DVD Playhouse—December 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject, …

Drones, the new comedic (sci-fi?) film co-directed by Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Adam Busch is screening at Slamdance Film Festival 2010!

Synopsis reads only A man discovers a universal threat to his life, job and the planet. The awesome Angela Bettis and Jonathan M. Woodward star. It has a definite Office Space appeal to it, but with sci-fi hints in the plotline. Watch the trailer...

Defying Gravity Season 1 DVD Cover Art and Specs

11 December 2009 1:21 PM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

I wasn’t much of a fan of ABC’s canceled “Defying Gravity”, mostly because I don’t like too much drama with my space faring action. Plus, it just never struck me as overly sci-fi, astronauts and space notwithstanding. In any case, I do know there are a lot of fans of the show on the site, and perhaps this will interest them. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is releasing the entire first season on DVD January 19, 2010. DVD cover art and complete specs for the 4-disc set below. In the near future, an international team of four men and four women undertakes the most ambitious exploration in the history of mankind – a six-year, grand tour of the solar system. But space travel is a fool’s game. Passions rise, relationships blossom, and tensions mount as veteran astronaut Maddux Donner (Ron Livingston, Office Space, The Time Traveler’s Wife, “Sex And The City

Dave Foley Finds the Funny in AIDS, Abortion, and Glenn Beck

10 December 2009 8:59 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

There isn’t much to recommend The Strip, a new indie movie that opened in select theaters last weekend. The comedy about minimum wage employees at a strip mall is practically begging for comparisons with the cult hit Office Space but actually comes across like a less funny Employee of the Month. The Strip would be guaranteed a spot in the dustbin of late-night cable if it wasn’t for a surprisingly touching performance by Dave Foley. Foley plays the middle-aged manager of Electri-City, an electronics store in a desolate, possibly Californian strip mall. His character is a caricature at best, but there are flashes of genius in Foley’s performance. When an Electri-City employee violently shakes one of Foley’s collectible snow globes, Foley becomes flustered by the unexpected chaos. “Why don’t we wait for this to settle,” he says, apparently needing the flakes to settle down before he can think clearly. …

'Extract' Roundtable with Mike Judge - Live

10 December 2009 11:17 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

I'm currently sitting in a virtual roundtable session [read: chat room] with Mike Judge (the man behind Extract, Office Space and Idiocracy) as he talks about his latest film Extract and fields questions from his fellow chatroom patrons. The roundtable comes to you courtesy of the new Blu-ray and DVD release of Extract. The page will update as questions are asked. If you want to ask a question, leave it in the comments and with luck it'll show up here.

Q: Was there instant chemistry when the actors began working together or did it take some time for them to gel?

Mike Judge: For the most part it was instant. And most of them had already worked together or knew each other, so it all gelled nicely.

Q: Was it your idea to cast rocker Gene Simmons as bench lawyer Joe Adler?

Mike Judge: Yeah, I had originally described the character …

Ron Livingston has filed a lawsuit to get an unnamed internet bandit to stop changing his Wikipedia page to say he's in a gay relationship, TMZ reports.

Livingston, who married a woman earlier this year, played Peter in "Office Space" and has appeared on "Sex and the City." He says the bandit keeps changing his page to read that he's in a relationship with a man named Lee Dennison ... a claim Livingston says is completely false and "malicious."

Livingston Suing Over 'Malicious' Online Gay Claims

5 December 2009 6:26 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Office Space star Ron Livingston is taking legal action against an unknown internet prankster who keeps hacking into his Wikipedia page and claiming the actor is gay.

The 42 year old, who is married to Standoff co-star Rosemarie Dewitt, filed suit at Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday alleging a "malicious" hacker is continually breaking into his information page on the website.

The papers reveal the online joker - who is not named in the documents - has allegedly published claims the star is in a relationship with a man named Lee Dennison, and created a false profile on social networking site Facebook.com, which again suggests the actor is homosexual.

He is suing for libel, invasion of privacy and using his image without prior permission, according to TMZ.com.

At time of press, Livingston's Wikipedia page has been changed to say he is married to Dewitt. …

[TV] Better Off Ted: The Complete First Season

2 December 2009 4:00 AM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

When they adapted Dilbert from a simple comic strip into a television show they had a good idea; they just executed it poorly. The ridiculous nature of bureaucracy and its system of ethics with a Gumbi-like flexibility make a perfect target for lampooning. Dilbert does it perfectly on the page, but when translated to a moving cartoon the humor suddenly falls flat. But it can be done. Other ventures have taken up the mantle of pointing out the ludicrous nature of big business (The Office, Office Space, etc.) and each has been more successful than Dilbert. I would dare to say that when it comes to the funniest take on “business as usual”, Better Off Ted beats the rest. Easily. Heck, it only seems fitting that a sitcom which draws its name from a hilarious John Cusack film should have equally perfect comedic timing.

Ted (Jay Harrington) works in the …

Galaxy Quest Blu-ray Review

24 November 2009 9:30 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

When you talk about the year of cinema that was 1999, there are the films that come immediately. Fight Club, The Sixth Sense, The Matrix, Eyes Wide Shut. I love The Insider, have a soft spot for eXistenZ and Three Kings and then it starts getting complicated, as films like American Beauty, Girls Don’t Cry, and The Green Mile haven’t exactly weathered as well, while films like Office Space have only grown in estimation.  At the time, most wouldn’t have listed Galaxy Quest as one of the great films of 1999, and yet ten years later, someone like David Mamet can call it a perfect movie. And it is. By Grabthar’s Hammer, my review of Galaxy Quest after the jump.

The premise is simple: what if aliens watched Star Trek and thought it was real? Tim Allen plays Jason Nesmith who plays Peter Quincy Taggart, the Kirk character …

First Trailer For Baumbach's Greenberg

23 November 2009 4:37 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Noah Baumbach is a brilliant director both visually and in the performances he.s able to get out of his actors, which gives me a lot of hope for Greenberg despite the fact that I.m actively Not a fan of Ben Stiller. Greenberg seems to set its sights on the Office Space crowd who still share Peter Gibbons. dream of doing nothing, but in a way more indie sort of way. Ben Stiller plays the titular lead and is somewhat of a hopeless romantic. A romance starts to blossom between him and his brother.s assistant, played by Greta Gerwig, but it seems like he.s too awkward for his own good and it may get in the way of the relationship. Baumbach has certainly proven himself as a force to be reckoned with in the indie circuit and it looks like he.s put together a fun and …

Geek Deal: Three Blu-Ray Movie Packs for $25

Amazon has some awesome deals on some select three Blu-Ray movie packs. Each of the listed packs below is only $24.99 each, and also comes with $5 credit towards select Amazon on-demand TV-Shows. That's basically $8.33 for each Blu-ray disc. Action Collection: Jumper, Transporter, Transports 2 Action Hero Collection: The Day After Tomorrow, I, Robot, The Terminator Hard Action Collection: Hitman, Street Kings, Man on Fire War Hero Collection: Behind Enemy Lines, Patton, Rescue Dawn Funny Guy Collection: Napoleon Dynamite, Office Space, Young Frankenstein Jock Collection: Dodgeball, Hoosiers, Rocky I always find it amusing how these three packs are grouped. They usually contain one or two good movies and a film you'd never ever buy. But at the price, it's probably still worth it for the two movies you do like. The Funny Guy Collection is probably the one exception, unless you're one of those people that hated Napoleon. …

Boos! & Whoop-doos!: An Evil Bunny Trash Town Called Liquor!

True cult status? Whoop-doo!

Both Internet pundits and blog critics alike are quick to bitch about the cliched nature of our current cinematic landscape. While they scream in bold words of disgust, they can't help but fall into a similar trap themselves. They're just as guilty of sipping from this dried well as the rest of our so-called "film community". How often do you read a review that screams, "Instant classic!" Or, "Modern day masterpiece!" How about, "A Triumph!" Then there's, "A true crowd pleaser!" "A thrill ride!" "The funniest comedy of the summer!" And, "Does for (insert blank) what Jaws did for swimming!" The list goes on and on. When it comes right down to it, there's not much new you can say in terms of film theory and structure. When all of our movies are repeats, reboots, and sequels, you have to guess that most critical movements in …
