My deepest sympathies go to the Jennings family, and the extended ABC News family, this morning. I can only hope that the massive outpouring of sympathy and sharing of memories can in time provide some small measure of comfort during their time of loss. Mr. Jennings was the face and voice of the news for so many Canadian and American families, and many of us felt the same way about Peter as we did about Johnny Carson - we welcomed him into our homes every night and always thought he would be there. Like so many others, I grew up watching ABC's World News Tonight, and just last evening I watched the news and wondered how Peter was faring, because it was so odd to hear his name attached to the show yet not hear his familiar voice. When I remember major events, the memories usually have Peter's voice attached. Viewers connected with him on so many levels that he truly became part of our lives. We celebrated good news with him, and heard the nation's emotions echo in his voice the days when the world just didn't make sense. My mother and I were absurdly proud the day he announced his new American dual-citizenship, feeling that the world traveler had finally come home.
The Lord and St. Peter must have been waiting at the Gates for Mr. Jennings, and I certainly hope they had all the answers ready for him. May the Lord bless and keep Peter, and may He bless and comfort his family and friends.
