Hideo Nakata is set to direct the supernatural thriller "Voice From the Stone." Nakata directed the original Japanese version of "The Ring" ("Ringu") and the English sequel "The Ring Two" starring Naomi Watts.
Mark Wheaton ("The Messengers," "Friday the 13th") has written the screenplay based on an Italian novel of the same name. The story revolves around a female child psychologist who takes on the case of a young boy who made a promise to his dying mother. The promise? He will remain silent until her spirit returns. Tan dan dan...
Nakata is the perfect choice to helm this project. "Voice From the Stone" has a strong female character and a perturbed young boy at its core, much like "The Ring" films with Watts' Rachel protecting her young son Aidan (David Dorfman). »

For those cinema amateurs out there that think America has been on the cutting age of horror filmmaking for the past seven years, think again. 2002's The Ring marked shift in the film industry. A shift from thought and creation, to simply mining other mediums for everything they're worth (which so far has not been much). Now, nine years later, the man who started it all by delivering Ringu to Japanese audiences in 1998, Hideo Nakata, will be direct Voice From the Stone for Zanuck Independent. According to Variety, the supernatural thriller is about a young boy sworn to silence until the spirit of his dead mother returns. Soon, the boy's psychologist becomes the body that his mother possesses in order to come back from the dead. Presumably, her first attempt at returning is in the form of a stone, that the boy hears a voice from, otherwise the title would »

Japanese director Hideo Nakata is most famous for directing the original versions of the “Ring” movies, or “Ringu” as its known overseas. He loved directing ghost ladies who climb out of TV’s so much, he returned to the franchise in 2005 to direct the sequel to the American version starring Naomi Watts. (And, I suppose, the nice paycheck didn’t hurt, either.) With “Ring” still apparently popular (though I suppose that’s open to debate), Nakata is currently attached to direct the third entry, which is scheduled for 2011. Before that, though, Nakata is helming “Voice from the Stone” for Zanuck Independent. Based on an Italian novel of the same name, “Voice From the Stone” was adapted by Mark Wheaton, and tells the story of a female child psychologist who takes on the case of a young boy. Nothing creepy there, right? Not so fast, my friends. You see, the hook »

Variety reports that Hideo Nakata, who helmed the Japanese Ringu chillers among others as well as the American The Ring Two, will direct Voice From The Stone for Zanuck Independent. The project is based on the Italian cult novel La Voce Della Pietra by Silvio Raffo.
The story concerns a female psychologist treating a young boy who has vowed to remain silent until his deceased mother’s spirit returns—and discovers that the mother’s ghost intends to use her body as the vessel to live again and be reunited with her child. Former Fango contributor Mark Wheaton, whose credits include The Messengers and the Friday The 13th remake, wrote the script. Shooting will take place next spring/summer for producers Dean Zanuck, Stefano Gallini-Durante, Oliver Simon and Daniel Baur. »

Just in time for Halloween, Palisades Tartan has grouped together three of the most successful Asian horror films of recent years in one region 2 DVD collection. Although terms such as ‘essential’ are woefully overused when it comes to such compilations, in this case it certainly rings true, as the three titles are arguably among the most important and influential examples of the modern Asian genre – not least since two of them have been the subject of markedly less successful Hollywood remakes. The films in question, “Audition”, “Dark Water” and “The Eye” also provide a showcase for three highly acclaimed directors in the ever prolific Takashi Miike (still best known in the West for his infamous “Ichi the Killer”), The Pang Brothers (who recently headed for the Us themselves with “The Messengers” and a remake of their own “Bangkok Dangerous”) and Hideo Nakata, whose “Ringu” launched the new wave of Eastern horror. »

Ju-On (The Grudge to you westerners) director Takashi Shimizu will begin work on his next project, an English-language horror thriller about a song so horrific, so depressing and macabre, that it drives whomever listens to it to suicide. Think Ringu meets Lady Gaga.
Penned by Chris Philpott (Fairytales and Pornography), the unnamed feature will be produced by Taka Ichise (Ringu) along with Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer and Brad Fischer. The idea of a killer song came directly from Shimizu and Ichise
Shimizu is currently wrapping up The Shock Labyrinth, Japan’s first live-action 3D flick. The film is based on a popular haunted house attraction at Fuji-q High Land, an amusement park near Mt. Fuji and is apparently the world’s longest horror house walk-through. A group of teenagers (it’s never 30-somethings) take a sick friend to an old hospital (it’s never new modernized hospitals) and discover »

Without so much as a whisper of PR, horror maestro Hideo Nakata’s period scare movie Kaidan has just slipped quietly out on R1 DVD via Liongate entertainment. The artwork for the DVD is surpringly sympathetic to the original, though we couldn’t help but notice someone at LG could'nt resist having a go at least once with that special Photoshop - “add more blood!!” - button of theirs. Gore hounds take note - even though they've subtly named dropped "Ringu" on the cover - Kaidan marks a departure from Nakata’s previous films, going more for classical themed chills, rather than an all out scare fest. Synopsis: Years ago, a debt collector was slain by a samurai. Before falling to his death, the debt collector placed a curse on the samurai who went on to kill his wife and himself. »

It's time for another installment of Fangoria Musick's Lists Of Doom - the column where we track down some of your favorite (or soon-to-be favorite) bands to get their thoughts on on the world of horror.
For number 15, we caught up with Mika Andre, bassist of the French band, Eryn Non Dae, whose Stateside debut Hydra Lernaia will arrive in-stores on June 23rd via Metal Blade Records. Mika's List of Doom is a bit different than what we usually see, with a strong lean toward Asian Horror.
Mika, the stage is yours...
I’m really into Asian horror movies because of their very calm and restrained atmosphere. Even if it’s a bit overrated now, there’s something very unique Ring had brought at the beginning; a kind of deep esthetic beauty in the horror.

If you eat a lot of fiber, you're going to be burning through this story as in a country where ghosts are traditionally believed to hide in the loo, a Japanese company is advertising a new literary experience - a horror story printed on toilet paper! For real! Now you can literally whip your butt with the story when it sucks. Each roll carries several copies of a new nine-chapter novella written by Koji Suzuki, the Japanese author of the horror story Ring (Ringu), which has been made into movies in both Japan and Hollywood. Drop, set in a public restroom, takes up about three feet (90 centimeters) of a roll and can be read in just a few minutes, according to the manufacturer, Hayashi Paper. »

The latest horror story from the author behind "Ringu," "Dream Cruise" and "Dark Water" won't be found in Japanese book stores next month. Instead it will be told on a roll of toilet paper. Koji Suzuki's nine-chapter novella "Drop" - a thriller set in a public restroom - takes up about three feet of Hayashi Paper-printed toilet paper. A roll is going for 210 yen, just a bit over two bucks. We're sure, somewhere, there's a Hollywood studio exec looking into the American screen rights now. »

Our reader Ash Arceneaux enlightened us to this awesome new scary toilet paper! (I mean 'awesome' in the sense of 'why?'.) Japenese company Hayashi Paper thought it would be a really great idea to print horror stories on toilet paper, so you can read them while crapping and then wipe your ass with the story! Each roll has several different stories of a nine-chapter novella written by Koji Suzuki, the Japanese author of the horror story Ringu, which led to the Japanese and American film versions (Ringu and The Ring)...
Another story is Drop, set in a public restroom, which is shorter (only 3 feet of a roll) and can be read in mere minutes if you only have to crap quickly! Hayashi Paper advertises the toilet paper as "a horror experience in the toilet" (I believe that's a direct translation) and it only costs 2.20 cents a roll!

There’s been a pair of stories in Screen Daily that tell us of two different films to have just cast Imogen Poots in lead roles. There’s Chatroom, an internet inspired thriller from Hideo Nakata, director of the Ring films, and there’s also Cordelia, a spin-off from Shakespeare’s King Lear that revolves around the life of Lear’s daughter after her exile to France. Chatroom’s origins are also theatrical, in fact, having been adapted by Enda Walsh from his stage play of the same name. Walsh also scripted Hunger, Steve McQueen’s much loved film about the hunger striker Bobby Sands. One scene in that film is realized as an unbroken shot of around seventeen minutes, providing essentially an extended dialogue from a single camera position. You might be forgiven for wondering if Walsh can break his theatrical style, or if he’d want to. Cordelia has its own Hunger link, »

As much as we'd like to, we can't play every new international genre hit at Fantastic Fest, and one of the ones missing from last year's lineup was L, Change The World, the latest film in the Death Note series. Although we were unable to screen it last year, we're pleased to report that the new film will be playing theaters nationwide via our friends at Viz Pictures (proud sponsors of Fantastic Fest 2008) and Fathom Events. Screening in theaters on April 29 and 30 only, Viz is also offering the film in two different versions, subtitled on the 29th and dubbed on the 30th, which is pretty damn cool of them. They're also doing giveaways and showing behind-the-scenes footage at each screening, which is even cooler.
Picking up after the events of Death Note II, the new film gives us the details of the last 23 days in the life of mastermind detective »
