Three Stars

So call me shallow. If I have to watch a protagonist for a long time on screen, it has to be somebody worth watching. J. Binoche is definetley worth watching and she can act too (a rare combination), and yes, I am biased. The first hour of this film was very promising. The second half, though went in various directions, and I was not sure exactly what Techine wanted his audience to believe in. Unless you payed really close attention the first time, this is one of those films that needs to be viewed twice to fully understand the characters and plot. I wouldn't say it's that good, but it's not bad either. My honest opinion: 2 1/2 stars and another 1/2 star for not being a Hollywood movie.
