The players: Director: Ben Stiller, Writers: Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux, Etan Cohen, Cast: Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel, Nick Nolte, Steve Coogan, Danny R. McBride, Brandon T. Jackson
Facts of interest: Stiller also directed "Zoolander," "The Cable Guy" and "Reality Bites."
The plot: A bunch of Hollywood actors are on the run from ruthless killers after their director drops them off in the middle of the jungle.
Our quick thoughts: A solid mixture of satire and spoof, Ben Stiller’s “Tropic Thunder” should wildly entertain those who don’t feel offended by the film’s high dose of rude jokes. DreamWorks’ risqué comedy packs quite a few laughs and boasts plenty of fast-paced action, complete with a brilliant cast of big-time Hollywood players who don’t care to mock their own work.

It's easy to forget the clever, absurdist Ben Stiller behind The Ben Stiller Show, especially since the mugging dumbshow Ben Stiller of Meet The Parents is generally much more visible. Stiller's performance is easily the weakest element of Tropic Thunder: Like his Zoolander character, he only has a handful of exaggerated expressions, and he cycles through them on cue. But it's easy to forgive him, given how thoroughly enjoyable Tropic Thunder is on virtually every other count. Where Stiller the actor seems outmatched by the more expressive talents on display, Stiller the co-writer and director contributes a lively, layered comedy packed with cheap but hilarious goofs on Hollywood, from fake trailers for horrible (yet strangely familiar) movies to roman à clef parodies of Hollywood personalities to actors and celebrities outright mocking themselves. The story centers on a big Hollywood war movie on its way down the tubes. It's "a.

With the summer's end in sight, this week might represent the last hurrah in the name of good fun before the gloomy, Oscar-baiting seriousness of the fall release schedule descends upon us. Woody's back, there's a grindhouse/B-movie double header, and in the realm of blockbuster comedy, it's the wily veteran versus the young upstart as Ben Stiller battles Seth Rogen in an all-out race to the stupid.
"Anita O'Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer"
Although she was overshadowed by such greats as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, Anita O'Day became one of the "three queens of Jazz," in spite of an artform dominated by African-Americans and her struggle with her own personal demons. In this documentary, the famed white jazz vocalist reflects on nearly 70 years in the spotlight, not merely performing jazz, but living it as a lifestyle. O'Day's former manager Robbie Cavolina and

In just 24 hours, over 600 people requested over 1200 seats for Tropic Thunder! Is it because of the film itself, the first film since the now-classic Zoolander to be helmed by comedy mogul Ben Stiller, or is it because of "The Shit", a death-defying tunnel of paintball destruction we're installing in front of the Alamo South Lamar?! We know...it's Downey Jr.
So here it goes... We selected, by means of highly sophisticated randomizing technology, an equal amount of seats from two catagories: Fantastic Fest badge-holders and the general public. Winners get a seat, invaluable real estate, in the theater to watch the free advance screening of the most hilarious, blazing, raging film in the history of comedy

Movie star Ben Stiller lives it up on film sets - he has his own custom-made trailer.
The Zoolander star insists he's no diva but he likes certain home comforts when he's filming.
He says, "I told them (manufacturers) some things I thought would make it a little more comfortable than average.
"You spend a lot of time in them. On the other hand I'm not Matthew McConaughey, who has literally lived in an Airstream trailer for the past 10 years or something."
And he jokes, "It's 500 feet wide and 30 feet tall... It's the largest man-made trailer on the North American continent. It has built-in speakers and a trampoline... It's just a regular trailer, nothing groundbreaking."

This week is something of a nostalgia trip with a period comedy, Freddie Prinze Jr. and a concert documentary about a group of men who, by all the laws of man and nature, should not still be alive and walking around.
"The Flight of the Red Balloon"
After being nominated for the Palme d'Or an incredible five times at Cannes, it's no wonder that director Hou Hsiao-hsien has become a Francophile. In his first film outside of Asia, the "Three Times" auteur directs the country's first lady of cinema, Juliette Binoche, in a story about an overburdened mother who receives a much-needed lift from her son's Chinese nanny (Song Fang) as they turn the City of Lights into a magical playground for the 7-year-old Simon . a tribute to Albert Lamorisse's 1956 short. In French with subtitles.
Opens in limited release.
