Why Jeanne Moreau’s Death Represents the Decline of French Film in America

  • Indiewire
Iconic actress Jeanne Moreau’s death this week at 89 received muted American coverage, with remembrances that hardly captured Moreau’s essential presence and influence in world cinema. Overshadowed by the passing of Sam Shepard the day before (more contemporary, American, prominent in multiple fields, and younger), she received back-page obituaries in major papers. Her lack of any Oscar nominations, or a deserved honorary award, didn’t help the cause.

Even more unfortunate is the treatment of her death reflects American audiences’ ever-increasing disinterest in French-language film. Jeanne Moreau is significant for her transcendent artistry and the directors with whom she worked, but she also represented the iconic qualities of her country’s cinema.

Though the boom in “art houses” (a term popularized in the late 1940s) came more from Italian films (“Rome, Open City,” “Shoe Shine,” and particularly “Bicycle Thief”), French film became a steady part of the subtitled market by the mid-1950s.

Jennifer Lopez to Topline and Produce Rom-Com “Second Act”

Jennifer Lopez in “The Boy Next Door”: Universal Pictures

Jennifer Lopez is returning to romantic comedies. The “Shades of Blue” actress and multi-hyphenate has signed on to star in and produce STXfilms’ “Second Act,” a rom-com about a woman over 40 beginning a new career. This news, reported by Variety, means Lopez may have another title to add to her list of much-loved films like “The Wedding Planner” and “Maid in Manhattan.”

Second Act” will see Lopez playing “a big box store employee who reinvents her life and her lifestyle, which gets her the chance to prove to Madison Avenue that street smarts are as valuable as a college degree,” Variety summarizes.

The rom-com was penned by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas — a producer on several of Lopez’s projects like “The Boy Next Door,” “Shades of Blue,” and a couple Lopez concert docs — and Justin Zackham (“The Bucket List”). Peter Segal (“Shameless,” “50 First Dates”) will helm the project. Goldsmith-Thomas, Zackham, and Benny Medina will produce alongside Lopez.

“There are so many things I love about this project and script,” Lopez commented. “People try to put women to sleep at a certain age. ‘Second Act’ is a story that empowers the every woman to do more, to be more, and not limit their dreams. I am thrilled to partner with Stx as they continue to create and empower the female audience.”

Second Act” is part of Stx’s push for more female-led content. The Jessica Chastain-led “Molly’s Game,” about Olympic hopeful turned high-stakes poker game player Molly Bloom, “Bad Moms” sequel “A Bad Moms Christmas,” and R-rated puppet comedy “The Happytime Murders” starring Melissa McCarthy are among the company’s slated women-centric projects.

You can catch Lopez next in NBC’s 2018 musical event “Bye Bye Bird Live!” She’ll also topline and exec produce the HBO film “Cocaine Godmother,” about the famed criminal Griselda Blanco. Lopez is also a series regular on NBC’s “Shades of Blue.” The third season of the police procedural will air Sundays beginning in 2018.

Lopez earned a Golden Globe nod in 1998 for her portrayal of Tejano music star Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in “Selena.” “It was a meaty role, but it was few and far between, especially for Latinos to have a role like that,” Lopez has said about the film. “I think it’s still challenging for women, especially being Latina. Thinking about ‘Selena’ 20 years ago and to have a role like that, I was very lucky. I was very fortunate. But it’s still a struggle for women.”

Jennifer Lopez to Topline and Produce Rom-Com “Second Act” was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

Jennifer Lopez will star in and produce the romantic comedy “Second Act” for STXfilms as part of the company’s efforts to focus on female-driven movies.

STXfilms touted the movie as being in the vein of “Working Girl” and “Maid in Manhattan.” Lopez will portray a big box store employee who reinvents her life and her lifestyle, which gets her the chance to prove to Madison Avenue that street smarts are as valuable as a college degree.

“There are so many things I love about this project and script,” said Lopez. “People try to put women to sleep at a certain age. ‘Second Act’ is a story that empowers the every woman to do more, to be more, and not limit their dreams. Jennifer Lopez’s NBC Series ‘World of Dance’ Marks Game-Changing Moment for Dance Industry

Veteran comedy director Peter Segal will direct the film. His credits include “50 First Dates,” “Anger Management,” and “Get Smart.”

The project was developed by Stx with Lopez from an idea conceived by Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Justin Zackham. The two wrote the script for “Second Act,” which will be produced by Lopez, Goldsmith-Thomas, Zackham and Benny Medina.

Adam Fogelson, Chairman of STXfilms, and the studio’s president of production Sam Brown made the announcement Thursday.

“When Jennifer, Elaine and Justin came to us with this idea, we loved it right away,” said Fogelson. “The premise of reinventing yourself and creating a career and life-defining second act is hugely relatable and aspirational. Jennifer’s talents as a film and television actress, producer and recording artist are legendary. She is a true global superstar and and we think she is perfect for this role.”

Lopez starred in several successful romantic comedies and dramas between 2001 and 2005, including “The Wedding Planner,” “Maid in Manhattan,” “Shall We Dance,” and “Monster in Law.” Other key credits include “Out of Sight,” “The Cell,” and “Anaconda.” She starred opposite Ryan Guzman in 2015’s erotic thriller “The Boy Next Door.”

Stx noted in the announcement that its next six releases feature women in leading roles — “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” “Molly’s Game,” “Gringo,” “A Bad Moms Christmas” and “The Happytime Murders.”

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and the Legacy of Joss Whedon 20 Years Later

‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and the Legacy of Joss Whedon 20 Years Later
“Well, there's nobody who didn't have a horrible high school experience except for, like, one guy I met once,” Joss Whedon said while sitting down with Et on the set of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in 1997.

At the time, the show was in production on its second season, with everyone -- including stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy), David Boreanaz (Angel) and Alyson Hannigan (Willow) -- returning to work on a bona fide hit for The WB. Whedon summed up his own high school experience as “constant humiliation and rejection,” an apt time period for a TV horror series. (Note: This was probably before they ever met, but I still like to believe the “one guy” he was referring to is Nathan Fillion.)

“I thought it would make a good show,” Whedon said. “I thought, I'll make a show about high school that's a horror movie just as my high school was, and that's

Troian Bellisario Lets ‘Visionary’ Fiancé Patrick J. Adams Call the Wedding Planning Shots

Troian Bellisario Lets ‘Visionary’ Fiancé Patrick J. Adams Call the Wedding Planning Shots
It seems that Patrick J. Adams has seen The Wedding Planner one too many times.

The Suits star’s fiancé, Pretty Little Liars actress Troian Bellisario, told People from a fan event at the new Disney Springs Orlando Origins store on Wednesday that Adams has taken the reins when it comes to crafting their nuptials.

“I’m very, very fortunate to be marrying a director,” said Bellisario, 31. “I am terrible at planning things. He is a total visionary, so I really trust him on a lot of the aesthetic things.”

Bellisario and Adams, 35, were engaged in 2014 after three years of dating.

To be perfectly honest, I’ve lost track of the number of times Damon and Bonnie have tried to kill each other on this show. But it also never gets old, because — as Sybil so astutely discovered — they’ve got a crap load of history between them. Perhaps even some unresolved feelings?

Bonnie insists that’s not the case, but it was

What’s not to love about Matthew McConaughey? In addition to proving to be an immensely talented actor, he seems like the most chill guy in the business. He’s been a fan favourite for over two decades now, making us laugh, cry, and adopt the slogan “Alright, alright, alright” into everyday conversations.

Today is his 47th birthday, and so there's no better time to look at some of our favourite of his performances. Not to mention that we'll be seeing him again twice over this Christmas, as a koala hosting a singing competition in the animated Sing, and as a man in search for gold in, you guessed it, Gold.

Gold is likely yet another entry in McConaughey’s list of recent films that typically go on to become critical and awards darlings (see Mud, Dallas Buyer’s Club,

Match the withering review to the movie – quiz

This week saw critics pan the latest Dan Brown thriller, Inferno, the Guardian included. Can you match the following scathing critiques to the one-star films that received them?

”Napalms the screen with waves of pornographic consumerist vulgarity…dredged directly from Tinseltown’s festering scrotum.”

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

Terminator Genisys

"Could be one of those rare and terrifying serial killer cases where the psychotic culprit apparently intends to bore and embarrass everyone to death with bad acting."

Newswire: Enchanted sequel wakes from its slumber, finds new director

2007’s Enchanted was a critical and box-office hit, so it’s surprising that additional chapters in the fairy tale haven’t been churned out, especially since “happily ever after” isn’t a hard and fast rule anymore. And yet, nearly 10 years have passed since Amy Adams chirped her way into Patrick Dempsey’s and our hearts. A sequel was announced back in 2014, which was to be written by The SmurfsJ. David Stem and David N. Weiss, though it’s languished in pre-production.

But now it looks like someone’s said the magic words to reinvigorate the project, as Empire Magazine reports that Rock Of Ages director Adam Shankman will helm the Enchanted follow-up. Shankman’s filmography includes 2007’s Hairspray, as well as such contemporary fairy tales as The Wedding Planner (there’s a coveted shoe involved in their meet-cute), Bringing Down The House (in which ...

‘Enchanted’ sequel ‘Disenchanted’ finds a director, eyes summer 2017 production start

  • Hitfix
It looks like Disney will indeed give us another movie poking fun at itself all the while celebrating its animated films à la the sly parody of The Princess Bride. Things are finally moving forward on the sequel to 2007’s Enchanted. Adam Shankman is in negotiations to direct the sequel, called Disenchanted, and Amy Adams is expected to return, The Hollywood Reporter posted today. Disney hopes to start production in summer 2017. I’m disappointed to see Anne Fletcher and her comedy chops apparently off the project (Fletcher, who helmed Ryan Reynolds/Sandra Bullock rom-com The Proposal, was previously attached to direct the Enchanted sequel when it was in development back in 2010). But if Shankman delivers a movie that’s as fun and packed with dazzling musical numbers as his Hairspray, then we should be in for a solid sequel. His other credits include the Rock of Ages movie, A Walk to Remember,
