Buzz Break: No Catchphrase Necessary

16 October 2009 1:45 PM, PDT | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

· The Simpsons is holding a contest where a viewer-submitted character can appear in an upcoming episode opposite Chris Martin of Coldplay. Coincidentally, this is how Seth MacFarlane developed Family Guy.

· Amber Heard and Leighton Meester are teaming up for Cowgirl Bandits, which is being described as a young Thelma and Louise. I imagine they'll have to pick up young Brad Pitt at the local junior high.

· Nicolas Cage is suing his business manager for "catastrophic losses," and seeking $20 million in reparations.

· Did your jaw drop and your eyes bug out (accompanied by an "Awoooga" train whistle) while viewing the possibly-Photoshopped GQ cover of a busty January Jones? Well, assures GQ, "They're real and they're spectacular."

· The new Celebrity Apprentice will feature Cyndi Lauper, Bret Michaels, Sharon Osbourne, and Rod Blagojevich. All of them trash, dahling. Trash! …

Betty Draper Loves White Fang

21 July 2009 5:40 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

I've been on a Mad Men bender. Nine episodes in the past three days. This decision was spurred on by a hugely thoughtful gift from a friend (1st and 2nd season) and the abundant Emmy nominations last week. Just as I began to watch Season 1 in marathon form -- I'd only seen some of it not being a regular until season 2 -- the publicity blitz for Season 3 (coming in August) started hitting.

This Interview interview with January Jones (aka "Betty Draper") is so cute.

Who knew that that Ethan Hawke wolfdog movie White Fang (1991) was that inspiring to little children? It made little January want to be an actor. Jones is so sneaky/fantastic as Betty Draper (she's almost too good in the role for you to notice how much she's doing... initially) that I must now thank the makers of White Fang for contributing to the wonder that is Mad Men. …

Seann William Scott And Adam Brody Join Kevin Smith’s ‘A Couple Of Dicks’

28 May 2009 12:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

If you had called Seann William Scott and Adam Brody a couple of d—s a few days ago, it would’ve been a mere matter of harsh opinion. Today, it is a matter of fact.

The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop that the “Role Models” actor and the former “The O.C.” star have both signed on for Kevin Smith’s latest project, “A Couple of Dicks.” The film, which begins shooting on Monday, is a buddy cop action-comedy starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan as two detectives trying to track down a valuable stolen baseball card. From the sound of it, Scott and Brody’s roles are directly linked to the film’s central plot.

According to THR, Scott will play the filthily named S–t Bandit — yes, you know what “s–t” stands for — a robber that leaves trademark “souvenirs” at the scenes of his crimes. And by “souvenirs, …

Sixty-Six Adaptation is Next for Director Barry Levinson

1 May 2009 12:06 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Might this finally be the comeback project for Barry Levinson? Since Bandits in 2001, most of the director's films haven't been big hitters, either at the box office or with critics. Levinson is now set to adapt his own novel titled "Sixty-Six" that was first published in 2003. The coming of age story, set in 1966 Baltimore, is about a group of high school buddies trying to cope with grown-up life on the eve of significant historical events like the counterculture movement and the war in Vietnam. Levinson is writing the script and will direct the adaptation. He plans on financing the movie independently will start casting soon. Sixty-Six will complete an informal series in which Levinson examines the social dynamics in Baltimore at various periods throughout the 20th century. He kicked that off with 1983's Diner, set in the Baltimore of 1959, and covered related ground in Avalon (1990), Tin …

Robin & Marian Redux

26 February 2009 9:30 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As you may have heard the 39th film version of Robin Hood is in progress. I might be exaggerating on the number but not by much, the point being that there's another one coming about that man who robs from the rich to give to the poor [I can hear the wingnut editorials now "ack! redistribution of wealth! ack!!!" still unable to see that rich people are also into the redistribution of wealth -- no bid contracts, unfair wages, outsourcing -- so long as it's redistributed to them]. Ridley Scott is directing this version, formerly called Nottingham, which means that Russell Crowe is the star. This will mark their 5th movie together. Maybe they're trying to catch up to Tim Burton & Johnny Depp who are hitting lucky #7 with Alice in Wonderland which will be out in 2010, same year as this Robin Hood.

Every generation gets at least one version of the story of

the honorable thief and his fair maiden

It's also no surprise that Cate Blanchett has signed to co-star as Maid Marian -- offers hit her inbox at the rate spam hits yours. That said she seems like a decent choice. …

What Films Top Your List of Movies that Didn't Receive Any Oscar Nominations?

3 February 2009 2:41 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Scott Feinberg at The Envelope has created a list of his "The top 25 movies of the past 10 years that got no Oscar love" and it's an interesting idea considering there has been so much hatred aimed at the Academy over The Dark Knight not getting a Best Picture nomination, but it did actually receive eight nominations, which is nothing to scoff at. We are talking about films that didn't receive any nominations, zero, zilch, nada. Any come to mind? I had never considered the idea since it is a relatively hard thing to imagine that a favorite film of yours didn't receive any Oscar nominations -- wait, is that why general audiences aren't interested in the Oscars? -- but then I went back over my 2003-2008 Top Ten lists and found several that weren't nominated and put together a quick top ten and an example category I think they should have been nominated in. …

Useless Trivia: Christopher Young track titles

27 January 2009 12:59 AM, PST | Daily Film Music Blog | See recent Daily Film Music Blog news »

Why should you buy the soundtracks of Christopher Young? Well, for instance the music is quite good on some of them. And if you want to have more fun with the release, check out the tracklisting. You're bound to find somehing along the lines of "Accelerated Brundle Disease" or "Dancing With a Wet Handkerchief on Your Mother's Grave". But wait, there's more! The CD of Hush for intance contains the following titles: "Hush", "Little Baby", "Don't You Cry", "Mama's Gonna Buy", "You", "A". It's all fun. If you pay close attention, you might also find that several Young releases contain pun homages to famous composers as well. Below I've gathered all I could find, now it's up to you to guess which composers are referenced in the track titles. I might add that some of them are only guesses and I couldn't find references some of Young's biggest works …
