Mary Robinette Kowal - The Eight Worst Anachronisms in Fantasy

5 November 2009 9:00 PM, PST | amctv.com - SciFi Scanner: Mary Robinette Kowal | See recent amctv.com - SciFi Scanner: Mary Robinette Kowal news »

There are two types of anachronisms in fantasy: intentional and accidental. The former -- when a modern item is introduced for comic effect, as when the audience sings "We Will Rock You" at a joust in A Knight's Tale -- often amuse me. The latter type amuse me in a much different way, because many of them could have been solved by having an intern check dates. There's fantasy, then »

What are Your Guilty Pleasure Movies, but Don't Like to Admit It?

14 October 2009 12:38 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I thought the response to my "Do You Ever Lie about the Movies You've Seen? " post was excellent, and on top of everything so many of you said, several new questions came as a result. One of them, offered by 'Steve Mott', asks the question in the headline: Do you have guilty pleasures you don't like to admit to?

Steve lists his guilty pleasure as 10 Things I Hate About You, a film I personally love and was just discussing recently with a friend when the topic of "Where the hell did Julia Stiles go?" came up. To that effect I also love Save the Last Dance and to answer the Stiles question before someone gets smart in the comments, yes, she has the Bourne films and wrote and directed a film starring Zooey Deschanel and has also been doing plenty of work on stage. Moving along...

Purefoy Collects Movie Swords

18 September 2009 12:26 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British movie star James Purefoy loves signing up for swordfighting epics - because it's a cheap way of updating his impressive blade collection.

The Resident Evil star always insists on keeping the swords his characters have wielded in projects like A Knight's Tale, Rome, Don Quixote and George & The Dragon and he's built up a cache of weapons.

He tells WENN, "I keep them all in the hall of my house just in case I have to face any marauding west London invaders!

"I don't think they're worth much, maybe three or four pounds! I have one from George and The Dragon, one from Solomon Kane, Don Quixote, Lancelot and I'm about to do another sword movie (Ironclad), so I'll have one from that one as well.

"My favourite is the one from Solomon Kane because those were the best fights with opponents of the highest rate you could possibly imagine. I would like an action figure to be made from this movie. I'm very proud of it." »

Five-Minute Trailer for Paul Bettany's 'Legion'

13 August 2009 2:02 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Paul Bettany, if nothing else, is usually better than the material he's handed. Because he's not a major star, he usually has to play supporting roles, like in A Knight's Tale, which he completely stoles, and The Da Vinci Code, in which he was scary. If he gets the chance for a leading role, it's usually small and quiet.

Legion could change that. Bettany joins Dennis Quaid and several others as humanity's last chance against a growing and seemingly unstoppable apocalypse. A lot of that going on these days. In fact, another apocalyptic flick, The Book of Eli, opens the previous week, so who knows if audiences will want to look so bleakly into the future on back-to-back weekends.

A new Red Band trailer (that means intended for adults) has been unveiled for Legion, and to make it really stand out, it's over five minutes long. And why not? The »

Sean Bean Lands Lead in Game of Thrones

20 July 2009 9:48 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Sean Bean is returning to the fantasy world. The Lord of the Rings star has landed the lead role in HBO’s Game of Thrones, an adaptation of the series of books by George R.R. Martin. The cast also includes Peter Dinklage (The Chronicles of Narnia), Mark Addy (A Knight's Tale), Kit Harrington, Jack Gleeson and Harry Lloyd. The books revolve around a battle among seven kingdoms and between two ruling families for control of the Iron Throne, the possession that ensures survival through a 40-year winter to come. Bean will play Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark, known for his sense of honor and justice, who becomes closest adviser to King Robert (Addy). Harrington will play Jon Snow, Bean's bastard son, and Lloyd will play Viserys, a powerless ruler who seeks to marry off his sister to a powerful king. Gleeson will play Joffrey, King Robert's son. Tudyk fights Evil

8 July 2009 3:42 PM, PDT | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

While he's surely developed a fanbase (particularly those fond of coats that are brown) from his droll pilot Wash in Joss Whedon's "Firefly" and Serenity, Alany Tudyk has been great in plenty of other secondary roles in movies like A Knight's Tale, 3:10 To Yuma and Dodgeball (yarr). Now he's stepping up to the front to literally take on badness in Tucker And Dale Vs. Evil, an indie horror-comedy already shooting up in Calgary. Tudyk and Tyler Labine ("Reaper") play... »

Trailer - Paul Bettany as Charles Darwin in 'Creation'

13 June 2009 8:40 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

This year is the bicentennial of Charles Darwin, the father of the Theory of Evolution. Little known fact: He was also the father of the original pogo stick. Perhaps if they make a sequel to Creation...

Yes, the film with the ironic title is about Darwin's discovery and his personal and professional struggles to stand by arguably the single most important scientific notion between gravity and relativity. Paul Bettany plays Darwin and Jennifer Connelly, conveniently, portrays his wife.

I've been a Bettany fan since A Knight's Tale, and he has a knack of being better than the material. Usually, it just doesn't say much for the material, but I sure hope the scripts catch up to him sooner than later. Here's the first trailer for Creation: »

Franco Joins McBride To Get High Again

1 April 2009 12:11 AM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

King James Of Franco is set to join The Right Royal Danny McBride for medieval-regal exploits in Your Highness, helmed by their Pineapple Express director David Gordon Green.  Like a hybrid of A Knight's Tale and the role-playing bits in Role Models, with a little bit of The Neverending Story throne in for good measure (sorry), the comedy will follow a pair of vain, spoiled medieval princes who must unite in a quest to save their family and kingdom from an evil wizard. We first reported on this back in May last year, when it was due to begin production in early 2009. The shoot will now kick off on July 20 in Belfast. The whole thing was put together by McBride (who wrote the screenplay withhis Foot Fist Way collaborator Ben Best), Gordon Green and Role Models producer Scott Stuber. In the meantime, McBride is limbering up for the release of »

Bettany a Obsessed Man of the Cloth in 'Priest'

30 March 2009 11:56 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

One thing has been consistently true about Paul Bettany: He makes movies better. He doesn't always make the best decisions in terms of the quality of films, but whether it's A Knight's Tale or Da Vinci Code or Firewall, Bettany is generally at least as interesting as his surroundings. That's especially good news with the project shows as much promise as Priest.

The film is described by The Hollywood Reporter as a "horror western" Screen Gems is developing based on the TokyoPop comic of the same name. He would play a warrior priest who turns his back on his church to hunt down the vampires how kidnapped his niece. So there are elements of The Searchers here...but with vampires and religious overtones. »

9 March 2009 10:31 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Scott Grimes, Alan Doyle and Kevin Durand have been cast as the group of adventurers in Universal and Imagine Entertainment’s Robin Hood tale being directed by Ridley Scott, report the trades. Russell Crowe stars as the title character and the film is being billed as a retelling of the origins of the key characters of the Robin Hood legend. Cate Blanchett is on board as Maid Marian in the project written by Brian Helgeland (Man on Fire, A Knight's Tale). Grimes, who lends his voice to Fox’s American Dad and stars as Dr. Archie Morris in NBC’s ER, has been cast in the role of Will Scarlet, a skilled swordsman and Hood's nephew. Doyle, lead singer of the folk group Great Big Sea, is playing Alan a Dayle who in lore was a roving minstrel and needed help when his love was being forced to marry another man. »

Cate Blanchett Confirmed For Robin Hood

25 February 2009 10:42 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

It's been rumoured for some time, but it has now been confirmed that Cate Blanchett will play Maid Marion in the probably-titled Robin Hood, formerly Nottingham, from Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe, making this English tale thoroughly Australian*.The story, as described by Variety, will apparently stay fairly close to the historical facts of the 12th century**, and casts Robin of Loxley (Crowe) as an abandoned child brought up by the people of Nottingham, who therefore develops a strong sense of community feeling. But, psychology fans, that early abandonment means he has Trust Issues, making it hard for him to fall in love. He meets his match in Blanchett's strong and independent Maid Marion.Brian Helgeland (the man who made jousting cool in A Knight's Tale) wrote the latest version of the story, which is described as the "Gladiator version" of the legend, and filming on the $130 million-budgeted film »

Cate Blanchett Set for Robin Hood

25 February 2009 10:18 PM, PST | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

The trades have now officially confirmed that Cate Blanchett has joined the cast of Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood, formerly titled Nottingham. The actress, who was rumored to be in talks weeks ago, will play Maid Marian. Russell Crowe stars as the title character. The Robin Hood project has evolved considerably since its inception, when in February 2007 Universal won a heated bidding war to pick up a revisionist take on the legend with a script by Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris (Kung Fu Panda). The script was based on the idea of making the Sheriff of Nottingham a good guy. Crowe was attached to play the sheriff who was to have acted as more of an investigator trying to learn more about the thief known as Robin Hood. Brian Helgeland (Mystic River, A Knight's Tale) came on board to rewrite the script in mid-2007, and the flick is now an »

Ye Olde Ironclad In The Works

5 February 2009 11:01 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Action thriller Ironclad is shaping up to be a proper medieval free-for-all, with news that sword-and-sandal veteran James Purefoy has joined the ContentFilm project.Set in England after the signing of the Magna Carta, Ironclad tells story of a determined group of Knights Templars who defend Rochester Castle from the devious King John. The Templars - a kind of medieval A-Team charged with protecting pilgrims throughout Europe - will be led by Purefoy, who mobilises the group against Paul Giamatti's King John.Purefoy, of course, knows his way around a suit of armour, having played Mark Anthony in the BBC miniseries Rome and The Black Prince in A Knight's Tale. He joins Robert Carlyle, Bob Hoskins, William Moseley, Pete Postlethwaite and Lord Richard Attenborough, who's eschewing the sword-wielding to play Archbishop Langton. It's certainly an interesting sounding cast, if a little short on damsels (there are rumours of Megan Fox »

Bill Nighy in Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Aaaaargh!

Photo: Screen Gems They say 'sex sells.' Too bad "they" are too busy trying to sell sex instead of trying to help you figure out how to potentially get it. That's why I am here... There are a few things that might increase your chances: (1) having a lovable, little dog with you while running on the beach; (2) owning a surfboard that is completely visible from your doorway despite that you live nowhere near a beach; (3) not talking about Grant Theft Auto for more than exactly three sentences. But if these things are all too hard, just try taking any average paramour with the desire to relax the brain and work other muscles out to the movie. For that endeavor, here is your weekly, one-stop guide to your girl's best friend (and the inner girl in you). Wait a second -- »

Heath Ledger: One Fan's Perspective

This is our simple tribute to the young actor we all admire.) - - - - - - Today is the one-year anniversary of Heath Ledger's death. I suppose it's not really necessary for me to add my small voice to the chorus of solemn tributes and fangirly hysterics that will no doubt be whispered and shouted all over the net today. I'm going to anyway. Don't worry; it's going to be brief. To say that he was a talented actor with extraordinary good looks is to state the obvious, but his looks weren't what initially drew me to him. »

Int: Paul Bettany

21 January 2009 5:59 AM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Paul Bettany can pull off anything, from Geoffrey Chaucer in A Knight's Tale to the A. I. Jarvis in Iron Man to a very creepy albino in The Davinci Code. But he tops them all as the long haired, shirtless (which could make this my personal favorite), fire juggling character Dustfinger in the new film Inkheart. I got a chance to chat with Bettany about his role as a man read out of a book and into our world, his wife Jennifer Connelly's cameo and working with a stinky ferret...lucky little... »

Heath's Friends Weigh In on His Life One Year Later

It's hard to believe almost a year has gone by since Heath Ledger's tragic passing, but next Thursday will be the one-year anniversary of his death. He's already been honored with a few posthumous awards, including a Golden Globe, and with Oscar nominations less than a week away, the buzz around Heath's performance in The Dark Knight is as loud as ever. To continue honoring and celebrating his memory, Entertainment Weekly made Heath its cover story with quotes and highlights about his life from the people that worked closely with the actor and grew to know and love him over the years. Here are a few highlights from the touching article: Gil Junger, director, 10 Things I Hate About You: "Heath came in to read, and he exuded a sexuality so uncommon for a man of that age. As soon as he left, I stood up and said, 'Ladies, I »
