It seemed like a reasonably solid idea when NBC first announced Jay Leno would take over the 10 p.m. slot on its weekday schedules: He'd always been a late-night champ, and the network was struggling for viable, inexpensive programming. And while the move didn't bode well for broadcast programming as a whole -- do the math, and we were losing five hours of prime-time fare -- it felt slightly less depressing than seeing some awful low-budget reality shows taking the slot. But now that the ratings have shaken out, down to, well, not much, and better-at-10 shows are either fading »

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit producers are considering giving a savvy fan a part in the show - after she used detective skills she picked up on TV to help police track down and arrest a burglary subject.
Justine Faeth stayed calm as a thief walked into her Manhattan office and stole a colleague's purse, an iPod and a wallet.
Using tips she had picked up from her favourite show, she collected everything the robber had touched - including a cup he had sipped water from and a tissue he used to blow his nose - and handed them over to police.
The real detectives were able to track down the thief by the DNA samples he had left behind.
Faeth told her story on America's Today show on Thursday and was thrilled when Law & Order star Mariska Hargitay called in to chat with her.
Producers now want to reward the fan even further by giving her a walk-on part in the hit drama. »

Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay has spoken out about her recent health crisis, which forced her to put her acting career on hold.
The actress suffered a collapsed lung and checked into hospital in 2008 and again earlier this year in an effort to correct the damage done by an on-set fall.
The 45 year old says, "At first I thought I had the wind knocked out of me."
But the diagnosis was much more serious.
The actress feared she was having heart problems after suffering "chest pains and shortness of breath".
She tells Redbook magazine that further problems arose on New Year's Day, when she felt as if "someone stabbed me".
She adds, "I went down on one knee and just couldn't catch my breath."
An X-ray revealed her right lung was 50 per cent collapsed and Hargitay started to "panic".
The actress reveals, "I was so scared."
The scare made the wife and mother realise just how lucky she is: "I had so much to lose, so much to live for... I have so many blessings, and I've learned from all of my experiences and my losses." »

Law & Order: SVU co-stars Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni have finally ended their months-long contract dispute with TV bosses, after signing two-year deals to remain on the show.
The pair reportedly jeopardised their return to the hit series by demanding more money from network bosses.
Hargitay and Meloni allegedly asked for a share of the programme's profits from the NBC network, in addition to the $350,000 (£233,335) they earned per episode - a rare deal similar to ones TV bosses cut with Law & Order: Criminal Intent stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Chris Noth.
Reports last April suggested executives had threatened to dump the pair when their contracts expire in May if an agreement could not be reached - but they have now agreed a new two-year deal.
Law & Order: SVU marks its eleventh year on air in September. »

It was not your typical week in the Nielsen ratings for last week -- not by an NBA long shot. ABC's coverage of the first two games of the NBA Finals between the Orlando Magic and the Los Angeles Lakers captured the first two spots on the ratings list, with Game 1 attracting 14.06 million viewers and Game 2 attracting 13.04 million. (In a ratings anomaly, Game 2 actually came out on top.) It was also a good week for NBC, which rarely places any program at all in the top ten, and often not even in the top 20. This week, however, it wound up with four shows on the select list, with the season finale of Law and Order: SVU placing third with 11.6 million viewers and its original Law and Order coming in at No. 7. A two-part NBC News special, "Inside the Obama White House," tied for eighth on the list. (Both documentary specials were rebroadcast on Friday and produced the highest ratings of the night.)
The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. NBA Finals - Game 2, ABC, 8.2/14; 2. NBA Finals - Game 1, ABC, 7.8/14; 3. Law and Order: SVU, NBC, 7.7/13; 4. NCIS, CBS, 7.4/13; 5. The Mentalist, CBS, 7/11; 6. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 6.3/10; 7. Law and Order, NBC, 6/11; 8. Inside the Obama White House - Pt. 1, NBC, 6/10; 8. (Tie) Inside the Obama White House - Pt. 2, NBC, 6/10; 10. 60 Minutes, CBS, 5.9/12. »

It was the worst week ever during a regular season for NBC last week as its programs averaged just 4.4 million viewers in primetime, according to Nielsen Research. Indeed, as the Associated Press pointed out, no network has ever drawn so few viewers outside the "summer doldrums" of June, July, August and early September. NBC registered fewer viewers in August 2007, but it is likely that it had previously never drawn such a small audience since the early days of television, AP observed. NBC did face heavy competition from the likes of Fox's season-finale episodes of American Idol and ABC's Dancing With the Stars. But there was little to account for the network's tumble on other nights. It's Friday-night Howie Do It drew just 2.3 million viewers, and even its highly touted 30 Rock could attract no more than 2.8 million. Its highest-rated show was the aging Law & Order: SVU, which came in at No. 23 on the Nielsen list with 6.9 million viewers. By contrast, NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams averaged 7.4 million viewers for the week -- more than watched any NBC primetime show. For the week, Fox topped the list (thanks primarily to American Idol) with an average 5.9 rating and an 11 share. CBS placed second with a 5.7/10. ABC followed with a 4.7/8, while NBC trailed with a 3.0/5.
The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 16.1/27; 2. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 13.5/22; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 12.6/20; 4. Dancing With The Stars (Monday), ABC, 12.2/20; 5. The Mentalist, CBS, 10.4/16; 6. NCIS, CBS, 10.3/17; 7. Two and a Half Men, CBS, 9.9/15; 8. CSI: Miami, CBS, 8.9/15; 9. Criminal Minds, CBS, 8.7/14; 10. Rules of Engagement, CBS, 7.9/12. »

Actress Mariska Hargitay blames a decade of demanding stunt work on Law & Order: SVU for her ongoing health problems.
The 45-year-old was hospitalised in January with a partially collapsed lung after she was injured during a sledge-riding accident.
Hargitay bounced back and returned to the hit show, in which she plays Detective Olivia Benson, just two weeks later - but was rushed to hospital from the set suffering from chest pains in March.
And the star, who insists on doing all her own action scenes in the cop series, is convinced her breathing problems are down to a fall she suffered during filming.
She tells People.com, "I've been doing my own stunts on the show for 10 years. I fell wrong, basically. I collapsed my lung doing a stunt."
But Hargitay has reassured her fans she's now regained full health: "I'm 100 per cent. I'm back to my old self." »

Not only did Jay Leno acknowledge that he'll be up against killer shows when he debuts with his nightly variety hour in the fall, but he predicted that people, weary of all the murders in the 10:00 p.m. hour will gravitate towards his show to escape all the crime dramas on the other networks. In a lengthy video promo prepared for a screening at NBC's upfront presentations in New York Monday (and now posted online), Leno assures his viewers that while his competitors are up to committing more mayhem, he'll be up to the same schtick he has been crafting on the Tonight show for 17 years. After showing the Leno video, NBC sales chief Mike Pilot went on to assure advertisers that Leno is "advertiser friendly" and that "he's not afraid to experiment with live commercials." The network also announced that returning shows next season will include: Heroes, Law & Order: SVU, Parks & Recreation, Southland, 30 Rock, The Office, The Biggest Loser, Friday Night Lights and a series of half-hour "Weekend Updates" from Saturday Night Live. Among new shows, NBC unveiled Parenthood, based on the 1989 Ron Howard movie, Jerry Seinfeld's The Marriage Ref, hospital dramas Mercy and Trauma, and Community, starring Joel McHale and Chevy Chase. Conspicuous by their omission from the line-up were Medium, Chuck, My Name Is Earl, and Law and Order. Any one of those shows could receive a reprieve, network executives said Monday, when the complete lineup is announced on May 19. The network indicated that it would like to have input from advertisers about shows that are "on the bubble." »

March Madness has not made its big move in the ratings yet -- although an overrun of Sunday's NCAA Basketball Tournament game helped push CBS's 60 Minutes, which followed it (with an interview with President Obama), into fourth place for the week, behind two episodes of Fox's American Idol and the performance episode of Dancing With the Stars. Otherwise the list of the top-ten remained largely unchanged, with CBS taking five positions, Fox taking two, and ABC, three. NBC's highest-rated show was Law & Order: SVU, which came in at No. 22. Overall, CBS won the week with an average 7.1 rating and a 12 share. Fox placed second with a 6.0/10, edging out ABC with a 5.9/10. NBC remained far behind with an average 3.7/6.
The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 13.7/21; 2. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 12.3/19; 3. Dancing With the Stars, ABC, 13.3/20; 4. 60 Minutes, CBS, 10.4/17; 5. NCIS, CBS, 9.8/16; 6. The Mentalist, CBS, 9.8/15; 7. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 9.2/14; 8. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 9.8/15; 9. President Obama plans a formal address to the nation tonight (Tuesday) concerning his economic recovery program, prompting a second major programming readjustment by the TV networks during the current sweeps month. Fox, for example, is moving tonight's scheduled performance episode of American Idol to Wednesday and Wednesday's results episode to Thursday. The move will alter the complexion of Thursday's lineup, which this week includes CBS's coverage of the NCAA finals. NBC is planning to move tonight's two-hour episode of The Biggest Loser to 9:00 p.m. and preempt Law & Order: SVU. CBS is moving NCIS and The Mentalist one hour ahead and dropping Without a Trace. ABC plans to drop its Dancing With the Stars tonight. »

Actress Mariska Hargitay has returned to the set of TV drama Law & Order: SVU after taking a three-week break to recover from a partially collapsed lung.
Tabloid reports suggested Hargitay's health crisis will keep her off the set of the hit show, with sources claiming producers "have written her out of the rest of the season".
The 44-year-old was back at work on Monday just days after promising she would return to film the final four episodes of the hit cop show's latest season.

Actress Isabel Gillies' memoirs began as a series of simple emails sent out from her mobile phone.
The Law & Order: Special Victims Unit star describes the breakdown of her marriage to DeSales Harrison in brutally honest fashion in her new book, Happens Every Day: An All-Too-True Story.
Gillies' six-year union came to an end in 2005 after she discovered her husband had been cheating on her with a young teacher.
And the 39 year old, who shares two sons with Harrison, reveals the inspiration to write a book on her lessons in love came about from her hastily-typed emails and messages on her BlackBerry smart phone.
In the opening pages of the book, she says, "I am not a writer but I have been told I write good emails which has led me to sit here at the library and tell this story."
Gillies is now married to second husband Peter Lattman, whom she wed in 2007. »

The same players that dominated the top of the Nielsen ratings list the previous week did so again last week, with Fox's American Idol taking the top two positions; ABC's Dancing With the Stars, the third; and CBS's CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, the fourth. It's a lineup that is almost certain to remain unchanged for the next several weeks. NBC, which has been absent from the top 20 with scripted fare for most of the season, finally returned to the list, coming in at No. 20 with Law & Order: SVU. But George Clooney's cameo on E.R., while putting the show above its average ratings for the season, placed 22nd on the list. And the pilot episode of NBC's Kings (it's not clear whether the network intends to run it as a full-fledged series or a miniseries) landed at No. 53 on the Nielsen list, despite a huge budget and a time slot on one of the most-watched nights of the week. (It averaged 6.04 million viewers, while a 60 Minutes interview with Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke earlier in the evening drew 12.6 million and an episode of ABC's Desperate Housewives, opposite Kings, registered 14.4 million.)
The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research: 1. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 14.6/23; 2. American Idol (Wednesday), Fox, 14.6/22; 3. Dancing With the Stars, ABC, 14.1/21; 4. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 10.3/16; 5. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 9.1/14; 6. Criminal Minds, CBS, 8.9/14; 7. The Mentalist, CBS, 9/14; 8. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9/15; 9. Actress Mariska Hargitay has been forced to quit the current season of Law & Order: SVU after suffering a collapsed lung.
The Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner, who has played Detective Olivia Benson on the cop series for the past decade, will not be returning for the rest of season 10, according to a show insider.
Hargitay suffered a collapsed lung in January and tried to work through the pain, but she was admitted to hospital in February, and underwent surgery last week (ends13Mar09).

So that Conan O'Brien won't have to follow reruns when he takes over the Tonight show in June, NBC is planning to extend the current season through his debut week, Daily Variety reported today (Friday). Medium, it said, will now air its season finale on Monday, June 1, followed by Law and Order: Svu on Tuesday and Law and Order on Wednesday. "We'll give Conan the best launch possible during his premiere week," NBC Entertainment Co-chairman Ben Silverman told the trade publication. The network also announced a series of additional moves that it hopes will help reclaim lost ground during the summer, including a number of original scripted dramas and even two two-part movies, something rare for a broadcast network even during the regular season these days. (Meteor is scheduled to air on Sunday, June 7 and 14 and The Storm, on Sunday, July 19 and 26.) »
