Dinner for Schmucks
Opens: July 23rd 2010
Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams
Director: Jay Roach
Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.
Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".
The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can

Steven Soderbergh had a remarkable 12 films in theaters between 2000 and 2009. That includes two shiny Oscar winners, "Erin Brockovich" (which nabbed Julia Roberts a statuette) and "Traffic," and a potential third, "The Informant!"; all three installments of the blockbuster "Ocean's" franchise; three fast-and-loose video experiments ("Full Frontal," "Bubble" and "The Girlfriend Experience"); an anti-period piece period piece ("The Good German"); an anti-biopic biopic ("Che"); and a sorely underrated remake/distillation of a sci-fi classic ("Solaris").
And that's not even counting his contribution to the 2004 omnibus "Eros," or the ten episodes of HBO series "K Street" he helmed. By virtue of unstoppable output alone, Soderbergh's made more of a mark on the '00s than any other working director. But that's not why he's my pick for director of the decade.
Back in 1989, Soderbergh kicked off the giddy golden age of independent film with "Sex, Lies, and Videotape," and while the following

Nothing like a role in Twilight to break you into show business. That's the case for Ashley Greene, who had spent most of her time in Hollywood as a hostess in an L.A. restaurant prior to her fame-making role as Alice Cullen. The Floridian native just finishing touring the country in support of New Moon and she'll start filming the horror film Apparition in Berlin in February. We chatted with Greene days before New Moon started breaking records.
Are the reactions to Twilight the same all around the country?

The Girlfriend Experience is one of the more courageous and challenging films to come out this year, and the fact that it Soderbergh’s can give us all hope. An odd beast, Steven Soderbergh; an odd, Janus-faced movie beast. An Oscar-winning director (nominated twice in the same year—a feat only equalled once before, in 1938, by Michael Curtiz, who didn’t win) who pumps out the mall-pleasers like Ocean’s 11, 12, and 13 (though the mall was, apparently, less pleased with 12), Out of Sight, and—let’s face it—Erin Brockovich. He also has a doppelganger, his Imp of the Perverse, that turns out uncompromising, indie fare like Schizopolis, the brilliant Full Frontal, and the even more brilliant Bubble. But it isn’t a case of Robert Altman Syndrome (a director, God rest his soul, seemingly bent on immolating his career and repeatedly swallowing a grenade—like Prêt-à-Porter after The Player and

The scene featured in the clip is the “Thanador Chase”. It features Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver’s characters, Jake Scully and Dr. Grace Augustine, taking their Avatar bodies out for a spin in the alien jungles of Pandora, only to run afoul of some local wildlife, in this case, a “Thanador.”
If you haven’t been impressed by Avatar’s visuals so far, may this will change your mind?

Jose here bringing you the Monday Monologue.
From the moment Erin Brockovich was released, in March of 2000, everyone knew that Julia Roberts would win an Oscar for it. There was nary a review that did not point out how fantastic she was, how she carried the burdens of a dramatic role so well (after practically creating the entire rom-com movement throughout the 90's) and how big her boobs looked.
But beyond the awards craze, the "she can act" novelty and the miniskirts, the truth is that Julia had created a character all her own. One that might've looked and sounded like Julia Roberts, but was all Erin Brockovich.
This is never as evident as in a small, intimate scene where Erin opens up to a man (her biker neighbor played by Aaron Eckhart) for the first time in years. Are you gonna be something else that I have to survive?

What follows is my original top ten list of 2000... or rather the revised version I published in 2002. Let's discuss each year of this decade as it winds down! Who's with me?!? It's always interesting to see which films remained at the forefront of our memory and which fade... both for a variety of reasons, quality being only one factor. New comments are in red.
Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2000. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were released in their home country or in La or whatnot.
Runners Up (in descending order): Une Liaisons Pornographique, Nurse Betty, You Can Count On Me, Before Night Falls, Pola X, Chicken Run, American Psycho, Wonder Boys and Billy Elliott Um... What The Hell are some of these movies doing outside the top ten list? You Can Count on Me

Steven Soderbergh says 'The Informant!' was
"embarrassingly easy" to direct.
The Oscar-winning film maker - who has previously worked on
Hollywood blockbusters like 'Erin Brockovich' and 'Oceans
Eleven - says the dark comedy was a simple film to make because they lead
actor Matt Damon was perfect for the role.
He said: "Making the movie was the most fun I've
had on a shoot since 'Erin Brockovich.' It was the right material,
the right actor, the right time. I have to say, it felt embarrassingly
easy."
Matt plays Mark Whitacre, a corporate whistleblower who
attempts to bring down a Us business giant but ends up embezzling more that $9
million. The 39-year-old actor had to put on 30lb in weight for the role.
Steven recently revealed revealed Matt loved bulking up for
the part.
He said: "I think he really had fun doing it - he

The Girlfriend Experience (2009) covers several days in the life of a high-end escort in Manhattan. Media coverage surrounding this independent effort from director Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Erin Brockovich) highlighted his choice of adult film star, Sasha Grey, to portray the main character, Chelsea. I had never heard of the aspiring actress (she's done over 100 "movies" to date) before the film's publicity efforts, but a quick Google search returned probably more info and pictures than most straight laced folks would desire. Those familiar with Sasha's oeuvre hoping to get artsy-fartsy Hollywood porn will be sadly disappointed, as there is barely any nudity and no explicit sex on display.
What makes Chelsea's services unique is that for $2000 per hour she provides what is alluded to in the title, time with a significant other. She gets wined and dined, for the most part, by high earning businessmen while making conversation about their daily

CBS Films has sent over the first image and a first look featurette from director Tom Vaughan’s (”Starter for 10,” “What Happens in Vegas”) “Extraordinary Measures”. The film stars Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell and it’s inspired by the true story of John Crowley, a man who defied conventional wisdom and great odds, and risked his family’s future to pursue a cure for his children’s life threatening disease. While the featurette is mostly the real John Crowley talking about his story, at the end Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser say a few words. While this kind of movie might not appeal to all of you, with the cast involved, I thought it was worth sharing. I’m hoping with Tom Vaughan directing it’ll be more than a movie of the week. Take a look at the image and featurette after the jump. “Extraordinary Measures

This is a movie we've been following closely since May (See Cher Joins Christina Aguilera in Musical "Burlesque" and Christina Aguilera to Star in Titillating Musical "Burlesque"). Why? Because it's being called "Showgirls" the Musical starring Cher and Christina Aguilera.
But I'm sure it's not going to be as campy as "Showgirls" gosh darn it!
Now, Stanley Tucci is joining Cher and Christina Aguilera in the film to be directed by Steve Antin.
Antin also wrote the script which was polished by Susannah Grant ("Erin Brockovich"! See? Not campy).
Aguilera will play an ambitious small town Iowa girl with a big voice who finds love, family and success in a Los Angeles burlesque club. Cher will play Tess, a former dancer who takes the small town girl under her wing. Tucci will star as the manager of the club and the best friend of Tess. And they will all sing and dance!

Steven Soderbergh's The Informant is released in the Us this week. Matt Damon plays Mark Whitacre, in the story of a real-life executive at a corn-based food company that went to the FBI to expose the corporation's price-fixing tactics.
This isn't the first Soderbergh film dealing with real individuals. Last year he made the history lesson disguised as film Che Parts One and Two. One of his earliest films saw the author Kafka entering a world where fiction and reality merged. And he has also made a biopic of another whistle-blower. It bagged an Oscar for it's lead actress Julia Roberts, and lost out on the award for best film to Soderbergh's own Traffic. I'll see you on the other side for a look at 2000's Erin Brockovich.

'Love surprises you,' the actor says of the plot of his new film.

Beverly Hills, California — Has there ever been an actor quite like Aaron Eckhart? The guy rose to fame playing one of the greatest jerks in cinematic history for "In the Company of Men" and returned to that territory again for 2005's "Thank You for Smoking," but spent the near-decade in between establishing himself as one of Hollywood's most amicable personalities.
Now, after all these years of surprise successes ("Erin Brockovich") and poorly conceived failures ("The Core," "Paycheck," "The Black Dahlia"), he utilized his unusual duality to great effect playing Harvey "Two-Face" Dent in "The Dark Knight" and has never been hotter. It only makes sense that once again he'd throw us all for a loop with "Love Happens," a Jennifer Aniston romantic film that is far darker than you'd expect.
