Kidman: 'I love Aussie Christmasses'

21 December 2009 3:37 AM, PST | digitalspy | See recent digitalspy news »

Nicole Kidman has revealed that she wants to spend Christmas in Australia because the weather is so good. The Moulin Rouge star, who grew up in Sydney, is spending the festive season down under with husband Keith Urban, 17-month-old daughter Sunday Rose and their extended family. Kidman told Bang Showbiz: "I like a hot Christmas - in both the weather and the meal. I'll spend it with my family, I'm not interested in material things. I want (more) …

Style Hunter: Get the fashion from Syfy's 'Alice'

19 December 2009 8:40 AM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

I'm not a big science fiction fan, so it's no surprise that I rarely watch the Syfy channel, but when the network aired an ingenious retelling of my favorite childhood story Alice in Wonderland, I had to tune in. The two-part series incorporates all sorts of futuristic and surrealistic updates, but as this behind the scenes video reveals, the look of the series reflects a definite '60s vibe. And as our Style Hunter inbox shows, plenty of you want a piece of Alice's wardrobe for yourself—and I don't blame you. From her plum velvet blazer to her simple blue sheath dress, …

John Murphy has been confirmed as the new composer on board to compose original score music for Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming action comedy Kick-Ass. Murphy, whose previous credits include 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Snatch, is the third composer on the project – the two others are Ilan Eshkeri (who scored Vaughn’s previous film, Stardust) and Marius De Vries (best known for his musical direction on Moulin Rouge!), and according to …

Top 7 Films of the Decade

17 December 2009 9:46 AM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

Only picking seven films kills me. There are many that will miss this list. But I’m not here to talk about the almosts, the close calls, the could’ve beens. No. Here, we shall only talk about the top seven films of the aughts.

Click here for Top 7 Movies of the Decade (another opinion) – by Nick Allen

7. Inglourious Basterds (2009)

Recap: A group of Jewish-American soldiers known as the “Inglourious Basterds” are making their way through Nazi occupied France, killing the Germans. But a German Colonel (Christoph Waltz) is out to get them, before they get him.

Reason: It’s really tough to pick a film from 2009 for this list. Have I given it the proper amount of time? Will I feel the same way? Here’s what I thought right after I saw Basterds … best Tarantino film since Pulp Fiction. …

Over 60 Official Submissions for Best Song Oscar

17 December 2009 2:45 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

The official list of submissions for Best Song at the Academy Awards has been released. Unlike previous Oscar lists we've shown you over the past month or so, these aren't whittled down from a longer list. They're just the songs submitted for Oscar consideration, which is why when you see that Hannah Montana The Movie is on here five times, you shouldn't throw something at your monitor.

Disney loves this award, so the studio almost always submits a gazillion tunes. In fact, Mickey has ten of these submissions if I counted correcly, 11 if I didn't. So that's almost 20% of the list. But Disney movies also have a lot of songs, so it's not a disproportionate amount on those terms. Hannah Montana had quite a few tunes, so why not submit them?

You can read the official Academy rules on song submissions if you really, really have nothing better to do over at Alt Film Guide. …

Poll: Which Golden Globe nominee will win best comedy/musical picture?

16 December 2009 2:42 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

Normally, Golden Globe voters automatically choose successful musicals in the race for best comedy/musical picture. Past champs include "Sweeney Todd," "Dreamgirls," "Walk the Line," "Chicago," "Moulin Rouge," "Evita," etc. However, box office blockbuster "Mamma Mia" lost last year to "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," probably because film critics weren't dancing in the aisles alongside crazed moviegoers.

That means "Nine" might be in trouble at the Golden Globes this year, if it doesn't rally soon with reviewers. It's only scoring 26% at RottenTomatoes.

Was the anti-"Mamma Mia" vote last year a slap at Meryl Streep? If so, she's got two films in contention in this category now: "It's Complicated" and "Julie & Julia."

Globers don't usually endorse laffers with a fratboy sensibility like "The Hangover." They didn't even nominate "Knocked Up" or "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," but I hear that Hfpa members are popping champagne corks over this one this year.

"(500) Days of Summer" was a surprise inclusion, …

'Twilight' soundtrack makes Billboard's 'Best of the 2000's Soundtracks'

This decade’s film: 2000-2004

14 December 2009 8:08 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Pottermania, Tolkein-mania, Twilight-mania…it’s fair to say that the noughties have been a strong one for different kinds of mania. Moreover, it’s also been the time for some pretty awesome movies. 2000 marked a particularly promising start: American Beauty, the directorial debut from Sam Mendes was a unique critique on the American dream that attracted widespread acclaim, being nominated for 8 Academy Awards and winning 5; including Best Picture. His next project, Road to Perdition proved this success to be no fluke. Apparently this was a good time for new directors, as further evidenced by Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, and Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich. Not that the decade was limited to low-budget concept flicks. Box office-smashing comic book adaptations became the name of the game; ranging from the great (Spider-Man, X-Men and Hellboy), to the not so much (Daredevil and Fantastic Four). It became (almost) socially acceptable …

Kidman Glad To Be Out Of Sydney

14 December 2009 4:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Nicole Kidman refuses to move back to Sydney, Australia from the U.S. - because the paparazzi constantly hound the actress in her native country.

The Moulin Rouge! star sold her home in the city in May for around $10.5 million (£6.5 million), as she lives full time in Nashville, Tennessee with her husband Keith Urban and their daughter Sunday Rose.

And Kidman is adamant she made the right decision - because the press intrusion in Sydney was ruining their day-to-day life.

She says, "It (media attention) makes certain cities impossible to live in. Like Sydney, it makes it impossible for us to live there.

"We certainly don't get that treatment in Tennessee. But it goes with the territory. It's just, we have to be careful, just to maintain some sort of semblance of a normal life for our child." …

Decade in Review: 2003 Top Ten

8 December 2009 6:30 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As you may have noticed, I will not be done with my Decade in Review until sometime into the new year. Hopefully we'll wrap up shortly after the Oscars; You know how distractingly all-consuming the Oscars can be! I hope you'll stay with it even though the rest of the media will move on any second now. They're always in such a rush. No stopping and smelling of the flowers. I've still got to update that "Actors of the Aughts" project for final compilation/statement. For now, let's move on to 2003. What follows is my original top ten list, based on films released in NYC in 2003. If I have anything new to say that'll be in red after the original text.

Special Mentions: The Cremaster Cycle and Angels in America

Most Underappreciated: Hulk (Ang Lee), In the Cut (Jane Campion), Anything Else (Woody Allen), Charlies Angels: Full Throttle (McG) and …

Inside track: Golden Globes' race for best comedy/musical picture

5 December 2009 10:57 AM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

"Nine" looks like a good bet to win the Golden Globe for best comedy/musical picture. Voters almost always go for successful musicals here ("Sweeney Todd," "Dreamgirls," "Walk the Line," "Chicago," "Moulin Rouge," "Evita"). But wait! They spurned "Mamma Mia" for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" last year, but that tuner wasn't respected by film critics. "The Hangover" could be a threat, which is surprising. Usually, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. don't take Yankee frat-boy comedies seriously. Globe voters didn't nominate "Knocked Up" or "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," but inside sources say members are toasting "The Hangover" with three cheers. We don't know yet what their reaction is to "It's Complicated." It's being screened for Hfpa members …

The Naughts: The Actress of the '00s

4 December 2009 10:17 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

If time is an avenger, then the Naughts have had it both ways with Nicole Kidman. In the span of a decade, Kidman was transformed from arm candy into an artist -- the rare movie star who made genuinely interesting choices -- eclipsing her ex-husband, Tom Cruise, who filed for divorce in 2000, with an Oscar win and the embrace, finally, of her peers on her own terms.

However, as the '00s limp to a close, Kidman seems to be succumbing to a personal vendetta against time: by manipulating her face into a mask -- a waxworks ideal of "Nicole Kidman" -- rather than continuing to deploy it as a functional instrument, an artist's tool, Kidman is taking perhaps the most surprising risk of her career: she has chosen to age into glacial iconicity. In this, she exemplifies a decade that treated actresses with ambivalence, waving all the flags of …

Top Ten Overrated Films

3 December 2009 9:58 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Overrated films are an interesting breed. They are essentially the type that everybody goes crazy for until consideration, time, thought and retrospect force us to reassess the situation. They are, by and large, the product of Hollywood: though by no means exclusive. However, Hollywood films are the most hyped; the most seen; the most heard. They are garnered with awards and flattery and the cycle begins again. Is it genius of deception or commerce?

Orson WellesCitizen Kane is often labelled as “the greatest film ever made”. It will not appear in this list. It is not an overrated film. Even now, in the sixty-plus years since its release, Welles’ masterpiece remains inimitable. Searching for something to dislike in it is pointless. Yes, critics go ga-ga for Orson, and so they should. He was a true maverick.

If one looks at the history of the Best Film award at the Oscars, …

Decade in Review: 2002 Top Ten

2 December 2009 7:58 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As with 2000 and 2001, I'm reprinting my original top ten lists and commentary. If I've got something new to say, it'll be in red below.

Please note: This list was based on NYC release dates in the year 2002. Some movies are listed as different years at the IMDb based on when they were produced or released in their home country or in La or whatnot.

Undervalued: Morvern Callar, Roger Dodger, About a Boy, White Oleander, Panic Room and Kissing Jessica Stein Top 10 Runners Up: Chicago, Monsoon Wedding, Punch Drunk Love and Spirited Away I still am glad I championed most of these movies though I am sad that some of them aren't in the top ten... particularly Morvern, Monsoon and the Miyazaki. The MMMs. Though I'm not sure I'd know what to remove to make room for them.

Nine Posters? Nine Nominations? Nein Review!

24 November 2009 8:48 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The Nine embargo is still in place for "reviews" but lifted as far as any other discussion goes: awards and whatnot. I'm curious how there can exist an embargo on discussing a movie (outside of a review embargo which I totally understand) since people discuss movies freely for years before they come out. Free Speech! I'm joking. It's an awards season curiousity but I play along. After all, the game of waiting for something you desperately want can be fun. Think of how you felt about Christmas as a child. The problem stems from the studios making film fans wait way too long. Christmas should come every weekend, you know. Movies are not like gifts. You can't just unwrap them and move to the next and form a big pile. They take 2 hours just to unwrap in the first place. Spread them out!

You know what else is curious? The new posters. …

Keith Urban And Nicole Kidman Love To Sing Together At Home

The country singer admits he would never rule out a collaboration with his actress wife – who showed off her vocal talents in ‘Moulin Rouge!’ – because they have so much fun singing together at home. He said: “Would we do something together? I don’t think it’s ever out of the question. I don’t know. We sort of do our own things professionally. But I love singing with her at home. It’s quite nice. She’s a huge inspiration for everything I do.” Nicole, 42, may not be the only member of his family Keith collaborates with in future. The singer also revealed that the couple’s 16-month-old daughter Sunday Rose is already showing signs of musical talent. He explained to America’s Ok! magazine: “She’s got some pipes. They’re loud, you know! I think so. I think she sounds quite musical. Sit her at the piano …
