Vera Farmiga: The Hollywood Interview 2009

17 December 2009 3:42 PM, PST | The Hollywood Interview | See recent The Hollywood Interview news »

(Vera Farmiga, right, and George Clooney in Up In The Air.)

by Terry Keefe

(Currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)

The first time we interviewed actress Vera Farmiga was in early 2001, at Swingers Diner on Beverly, over French fries. It was around 8 in the evening, as she had to spend the day auditioning for a network pilot. She was promoting a supporting role in a relatively forgettable Robert De Niro-Ed Burns cop thriller called Fifteen Minutes, where she played a Eastern European hairdresser who witnesses a murder. Parking was scarce in the neighborhood, to the point that we first met that night while angling for the same spot. Today, things have changed somewhat. We’re meeting at a ridiculously large and posh board room at the Beverly Hilton, which reminds of the one in Network where uber-exec Ned Beatty chews out Peter Finch’s Howard Beale. Valets take care of the cars. …

Episode Recap: Stargate Universe - 1.01: Air: Part 1

19 October 2009 7:31 PM, PDT | TVStar | See recent TVStar news »

The opening credits of the series premiere of Stargate Universe show the vast expanse of space as a ship jumps out of Ftl and begins to glide closer to our screens. An orchestra of sounds play in the background with an almost menacing and forboding undertone. It doesn't take long before it's crystal clear that the show you are about to watch bears little resemblance to its predecessors. We're taken inside the ship where we see corridor after corridor coming to life, in much the same manner as that of the series premiere of Stargate Atlantis. As the camera pans from deck to deck, and lights spring to life, one thing becomes painfully clear: the ship is old, very old. And suddenly I have to remind myself that I'm not watching Battlestar Galactica. The music, even the look of the ship, instantly take me back there. I was prepared for this, …

Film School 101

19 October 2009 5:05 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

We’ve all gone to the movies and said “I can make a better film then that.”  Personally, I’ve said that more than most, being a part-time film critic and part-time filmmaker.  But how easy is it really to make the Next Great American Film?  Truth is, not all that simple.  To say that the stars and the planets have to align in order to make a great film is not that far from the truth.  There are many, many things that can derail a film. You could hire the wrong actors, the wrong cinematographer, the equipment could fail – heck, the Kraft service table could have non-refrigerated mayo and give everyone food poisoning.  However, I am of the belief that we make our own luck and that having the proper knowledge will increase our chances at success.  Therefore, over the next few weeks I will be dissecting many movies …

Courteney Cox-Arquette: Breaking All The (Kindergarten) Rules!

4 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | People - CelebrityBabies | See recent People - CelebrityBabies news »

During a recent visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, actress Courteney Cox-Arquette dished on the “big summer” she just enjoyed with husband David Arquette and their daughter Coco Riley. Birthdays aplenty (Coco turned 5, while Courteney turned 45) and an anniversary (the couple’s tenth) were celebrated, but now the family-of-three has moved on to bigger and better things: Kindergarten! “There are a lot of rules,” Courteney notes. “I mean, so many rules you can’t believe it.”

“You can’t bring certain snacks because other kids are allergic. You can’t wear certain clothes because, I’m not sure, …

Thirst Review

28 August 2009 1:59 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Vampire movies, thanks to a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad film that shall remain nameless, look like they’re here to stay for a while. Yeah, true, they might’ve always been with us but the craze is on another upturn which means up-and-coming filmmakers who have a vampire in their script will likely see it produced. Trouble is, eight out of every ten vampire pictures end up as crap. Seldom do these flicks present a decent idea or tell an engaging story to admire. Dracula is obviously an exception, as is Kathryn Bigelow’s terrific Near Dark. More recently, Let the Right One In did a solid job of being everything that film we will not mention wasn’t. Park Chan-wook’s Thirst also breaks the mold and becomes an interesting and fresh take on vampires while still remembering everything it takes to also be a good film.

Studio may sue Avatar over 'visual similarities' to Delgo

26 August 2009 7:24 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Oh Dear. James Cameron's sci-fi flick Avatar has been marketed on its thrilling 3D CGI visuals and hailed as the future of filmmaking, but it looks like another movie did it all before.

In 2008, the animated fantasy Delgo bombed at the box office with the worst opening weekend on record. The $40million movie opened with just $512,000. It was pulled from cinemas after only a week on release, making a total of just $695,000 in the USA. Flop-a-doodle-do.

But Cameron's much-anticipated Avatar bears a remarkable resemblance to the movie, so much so that Delgo's makers Fathom Studios are considering a lawsuit.

"From what we have seen, we are amazed by the visual similarities between the two films," Atlanta-based Fathom Studios said in a statement. "We are considering what legal options may be available to us."

Cameron has claimed his film has been in the planning stages since the late 90s, although …
