The Others (2001) More at IMDbPro »

The content of this page was created directly by users and has not been screened or verified by IMDb staff.
Since the beliefs that parents want to instill in their children can vary greatly, we ask that instead of adding your personal opinions about what is right or wrong in a film, that you instead use this feature to help parents make informed viewing decisions by describing the facts of relevant scenes in the title for each one of the different categories: Sex and Nudity, Violence and Gore, Profanity, Alcohol/Drugs/Smoking, and Frightening/Intense Scenes.

Sex & Nudity

A brief intimate scene between a woman and her husband (nothing obscene). He kisses her neck, she kisses him, and as soon as he gets on top of her the scene ends. A sensual scene, rather than sexual.

After that scene, we see Grace's bare back from afar.

Violence & Gore

No blood & gore at all.

Though, violence is mentioned (as in, talked). The woman did say she suffocated her children, and then shot herself in the mouth.

A man says he sometimes bleeds.

There is one scene where a woman shoots the ghosts with a shotgun (the bullet just goes through them since they're ghosts).

Profanity

There are some mid usages of "Hell" and "damn". But aside from that, none.

Absolutely none.

This film has a supernatural/horror theme. So, of course there will be intense/frightening scenes. Take a look at this for more details:

Red: Very Scary

Orange: Moderately Scary

Blue: Mildly Scary

We suddenly hear Grace letting out a blood-curdling scream, but then see that she's apparently had a nightmare.

Grace thinks she hears Nicolas and then Anne crying (they're in separate rooms), but after checking on them, she finds that neither was doing so (with Anne saying it was a boy named Victor).

Anne wakes up, rolls over, and then screams as she realizes that all of the curtains are missing (that protect them from the sunlight). The mother comes and covers them, and she finds out all the curtains in the house are taken. This is scene is more intense rather than scary.

Anne wakes up Nicolas to tell him that Victor (an unseen boy) has been opening the curtains. As some music plays, Anne talks to Victor (and we hear his voice as she turns her head away), all of which scares Nicolas. We then see a hand touch his face and hear him scream.

A woman hears a piano playing. When she checks it out, she finds out no one is playing it at all. This scene makes us think the house is haunted.

Grace goes up to the junk room to check whether there are intruders there. She hears whispering voices, and after that a LOUD sound of a moving object.

A woman finds a book called The Book of the Dead which contains photographs of dead people and children, this is more disturbing than it is frightening.

A scary, pale face SLOWLY pops out behind a woman, but it turns out it was just a painting.

A door suddenly shuts on a woman's face. The sound is loud. The scene is quite startling.

A woman comes into her daughter's room to discover that an old woman has visibly possessed the body of her daughter.

A woman is lost in the fog; She can't see anything. Slowly, somebody appears, and it's her husband.

Two children hide in a closet and hear something outside. The closet suddenly opens and an old woman stands in front of them. A woman goes into a room filled with sheet-covered furniture, then spooked by a sudden loud gasp.

Towards the end of the movie, a woman discovers a picture of her dead servants dated back to 1891 and the present year is 1945. Since her servants appear to be alive, we realize that her servants are ghosts. At one point we hear the ghosts say, "Don't trouble yourself, ma'am. Tuberculosis finished us off, more than half a century ago."

At the end of the movie, we discover that the female lead role has just realized that she went crazy and killed her children and herself. We then realize that they have been ghosts the whole time, and "the intruders" were actually real people.
