Although several scenes in the film depict actual, not simulated, intercourse and show a naked man with an erect penis, the French film Romance (1999) has been given a certificate allowing it to be screened in mainstream British movie houses. In issuing the certificate, the British Board of Film Classification pointed out that the film provides insights "about the difficulty of separating sex from love." In an interview with the BBC on Tuesday, French filmmaker Catherine Breillat said, "If people go to see Romance with arousal on their minds they will be disappointed. Marie (the lead character) is someone who confronts herself and the fact that she despises herself sexually." Breillat also expressed disappointment that the film had been rejected by the MPAA in the U.S., presumably meaning that it had received an NC-17 rating. …
