Foolish Golden Globe Predictions

13 December 2009 11:08 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Best Picture Drama

The Hurt Locker

Inglourious BasterdsThe Last Station

PreciousUp in the Air

The Globes sometimes throw in really interesting critical darlings that don't have much of a shot at Oscar (like Mulholland Drive or Eastern Promises) and sometimes they latch on to brand new movies that nobody cares about the next day (The Great Debaters) so, really, who the hell knows?!? Which is why I'm just tossing up my hands and predicting The Last Station. But honestly it feels like there's about 12 pictures that might be nominated. You could even see The Road surprising (they have a documented thing for Viggo) The reason I'm ignoring Avatar is that it just barely started screening. I don't know when the Hfpa starting voting but the Bfca ballots, for example, were due on Saturday, roughly 36 hours after the first Avatar screenings... at least here in NYC. And based on when the …

'Return of the Jedi,' Directed by David Lynch?

12 December 2009 8:02 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Even the thought of directing Wookies gave him a migraine headache. Still, out of respect, David Lynch met with George Lucas in the early 1980s to talk about directing the second sequel to his landmark blockbuster, eventually titled Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Lynch recalls Lucas telling him about Wookies and "a lot of other animals," having lunch at a restaurant where only salad was served -- "not that I have anything against salad" -- and developing a migraine headache so severe that he snuck off to call his agent and beg not to make the movie. Lynch's conversation at the Hudson Union Society was captured by Fora.tv and is embedded after the jump.

In hindsight, knowing that Lynch would go on to make Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Dr., it sounds like an insane idea, as in "What Was George Smoking? …

Monster Movies

11 December 2009 4:07 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Glenn here from Stale Popcorn here to discuss one of my favourite films from 2003, Patty Jenkins' Monster. Earlier this year when Courtney Hunt's Frozen River was released here in Australia I wrote in my review that It's a shame that Courtney Hunt's Frozen River is so good. It's unfortunate because now I will most likely be incredibly disappointed when this debut director falls between the cracks of the lead performance she helped create. I then went on to cite Boys Don't Cry's Kimberley Pierce (9 years between films) and Monster as examples.

Patty Jenkins has yet to make a second film after her Monster debut and there has never even been any word on her wanting to make another film. That is such a shame since she brought such fascinating sense of place to the Aileen Wuornos film and her twists on the idea of "American Gothic

Fashion Dilemma

What will David Lynch's Dior advert look like?

Picture the scene: A woman sits in a darkened room, her pale face illuminated by the light of a streetlamp shining through the slats of a venetian blind. She is strikingly beautiful. She is crying, but she's still beautiful - not red-faced and swollen-eyed like normal people. This is because she is Lady Dior.

Lady Dior has a small blue Perspex box in front of her. She reaches out her slender and well-manicured fingers to touch the box. Kazzzam!!!

Lady Dior awakes on a beach in Miami. The camera pans out, accompanied only by the sounds of the waves crashing against the shore. We see in the distance that Lady Dior is …

David Lynch's Funny Tale of Meeting George Lucas and Rejecting Return of the Jedi

10 December 2009 3:15 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Fora.tv recently posted an interview with David Lynch at the Hudson Union Society. The 63-year-old creator of Blue Velvet, Mulholland Drive, and Twin Peaks took time to talk a little about his experience meeting George Lucas, who offered him the chance to direct Return of the Jedi.

Lynch amused the audience by saying he had "next-door to zero interest" in the project, but he thought he should at least meet with Lucas. He then described the elaborate process of simply getting to Lucas.

It was incredible. I had to go to this building in La first and get a special credit card, and I had to get special keys; a letter came, and a map.

Finally, after taking a flight and driving a rental car to some building, he met with Lucas in an office.

Now, right about in this time, I started getting a little bit of a headache. …

The Naughts: The Romantic Pair of the '00s

9 December 2009 2:59 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

I knew what she looked like by heart this time.

That scrap of newspaper she was on should

have been worn ragged by now, the number of

times I'd pulled it out and looked at it when I

    was alone in the place.

-- Cornell Woolrich, "The Black Angel"

It's the fear as much as the tenderness. It's the desperation in the way they clutch hands in a darkened theater, and the sensuousness in the way they caress each other in bed. It's the contradiction of having found yourself by stepping into a mystery, and the cruelty of discovering that the heaven of love is a gossamer skein stretched over a black hole. "And the mysteries of love come clear," is the way David Lynch put the paradox in the song he wrote for "Blue Velvet." Those mysteries have never been as heartrending in Lynch's work as they are in …

'Gossip Girl' recap: Chuck hangs with his father...and meets his mother (maybe)!!

8 December 2009 4:00 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

This season of Gossip Girl is turning into a regular family reunion. We’ve met Vanessa’s annoying mother. We learned that Serena’s father had popped back up on the radar. And now we have seen Mother Bass or some lady who has the same taste in flowers. I knew she was still alive! In fact, I called this waaaay back when Chuck and Dan ended up in jail in season 2 and Chuck discussed his mother’s death. I knew it! Of course, I could totally be wrong and this mystery lady, played by Mulholland Drive’s Laura Harring, …

The former Smiths guitarist is to compose the music for a movie starring Antonio Banderas and Snoop Dogg. Don't hold your breath for a Morrissey cameo though ...

Johnny Marr will compose the score to a forthcoming film starring Antonio Banderas and Snoop Dogg. The former Smiths guitarist has been asked to write original music for The Big Bang, a detective film by director Tony Krantz.

"This will be Johnny's first film score and he was just ranked the number one greatest guitarist of all time by Virgin Media," producer Reece Pearson told MovieScore magazine. But while Marr is celebrated for his riffs, he is a relatively unknown when it comes to soundtracks. However, he has already announced a partnership with Ian Brown to score three television dramas, but it is unclear when these programmes will air.

George Books In Baby

2 December 2009 8:26 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Australian actress Melissa George has booked in time to have a baby next year.

The Mulholland Drive star married Chilean director Claudio Dabed in 2000, and they have waited nine years to start a family.

But George is adamant she wants to get pregnant in 2010 and she's pinpointed a gap in her schedule when she can realistically take time off for a baby.

She says, "I'm going to have a baby. I have booked three different movies starting in February going all the way through to July, which I am really happy about. Then I think I will just have a baby after that."

George, 33, is a stepmother to Dabed's 15-year-old daughter Martina, from a previous relationship. …

Justin Theroux boards 'Space Invader'

Justin Theroux ("Mulholland Dr.") is keeping himself busy these days, and that's a good thing. The actor/writer/producer/director has just boarded Fox's upcoming romantic space comedy "Space Invader."

The Hollywood Reporter says the story follows a man who wants to space after he suspects his astronaut girlfriend is cheating on him with a spacewalker. Will Arnett is in talks to star in the project.

Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger wrote the original draft, and Theroux is on board to complete a new one. Theroux, of course, co-wrote "Tropic Thunder" and the upcoming sequel "Iron Man 2." …

David Lynch’s Next Film is a Documentary on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Updates on Snootworld.

18 November 2009 11:40 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Everyone I know is compiling a list of the best films of the aughts, and 2001's Mulholland Drive seems to be a lock on most (and if it's not, 2006's Inland Empire is the more pretentious substitute). But as the decade closes out, I do wish we had seen more "Lynchian" films from David Lynch, who seems occupied with experimental video, his son's ambitious documentary projects, the advent of Twitter, and exposing as many people/fans to Transcendental Meditation as possible. So, if it's a tad disappointing that the chain smoking auteur's next film won't hinge on creepy dream logic, it doesn't qualify as a surprise that it will instead be a doc on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The founder and guru of Tm died early last year, and true to form, Lynch adds that his doc on the man will "hold a lot of abstractions." Lynch tells Vulture that he's …

Justin Theroux to Pen Space Invader Romantic Comedy

18 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Justin Theroux is something of a Renaissance man in Hollywood. As an actor, Theroux has appeared on numerous TV shows and in over a dozen movies, including acclaimed filmmaker David Lynch's Mulholland Dr. In addition, Theroux also works behind the scenes and behind the camera. He produced and wrote the script for Tropic Thunder and he wrote and directed Dedication.

Theroux recently tried his hand at the superhero genre, penning the script for the sequel to director Jon Favreau's adaptation of the classic Marvel Comics character Iron Man. Now, THR is reporting that Theroux has been hired by Fox to write a draft of Space Invader, a romantic comedy set in space that was originally written by Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger. Will Arnett (Arrested Development) will star in Space Invader as a man who follows his wife into space because he suspects her of cheating on him …

David Lynch's Next Film Is A Documentary On Transcendental Meditation

18 November 2009 7:21 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

A few years ago I went to see David Lynch give a speech at a nearby college. I knew he was there to talk about transcendental meditation, the practice that has pretty much consumed his work in the last decade and has kept us from getting another masterpiece after Mulholland Drive (sorry, Inland Empire). We were all hoping that he'd manage to slip in some discussion of the Log Lady or snakeskin jackets during the speech, but Lynch was pretty determined to stick to the meditation status quo. Disappointed doesn't really begin to describe it. I feel exactly the same way reading Vulture's interview with Lynch, in which he says his next film will be a documentary about Maharishi Mahesh yogi, which he says straight up "won't be a so-called David Lynch film." Then again, he promises "It.ll hold a lot of abstractions," which sounds about as David Lynch

Decade in Review: 2001 Top Ten

17 November 2009 8:41 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

What follows is my original top ten list of 2001. We'll discuss each year of the decade over the next month or two (we already did 2000). I do this because I am curious about which films "stick" and which fade and why and maybe you are too? Best year of the decade I think. The top five films would all be valid #1 film choices in some years. New comments are in red.

Note: This list references films released in NYC in 2001, not year of production or year in which they first the hit festival circuit or whatnot.

Runners Up (in descending order): Sexy Beast, Ali, Series 7: The Contenders, The Others, Last Resort and Waking Life. I don't remember loving Ali that much... and more than The Others? I don't remember that at all. I mean Nicole Kidman was the shit Twice Over in 2001.

In my round up of the …

Weitzman Gets Stamp Honour In Spain

11 November 2009 12:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Shoemaker to the stars Stuart Weitzman has landed a bizarre honour in Spain - his first Oscars Million Dollar Shoe features on a new postage stamp.

The sparkling design, which was worn by Mulholland Drive star Laura Harring at the 2002 Academy Awards, featured 464 Kwiat cut diamonds, set in platinum on a platinum mesh frame.

The stamp honour comes after Weitzman became the first non-Spaniard to receive the Favourite Adopted Son of Elda honour by dignitaries of the area, where the shoemaker's manufacturing headquarters is based.

The title has only been bestowed on four other people since the end of the Spanish Civil War, over 70 years ago.

The new Weitzman stamp features an image of Harring's shoe and the company's logo.

The proud shoemaker says, "I feel proud for our local shoe industry, that, perhaps its most recognised shoe has been memorialised on the commemorative stamp?" …

Directors of the Decade: David Lynch

29 October 2009 11:50 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Robert here, continuing my series of the directors that shaped the past 10 years (Enjoy the first two installments on Scorsese and Bahrani) . The most important directors of the past 10 years aren’t always the most prolific, though this series will require a director to have released at least 2 films. Not to mention some of those featured here may be love ‘em or hate ‘em choices. Something tells me, this weeks entry is one such man: David Lynch.

Number of Films: Two.

Modern Masterpieces: I’m going to go ahead and suggest that both Mulholland Dr. and Inland Empire qualify.

Total Disasters: Though you may feel that both Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire fall here.

Better than you remember: And if you do think that, may I suggest you place them here.

Awards: Nominated for a Best Director Oscar for Mulholland Drive. Won Best Director in Cannes for that same film. …

50 Influential Scream Queens: Part 2

27 October 2009 10:57 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Before I launch into the conclusion of my 50 Influential Scream Queens (read part 1 here), please let me remind you that this list is based upon my personal taste, and my personal taste alone. I didn't poll 100 Fango readers, the Fango staff or any other form of 'industry professionals'. It's all opinion, so if you feel I've wronged a certain actress by excluding them from the list, don't leap to brand the entire Fango crew 'vile'.  I probably just don't personally find their work to be that influential. Either that or I'm just ignorant to their accomplishments!

25. Mia Farrow: Mia's genre work may be a bit limited, but that doesn't change the fact that Rosemary's Baby will forever be regarded as one of the creepiest films in history. Farrow's portrayal of Rosemary Woodhouse is harrowing to say the least, and will always remain (in my mind) one of the best performances the genre has seen. …
