November 20: DVD alternatives to this weekend’s multiplex offerings

20 November 2009 2:12 PM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

We know how it is: You’d like to go to the movies this weekend, but there’s all that sighing and sulking and brooding over your immortal undead lover to do, and that’s just exhausting. But you can have a multiplex-like experience at home with a collection of the right DVDs. And when someone asks you on Monday, “Hey, did you see New Moon this weekend?” you can reply, “No, I watched some vampire and werewolf movies that don’t suck instead.” Instead Of: The Twilight Saga: New Moon, in which -- Omg! -- adorable clumsy beautiful humble human Bella has to choose between her love for sparkly mopey vampire Edward and her attraction to buff buff werewolf Jacob... Watch: A real vampire movie... like 2000’s Shadow of the Vampire, a sly sendup of bloodsuckers and moviemaking; its premise is along the lines of: What would happen if »

Nicolas Cage: Bad To The Bone

By

Alex Simon

It’s an inevitable event in every accomplished artist’s life: if you go back on the timeline of their existence and stop in adolescence, almost all of our greatest actors, writers, filmmakers, musicians and painters went through tumultuous, tortured teenage years, often scorned, almost universally ridiculed by their peers and elders alike for the cardinal sin of being “weird.” Most people run from their inner nerd as they grow into adulthood, masking it behind toned muscle, fine clothing and the right haircut, struggling to be that cool guy or gal whom we knew had all the answers and the clearest skin back when such things started to be de rigeur in our lives (and if you live in Southern California, continue to be).

Nicolas Cage is that rare movie star who not only never seemed to care if he was cool, »

Pat Seals of Flyleaf Shares His Top Ten Horror Films

9 November 2009 10:24 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

As we've mentioned previously, November 10th is the release date of the band Flyleaf's new CD, entitled Memento Mori, and to help celebrate the occasion, their bass player, Pat Seals, has taken time out of his hectic schedule to prepare for Dread Central readers a list of his Top Ten favorite horror films.

Nothing relieves the stress of the holidays -- or anything really -- like a good horror flick, and Pat certainly has prepared an eclectic catalog that shows he knows his shit about our genre.

Without further ado, here's Pat's list (click each image to see the full poster):

1. The Addiction (1995) - Dir. Abel Ferrara, Starring Lili Taylor

This is my favorite vampire movie. It is the best. The best. Morality and the darkness of human nature are the focus, and Lili Taylor's performance is brutal. Plus, Christopher Walken waltzes in for a philosophical cameo. The »

Bah, Humbug. It's Too Early For 'A Christmas Carol'!

3 November 2009 9:45 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

We've all lamented the way that Christmas decorations, candies, and wrapping paper start appearing on store shelves between fake pumpkins and cheesecloth ghosts. In some stores, the Christmas stuff appears as early as July or August. But when it comes to our local multiplex, we're generally safe from holly and plum pudding until it's actually cold outside. Not this year.

Being entertainment fiends, I'm sure that the last week found most of you were tuning into AMC, IFC, and other assorted channels to check out their horror selections. You were also undoubtedly watching your favorite television shows, football teams, and following the World Series. I'll bet that you saw the tv spots for A Christmas Carol around ten times a day. Possibly more than that given all the games. Did you feel a cold chill run down your spine?

I did, and it wasn't caused by a pocky Jim Carrey »

Interview: Willem Dafoe on Lars von Trier’s Controversial ‘Antichrist’

21 October 2009 3:32 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The legendary Willem Dafoe, star of modern classics like “Platoon” and “Shadow of the Vampire,” is still one of the hardest working men in Hollywood. He has two films opening this week, a cameo role in “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant” and a lead in the controversial “Antichrist,” which he brought to the 45th Chicago International Film Festival and took time for an interview with HollywoodChicago.com.

Lars von Trier’s “Antichrist” has been stirring up controversy since it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. With graphic violence, nudity, and themes not often seen in movies, “Antichrist” has been polarizing audiences. One thing commonly agreed upon is the quality of the performances at the center of the piece. Gainsbourg won an acting award at Cannes and Dafoe has been receiving unanimous praise.

Udo Kier talks Herzog and Lynch’s My Son

6 April 2009 9:14 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Fango spoke to Udo Kier the other day for our 30th-anniversary issue (#284, on sale in May), and got a couple of extra tidbits about his latest genre project, My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. The film, which we last reported on here, brings together the unique filmmaking talents of Werner Herzog and David Lynch (the latter serving as executive producer), along with an equally eclectic cast including Kier, his Shadow Of The Vampire co-star Willem Dafoe, Bug’s Michael Shannon, genre fave Brad Dourif, Sisters’ Chloe Sevigny and Twin PeaksGrace Zabriskie.

“The film is based on a true story from 1979,” Kier tells us, “and is about a young actor played by Michael Shannon, with Chloe Sevigny as his girlfriend. They’re both actors, and I’m Mario, their teacher. We’re doing a Greek play by Sophocles that’s very intense, and [Shannon’s character] goes home at one point »

In Brief: Jonah Hex, The Crazies, Day Of The Triffids

31 March 2009 11:54 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that Will Arnett (Arrested Development) and Michael Shannon (Dead Birds) have joined the cast of Jonah Hex. Both actors previously appeared together in the 2006 comedy Let's Go To Prison, and will join a cast that includes Josh Brolin (Grindhouse: Planet Terror), John Malkovich (Shadow Of The Vampire), and Megan Fox (Jennifer's Body, Transformers). The adaptation of the popular DC Comics horror/western begins shooting this month.

The UK site Broadcast Now has snagged the first image from the BBC's remake, The Day Of The Triffids. This is the third time that the John Wyndham novel has seen a live-action adaptation, following a 1962 film, and a 1981 Australian mini-series. Wyndham also wrote The Midwich Cuckoos, the source material upon which Village Of The Damned was based. 'Midwich has also been adapted three times. The latest 'Triffids stars Brian Cox, Jason Priestly, Dougray Scott, and Eddie Izzard »

Cast announced for Lynch and Herzog’s My Son

6 February 2009 12:16 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Screen Daily has revealed the cast for Werner Herzog’s next directorial effort, the horror film My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done? The movie marks Herzog’s first collaboration with fellow screen maverick David Lynch, who serves as executive producer.

Michael Shannon, the Bug star (pictured) who’s currently up for an Oscar for Revolutionary Road, Shadow Of The Vampire’s Willem Dafoe, SistersChloe Sevigny, Fango fave Udo Kier and Lynch-film regular Grace Zabriskie will star in My Son, which Eric Bassett is producing. The movie is inspired by a true case in which a San Diego man, obsessed by a Sophocles play, murdered his mother with a sword. “I always wanted to make a horror film, but not with bloody axes and chainsaws,” Herzog tells the trade, though he previously dabbled in the genre with Nosferatu The Vampyre and the mockumentary Incident At Loch Ness. »
