This is easily among the best "compilation of theatrical cartoons" shows ever to air, mainly due to Walter Lantz's between-cartoon segments where he explained how cartoons are made. This was a creative concept at the time and still is, perhaps even more so today. I was more familiar with the mechanics of computer animation than traditional animation (and computer animation is relatively simple, regardless of how much work and money can be spent on making effects with it), and seeing these segments was a delight to me, as I'm sure it was to many children of the late 50's who were intrigued to see how Woody Woodpecker cartoons were made.
But here's the show's problem: it had a tendency to only show the cartoons which had just made the rounds in theatres across America. So you ended up seeing an awful lot of Paul J. Smith hackwork (and Paul himself is seen and identified in a few segments). But thanks to the DVDs including only the segments explaining the animation process (along with the customary complete episode), you don't have to slog through mediocre cartoons to see them.
Watching Woody cartoons on their own is a suitable alternative to this show, but the animation segments are intriguing enough to give the show a recommendation. If you don't already have the DVDs, this is worth checking out.
Oh, and one more thing: there is no such thing as a late 1990s revival of Woody Woodpecker. That's just a blasphemous rumour.
