Rumer Refused Help From Parents

16 November 2008 5:46 PM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Hollywood newcomer Rumer Willis refused to take any favours from her famous parents, so she could make it as an actress in her own right.

The daughter of divorced Hollywood power couple Bruce Willis and Demi Moore was determined to carve out her own career, without being accused of benefitting from her parents' connections.

And Willis is starting to make her own mark on the industry; she recently landed roles in The House Bunny and forthcoming film Wild Cherry.

Dad Bruce says, "She sat us down and said, 'I know you two think you're big shots, but I don't want any help'. And she went off and got work on her own."

Although she has now refused help from her famous parents, Willis' Hollywood career was kickstarted by appearances in their films. She starred alongside Moore in 1996 movie Striptease, and twice with father Bruce in 2000's The Whole Nine Yards and Hostage in 2005.

McCarthy Upset About Peet's 'Parasite' Comments

30 September 2008 7:02 AM, PDT | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Jenny McCarthy has taken aim at Amanda Peet over scathing comments the actress made about parents who refuse to vaccinate their children.

McCarthy is leading a campaign to overhaul America's immunisation programmes, claiming vaccinations are largely responsible for autism.

The actress/model, who is the mother of a recovered autistic child, led a rally in Washington, D.C. this summer, calling for the Federal Government to clean vaccines of all toxins and to change a loaded schedule of immunisation, which experts claim leads to the cause of autism.

The cause is controversial because leading medical groups insist there's no clear proof that vaccinations lead to autism.

And the issue hit the headlines again earlier this year when new mum Peet spoke out against those refusing to vaccinate their children from diseases. The actress called parents taking the stand "parasites" in a magazine interview.

She said, "There are a lot of misconceptions about the dangers of vaccinations... (but) frankly, I feel that parents who don't vaccinate their children are parasites."

She has since apologised for her comments, but McCarthy, for one, is refusing to accept The Whole Nine Yards star's regrets.

She rages, "She has a lot of balls to come forward and be on that side, because there is an angry mob on my side. I like the fact that I can say she's completely wrong... Until she walks in our shoes she has no idea."

Meanwhile, officials at the steering group that McCarthy represents - Autism United - are calling for members to boycott Peet's films after learning she has agreed to become a celebrity spokesperson for rival child welfare group Every Child By Two - because she was concerned about the information about vaccinations circulating throughout Hollywood.

Autism United executive director John Gilmore says, "We want to send a clear message to her (Peet). Our community will not support the continued misinformation that is funneled into the media by organisations like Ecbt.

"We are not against vaccines, rather we are for safe vaccines. Until they understand that, we won't back down. Ms Peet's comments are deplorable and an apology will not suffice. We applaud Jenny McCarthy's continued efforts and for speaking up for our community."

Weekend Estimates: 'Thunder' 6th R-rated Movie Since 2000 to Win Three Straight w/$11.5M 3-day and $14.2M 4-day; 'Babylon' More Distant No. 2 Than Expected; 'Dark Knight' Tops $500M; 'Traitor' Solid, but 'Disaster,' 'College' and 'Hamlet' Disappoint!

Steve Mason is now on Facebook. Sunday 11:00 a.m. (Pacific): Tropic Thunder (DreamWorks/Paramount) has clinched another box office crown, becoming only the sixth R-rated movie since 2000 to win three straight weekends. The Ben Stiller-directed movie satire scored an excellent $11.5 million third weekend, and it should finish the four-day Labor Day weekend with an estimated $14.2 million, for a new cume of $86.5 million. The only other R-rated movies to pull off a hat trick of weekend wins in the past eight years were The Whole Nine Yards (2000), Hannibal (2001), American Pie 2 (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001) and The Passion of the Christ (2002). Even a box office phenomenon like 300 only managed back-to-back three-day victories.
