Growing Up On ‘Dragonball’

27 July 2009 2:49 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Before Dragonball was a movie, it was a Japanese manga comic book created by Akira Toriyama, which later became an anime cartoon series. I was too young to read the manga in the 80’s but I first became aware of the anime around 1989, when a Dragonball Tv movie premiered on my local TV station.

My brother and I instantly shoved a tape in our Vcr, trying to preserve this new awesomeness we were seeing. As fate would have it, that tape ran out just before the climatic final battle at a Martial Arts Tournament, and Dragonball was lost to us until the series’ next installment, Dragon Ball Z, premiered on American TV in the late 90s. Fate had given me a second chance and I snatched it up.

Most of my college years (1999-2003) involved hard-partying peppered with some light studying - but in all the chaos I carved a »

Dragon Ball Z: Broly Triple Feature (DVD + Blu-ray)

19 April 2009 7:11 PM, PDT | BuzzFocus.com | See recent BuzzFocus.com news »

Every five years, it feels like the Dragon Ball Z saga finds a way of coming back into the public eye to prove once again why it is one of the top-animated action series of all time. Recently, Funimation began the process of restoring all the original Dragon Ball Z movies uncut for DVD and Blu-Ray release. Anyone who watched Dbz back on the Cartoon Network knows what this means. The cartoon had been severely cut from its Japanese roots and great moments like Trunks peeing on Broly’s head were lost to newcomers to Dragon Ball Z fan base. Funimation used da Vinci machines to ensure that all the vibrant colors were true to the original prints when converted to HD. The latest Dbz release from Funimation is a compilation of all three Broly feature-length movies: Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly: Second Coming, and Bio Broly. Broly: The »

On Anime: An If/Then Guide to What You Should Be Watching

3 April 2009 11:33 AM, PDT | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Neophytes tend to have the same reaction when they're about to be introduced to anime or manga: "Is this the tentacle stuff?" It's amazing how a niche subgenre you'll likely never run across unless you're actively seeking it out in the deepest bowels of the Internet has become so notorious. The majority of anime out there exists in the form of TV series that -- despite a preponderance of over-endowed ass-kicking ninja women -- are far from a lewd free-for-all.

Whether you're settling down with animation of the Japanese persuasion for the first time, or just looking to get a little deeper than the tried-and-true classic titles that populate the average chain video rental store shelves, the sheer amount of titles now available is daunting. Asking a hardcore fan for help can be akin to looking to "The Simpsons"' Comic Book Guy for gentle insight, and current trends in »

Justin Chatwin Talks Dragonball Sequels

30 March 2009 4:30 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

IGN spoke to "Dragonball Evolution" stars Justin Chatwin (Goku) and James Marsters (Lord Piccolo) about the future of the "Dragonball" franchise. "I hope [the movie does well] because my character only really gets interesting in the second film," said Marsters. "I mean he's interesting now, but his journey is really developed in the script for the second movie." He continued: "All I know is I've been signed to three movies, but I would like to make five - seven of them. You could just pretty much paint by numbers using the wealth of source material to easily get the seven films. There's that much there." Meanwhile Chatwin is also obviously thinking about "Dragonball" as a series of movies, with the actor seeing "Evolution" as an introduction piece to the wider universe. "There's a whole generation of kids waiting to be introduced to 'Dragonball,'" said Chatwin. "So this first movie is really important for that. »

'Dragonball Evolution' Release Delayed Two Days

26 March 2009 10:58 PM, PDT | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

The 20th Century Fox have adjusted the U.S. release date of their upcoming "Dragonball Evolution" yet again. After moving it to the April 8 slate late last year, the studio decided to put it back on the Friday release schedule on April 10. With the new date, the live-action adaptation will be in competition with "Hannah Montana: The Movie" and "Observe and Report".

Putting the schedule change aside, IGN has just got the chance to interview James Marsters. In the chat, the actor who played Lord Piccolo talked about the differences of this feature film character from the one in "Dragon Ball Z". "This character is nothing like you're going to recognize from Dragon Ball Z because this is a story that happens before Dragon Ball Z. In the actual source material that we were adapting, we were only dealing with Dragon Ball," he began explaining.

"In Dragon Ball, Lord Piccolo is a very old, »
