news rag Ystads Allehanda, Marvel didn't even want Skarsgard to read the script before he signed on the dotted line, apparently because of how secretive they want the project kept. Thor is going to be a challenge because it moves beyond the science-based superhero model that Marvel has made popular with Iron Man (and to a lesser degree The Hulk) and heads straight into the world of mythology. The project is set for a 2011 release and already has most of the main personnel in place with actor/writer/director Kenneth Branagh at the helm, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Natalie Portman as Thor's private nurse Jane …

Halle Berry Cast in Great White Shark Thriller 'Dark Tide'

9 September 2009 6:10 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Is Shark Week over yet? I love shark movies, everything from Jaws to Deep Blue Sea. I've been waiting to see that Meg movie, but since that probably won't be happening for a long time, I'll settle for this. Variety reports that Halle Berry has joined the cast of a new action-thriller titled Dark Tide. She will play a diving instructor who returns to the deep after a near-fatal incident with a Great White shark. Unfortunately this guy probably won't be a genetically enhanced shark (like in Deep Blue Sea), but I have feeling it will be as life-like as they can make it, adding more thrill to the experience. Shooting will start later this year. The screenplay for Dark Tide was written by newcomer Amy Sorlie and also developed by literary manager Sukee Chew. Swat and The Sentinel director Clark Johnson will be directing with Twilight producers Marty Bowen

Guy Ritchie To Direct Lobo

3 September 2009 12:12 PM, PDT | Filmofilia | See recent Filmofilia news »

Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie has signed on to direct a live-action adaptation of DC Comics’ bad boy anti-hero Lobo, a character originated in 1983 in “Omega Men” by Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen.

Lobo is a alien interstellar bounty hunter. The seven-foot tall, blue-skinned, indestructible and heavily muscled anti-hero drives a pimped out motorcycle, and lands on Earth in search of four fugitives who are bent on wreaking havoc.

Don Payne will pen the script (The Simpsons, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, My Super Ex-Girlfriend) and Joel Silver (The Matrix, Speed Racer, RocknRolla, Ninja Assassin), Akiva Goldsman (Deep Blue Sea, Starsky & Hutch, I Am Legend), and Andrew Rona (The Brothers Grimm) are producing along with Warner Bros, who owns DC Comics and all of its characters.

Shooting kicks off early next year and is aiming for a PG-13 rating. [source: Variety]

Fox Rebooting Fantastic Four: Do You Care?

31 August 2009 9:10 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

There are many things in this life that do not make me want to bang my head against the trash can by my desk. That's right. Surprise. I have a desk. But for some reason, the news that Fox is planning on revamping a series whose last film came out as late as 2007 baffles me to the point of shoving my head into a trash compactor. Not that I have anything specifically against Fox, even though it seems like it, the reason they need to reboot anything is because they failed to create lasting franchises in the first place. And according to Variety, this bad boy is coming courtesy of Akiva Goldsman. Yes, friends! From the Producer that brought you Deep Blue Sea And Mindhunters And Poseidon And I Am Legend And Hancock comes a reboot of a franchise that Fox has no idea how to create or market in the first place.
