Toronto 2009: The Feminine Mystique

22 September 2009 8:42 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

It seemed appropriate that "The Young Victoria" closed out Toronto this year, considering that the festival turned out to be a coronation for women in film, in addition to being a celebration its host metropolis (a series of pre-screening clips from Toronto-based films honored the city's 175th anniversary). Besides showcasing upcoming femme-centric fall releases as "Bright Star," "An Education," "Whip It!" and "Fish Tank," the festival ended up bestowing audience awards upon the coming-of-age drama "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire" and the doc "The Topp Twins," which focuses on a pair of lesbian sisters and musicians who have been entertaining New Zealand for the past three decades. (A full list of winners can be found here.)

The best and the worst thing that can be said about "The Young Victoria" is that it left me wanting more. During a brisk 96 minutes, we witness the rise of Queen Victoria

Tiff 09 Coverage Concludes: Whip It, Mother and Child, Up in the Air

21 September 2009 8:16 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Here's his last few capsules and rankings 1. A Serious Man A+ (previous post)

2. Precious A (previous post)

3. Up in the Air A

The recipient of the most ejaculatory pre festival hype, I think Jason Reitman’s film’s low-key aspirations, and the small-scale story it tells, will perhaps not benefit from being oversold by everyone and their mother (most random Torontonians I waited on line with over the course of the week told me they thought it was “very good, not great”). So, while adding to the hype is to the movie’s detriment, I have to report that I completely swooned for the movie. I can already see the backlash coming, as the movie …

Tiff Review: Mother and Child

21 September 2009 7:48 AM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In his decade in the storytelling business, Rodrigo García has made a name for himself not only as a notable television director (Carnivale, Six Feet Under, and In Treatment), but also as a filmmaker intensely interested in the lives of women and the intricacies of smaller, often interconnected story lines. It started with Things You Can Tell Just By Looking at Her and Ten Tiny Love Stories, but García really made his mark with 2005's Nine Lives. When he followed it up with the television movie Fathers and Sons, it was inevitable that he would one day take that same theme and apply it to the female characterizations he loves so much. It wouldn't be in the form of Mothers & Daughters, as Carl Bessai* brought that very film to Tiff in 2008. But with a slightly different title, Mother and Child, García jumps leaps and bounds beyond Bessai's take and has …
