One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!
We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years. »

It seems that behind-the-scenes featurette's are coming thick and fast at the moment. He's another for Drew Barrymore's directorial debut in the form of 'Whip It'. Check out the featurette after the jump or head on over to Apple for the high def version.
Synopsis: The directorial debut of Drew Barrymore, stars Ellen Page (Juno) as Bliss, a rebellious Texas teen who throws in her small town beauty pageant crown for the rowdy world of roller derby. A couple of Gala films, most notable the world premier of Dorian Gray has been added, along with the UK crime comedy flick Perrier's Bounty which stars Cillian Murphy which I'm honestly surprised to see as part of the lineup. I've been keeping my eye on it for a while, and honestly it didn't sound that great, but then again, I haven't seen footage.
There's also the world premier of Drew Barrymore's hot women rollerderby flick Whip It! and Herzog's remake of Bad Lieutenant.
New films after the break!

While some performers are Emmy veterans – like "Damages" star Glenn Close, who made it an even dozen nods today – others, such as her Oscar-winning costar William Hurt, are new to the dance. Hurt – who won the lead actor Oscar in 1985 for "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and picked up a supporting actor in a drama series Emmy nod today – is not the only Oscar champ in contention for an acting Emmy for the first time this year. While 1984 best actress Oscar winner Shirley MacLaine("Terms of Endearment") won one of her five Emmy bids for variety specials in the 1970s and 1980s, her nod today as lead actress in a movie or mini-series for "Coco Chanel" is her first recognition by the TV academy for her acting. And 1988 supporting actor Oscar champ Kevin Kline("A Fish Called Wanda") earned his first Emmy nod in the category of lead actor in »

Fox Searchlight Pictures is set to release Drew Barrymore's Whip It! for a wide release on on October 9, 2009. The film marks the directorial debut for Barrymore and stars Ellen Page (Juno) as Bliss, a rebellious Texas teen who throws in her small town beauty pageant crown for the rowdy world of roller derby. Marcia Gay Harden (Mystic River, Pollock) plays Bliss' disapproving mother, while Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) and Juliette Lewis (Old School) play roller-derby stars. Whip It! also stars Eve, Jimmy Fallon, and Daniel Stern. The film is based on the Shauna Cross novel "Derby Girl" and Cross also adapted the screenplay. I am actually anxious to see how this one turns out. The fact Searchlight picked it up and will distribute it wide is good news for the film, but the October release is a bit of a no man's land territory so I guess we »

The Olivier Awards -- London's equivalent to the Tony Awards -- were dominated by home-grown winners when the 33rd edition of the kudos unwrapped Sunday night in an event hosted by James Nesbitt at Grosvenor House.
Only one of the top awards went to an American production, as the 2006 Tony best musical champ "Jersey Boys" took the tuner prize. The show, which recounts the story of the Four Seasons using their songs, prevailed against only one other contender -- "Zorro," a telling of the old tale set to the music of the Gipsy Kings.
The 2008 Tony-winning best play "August: Osage County" was bested by Gregory Burke's drama "Black Watch," while its leading lady -- the Tony-winning Deanna Dunagan -- lost to Margaret Tyzack for a revival of "The Chalk Garden." That production of the 1955 Enid Bagnold psychological drama, which also won lighting design, originated at the Donmar Warehouse. That »

Make this blog item your home page for the rest of Oscar day. Tom O'Neil and Paul Sheehan are blogging live continuously all day. Keep hitting "refresh" for constant updates about what's happening at the Kodak Theatre.
9:06 p.m. — As with all of the past seven Oscars held at the Kodak Theater, the Governors Ball takes place in the adjoining Grand Ballroom which is 25,090 square feet. The menu for the Governors Ball was created by Wolfgang Puck for the fifteenth consecutive year. He promises the return of old favorites like tuna tartare in sesame miso cones and Maine lobster as well as, of course, caviar. And pastry chef Sherry Yard will once more be creating her gold-dusted chocolate Oscars as consolation prizes for those who didn’t get one of the real ones. Music will be spun by Kcrw radio host Jason Bentley who will alternate with The Impulse »

When Tariq Khan makes a bold Oscar prediction, take heed. He's one of the savviest Oscarologists I know and this year he's going where no other guru dares: out onto a thin, shaky limb for Amy Adams ("Doubt") for supporting actress. Interesting call! That category, after all, is where most Oscar upsets happen.
Tariq has one of the best Oscar prediction rates every year. Check out the forecasts he made last year for Fox News — he scored 100%. Earlier this derby season he was one of the first pundits warning us that Kate Winslet might be nommed for "The Reader" instead of "Revolutionary Road."
Below, Tariq makes his argument for Amy Adams, building his Oscar case carefully by citing past award trends and issues at play this year. I dare to disagree with him, though. I think the two points he's not giving enough due are the Babe Factor and the fact that, »

What did Mark Friedberg (pictured left) ever do to the Art Directors branch within the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? For years he's been one of the most distinctive, inspired and original talents working yet he never seems to come anywhere near an Oscar nomination. Even the Art Director's Guild has only bothered to recognize his often breathtaking, amusing or mood enhancing work once (The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou). I bet you can conjure up images right now of his contributions to movies like The Darjeeling Limited, Across the Universe, Far From Heaven, Pollock, The Ice Storm and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. But I don't have a Friedberg blind spot. I haven't forgotten his rich work on Synecdoche New York. He's one of the five Art Direction nominees in my ninth annual awards (this is Friedberg's third Fb nomination. He received a silver medal for »

Chicago – I expect “Appaloosa” to be one of the more hard-to-get movies at your local video stores for the next few months. It’s the kind of movie - action-driven and widely missed in theaters - that does very well on the home market. Renters will find an old-fashioned Western that may not transcend its genre but will certainly provide more than enough entertainment on a snowy winter’s eve.
With “Appaloosa,” the great Ed Harris steps behind the camera to direct for the first time since “Pollock,” and the result is an old-fashioned Western in the mold of “3:10 to Yuma” or “Open Range”. Harris shoots for the timeless quality of the genre, the one that makes “Appaloosa” feel like it could have been made fifty years ago without much change to the production at all. On one hand, it’s refreshing to see an ensemble as talented as »
