Sherlock Holmes Review

21 December 2009 8:12 AM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

We all know what happened the last time Guy Ritchie decided to stray from his comfort zone. The result was Swept Away and the least said about that cinematic travesty, the better. It’s plainly obvious that Ritchie isn’t to everybody’s taste either. Regarded by many as a Mockney with a big ego, he seems to anger as many critics as those who embrace him.

I quite liked Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and really enjoyed Snatch. Rock N’ Rolla was a blast to watch, too. I don’t think Guy Ritchie is the saviour of the British film industry but Swept Away and Revolver aside; he has made three films that are hugely entertaining if you don’t take them too seriously.

Sherlock Holmes isn’t a complete departure for Ritchie; it’s still set in London, has its fair share of fight scenes and is laced with dark humour. …

U.K. Officials Place Restrictions On Ritchie's Pub

17 December 2009 2:06 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Guy Ritchie has been ordered to reign in rowdy patrons flocking to his famed London pub - after neighbours challenged the British filmmaker's licence at a local council meeting.

The Snatch director bought the The Punch Bowl in the city's posh Mayfair neighbourhood in early 2008 and transformed the traditional bar into a celebrity hotspot.

But not everyone likes the star-studded hang-out.

Local residents have demanded City of Westminster Council officials either revoke or change the pub's license, arguing the place attracts large crowds of noisy customers, who spill out into the street and leave behind broken glass and trash.

Council bosses have ordered Ritchie and his co-proprietors to keep patrons indoors after 8pm and to scale down their private parties.

Employees have also been told to make hourly checks outside the pub for glasses and litter. …

'Sherlock Holmes' Director Guy Ritchie On Speaking To Brad Pitt: 'I'm Not Allowed To Say Anything!'

16 December 2009 11:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Several months ago, a rumor surfaced that international superstar Brad Pitt had flown to London to shoot a few scenes as the villainous Moriarty for director Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes." The rumor was squashed, only to reignite in the form of the word that Pitt had discussed playing Moriarty in a possible sequel with the film's producers. This too was put to rest but you know how hope is, always springing eternal.

So when MTV's Josh Horowitz sat down with Ritchie to talk "Holmes," the Pitt talk inevitably came up. And here's what the director had to say...

"I'm looking over there," he said, breaking into a wide grin as he glanced nervously at his publicist. Making a wagging finger motion, Ritchie laughed and exclaimed "I'm not allowed to say anything!"

Whether or not the director is looking to Pitt for a possible "Holmes" sequel, he has nothing but respect for Pitt, …

Watch Guy Ritchie Direct Sherlock Holmes

15 December 2009 12:58 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When I think of a Guy Ritchie set, I imagine a bunch of soccer hooligans standing around shouting .fuck you. at the actors. But it seems he doesn.t actually live perpetually in the world of Snatch. Instead Ritchie wears a suit and stands behind a camera in a fairly low-key, intimate environment offering advice while his actors pull off crazy fight scenes and a variety of strange stunts. Warners has released a ton of behind the scenes footage from the Sherlock Holmes set in which you can get a better look at just how Guy Ritchie, Robert Downey Jr., and Jude Law made Sherlock Holmes happen. Unlike the holiday season.s other big blockbuster, Avatar, they actually have real sets. Take a look in the five clips below: <!-- …

8 New Sherlock Holmes Clips

15 December 2009 7:44 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Christmas Day this year brings us the highly-anticipated Sherlock Holmes, Guy Ritchie’s new take on the classic detective character. We recently got a big look at the film with a huge high-res image gallery, and generally we have been getting steadily hit with trailers, posters and other images for the movie since Fall season began. As far as I’m concerned, everything’s looked great so far.

8 clips from Sherlock Holmes have been released by Warner Bros., and thanks to the guys over at Collider, we have all of them back-to-back in the one player for extra convenience. I personally don’t want to watch them all, as I don’t want to see too much in fear it may lessen the impact and enjoyment of the movie itself (which is just less than a couple of weeks away from being released).

However, if you’re keen, check out …

Downey Jr. Intimidated By Pitt In Ritchie Role

15 December 2009 4:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Robert Downey Jr. was terrified about stepping into Sherlock Holmes' shoes for Guy Ritchie's new movie - because he was convinced he could never top Brad Pitt's performance in the director's Snatch film.

The Iron Man actor steps back into Victorian London to play the supersleuth in Ritchie's new adaptation, but he had doubts over whether he was "cool" enough to be one of the filmmaker's leading men.

He explains, "It's was a little bit daunting. You know the type of guys that have been in Ritchie's movies and you feel like they're this kind of tight-knit little band. And I remember seeing Brad Pitt in Snatch, and thinking that was so cool and it was so bad a**. And I thought, 'I'm never gonna measure up.'"

But Downey Jr. insists Ritchie didn't question his casting decision and instead focused on getting the job done.

He adds, "The truth is, Guy doesn't think that way. He kind of approaches everything like (it's important to) have a good atmosphere on set. (He says,) 'What we have is this huge iconic literary character and we're looking at storyboards for fight sequences that seem to have no end, and 75 days to do it and this is how we're going to do it.'" …

Sherlock Holmes | Film review

Cinematic mystery that baffles in all the wrong ways

What a mysterious puzzle Guy Ritchie's new film presents. This time last year, he looked like a man in need of a miracle. The one-time saviour of British cinema's movie, the damp gangster squib RocknRolla, took under $6m in the Us. Yet here he is, launching what looks like his very own period action superhero franchise. And he's been handed a rumoured $80m to blow on it.

But Sherlock Holmes is high-end hack work. It could have been made by anyone. There's the odd Ritchie-ism, like crunchy slo-mo in the fight scenes, but he was, presumably, brought on board for reasons not wholly to do with his cinematic style.

Good news for those Holmes purists appalled by the prospect of literature's most cerebral sleuth getting a geezer makeover, but bad news for the rest of us: Sherlock Holmes isn't even a magnificent mistake. …

This decade’s film: 2000-2004

14 December 2009 8:08 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Pottermania, Tolkein-mania, Twilight-mania…it’s fair to say that the noughties have been a strong one for different kinds of mania. Moreover, it’s also been the time for some pretty awesome movies. 2000 marked a particularly promising start: American Beauty, the directorial debut from Sam Mendes was a unique critique on the American dream that attracted widespread acclaim, being nominated for 8 Academy Awards and winning 5; including Best Picture. His next project, Road to Perdition proved this success to be no fluke. Apparently this was a good time for new directors, as further evidenced by Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, and Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich. Not that the decade was limited to low-budget concept flicks. Box office-smashing comic book adaptations became the name of the game; ranging from the great (Spider-Man, X-Men and Hellboy), to the not so much (Daredevil and Fantastic Four). It became (almost) socially acceptable …

Brad Pitt In A 'Sherlock Holmes' Sequel? Guy Ritchie, Cast Weigh In

'Maybe Moriarty will surface...' director Guy Ritchie teases of Pitt's potential character.

Brad Pitt and Robert Downey Jr. going head-to-head onscreen. That's a tantalizing cinematic throwdown, which explains why even the possibility of such a face-off — in a sequel to a film that has not even opened yet — has been churning through the rumor mill. If Downey's "Sherlock Holmes" becomes a box-office hit following its Christmas Day opening, could we eventually see the actor's Holmes joined in a sequel by Brad Pitt as the wily detective's nemesis James Moriarty?

That's been the gossip for months. In August there were rumors that Pitt was on the "Holmes" set, and The Hollywood Reporter dished in September that the A-lister was in discussions to take on the role. And now we know — spoiler alert! — that Moriarty does in fact pop up in "Holmes, …

Monthly Movie Preview – December 2009

3 December 2009 1:53 PM, PST | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

This is going to be a great month. No matter whether these big and small movies fall flat on their faces or not there’s going to be plenty to choose from – especially for those who want to keep up with important films.

First up is Avatar, one of the biggest gambles of this decade. Will the same kind of crowd that saw The Dark Knight or Transformers multiple times venture to movie theatres to see a 150-minute-long 3-D film that features tall blue creatures? It’s up in the air.

Which reminds me of a few more titles that should be worth checking out, one of them being Jason Reitman’s new film with George Clooney. The drama-comedy about a man who fires people for a living has been getting great buzz from its successful festival runs, with Oscar talk flying around as smoothly as paper airplanes.

But, Up In the Air

Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels Blu-ray Review

2 December 2009 8:01 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

We’re ten years on in Guy Ritchie’s career, and from all evidence he’s about to turn the corner into pure commercial filmmaking. For most people there’s only one answer to what derailed him, and that is: Madonna. The pre-Madonna years featured Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, and Snatch, the Madonna years featured Swept Away and Revolver, and the post-Madonna’s are now Rocknrolla and Sherlock Holmes, which should be one of the big pictures of 2009. My review of Guy’s Ritchie’s first film after this jump.

Lock, Stock is one of the numerous 90’s crime films to come in the wake of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. It’s a genre that burnt itself out rapidly, with only people like Bryan Singer and Christopher McQuarrie proving themselves above the fray. The majority of the genre was overheated pabulum like Things to Do

'Terminator Salvation' Blows Up The World, Ben Stiller Spends The Night And More, In The DVD Report For Dec. 1

1 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Let's get this out of the way right off to bat: I enjoyed "Terminator Salvation." I know I'm sitting in a somewhat lonely circle, but what can I say? I'm a sucker for big, loud robots, cyborgs, whatever you want to call them, and "Salvation" has some jaw-droppingly cool scenes. The film is now hitting store shelves, and leads the DVD Report for Tuesday, December 1.

The studio was taking a gamble when it greenlit a fourth film in the venerable "Terminator" franchise. After a lackluster response to 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," many fans advocated for putting the series to bed, either to breathe or permanently. But away we went with director McG at the helm, and Christian Bale and Anton Yelchin -- two figures with legitimate geek cred -- attached to the budding sequel. The resulting story saw a band of resistance fighters battling to save humanity from the ever-evolving SkyNet. …
