When Kurt Wimmer’s (Equilibrium) script for Salt was originally picked up by Columbia Pictures, Tom Cruise was attached for the lead. However, scheduling conflicts or it’s resemblance to Mission: Impossible caused him to take a walk, leaving the role wide open for Angelina Jolie.
A few gender tweaks were all they needed to turn this Cold War thriller into an action vehicle for a strong woman. Having read the script, audiences are in for one hell of an awesome flick in July 2010.
The trailer indicates there have been some changes since Wimmer’s draft, which received rewrites by Brian Helgeland (Oscar winning screenwriter of Mystic River). For example, a key assassination attempt is shown as an explosion rather than the sniper operation described in the script’s quickly-turning pages. But it’s clear from the trailer that one thing remains as the core element in the film: this »

I love salt, all types of salt really – Sea salt, table salt, rock salt and Evelyn Salt. Not familiar with that last one? She’s next summer’s female action spy played the ever so pouty-lipped Angelina Jolie. At one point, Tom Cruise was rumored to be attached to the Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, The Bone Collector) directed secret double agent yarn but ultimately, Noyce and company decided to go with a more feminine touch. Good move guys!
Jolie has proven time and again that she is the go-to woman in Hollywood for lead female action roles. Say what you want about the Tomb Raider movie, but as Lara Croft there can be no other woman playing the part. Same goes for her roles in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and last summer’s Wanted. In Salt, she appears to be just as convincing while playing a wrongly accused woman on the run. »

Earlier this week, a Russian trailer for the upcoming Angelina Jolie action-thriller Salt found its way online, but was quickly pulled down by Sony... and really, who wants to see a low-quality, dubbed version of a trailer anyway? (A lot of people... I know.) Today they have debuted the first domestic trailer for the film over at Yahoo! [1], and although it looks fairly action-packed, I can't say there is anything all that noteworthy about it either. Is Angelina Jolie really the biggest current female action star? It seems weird to say that, but I guess her filmography proves it. Either way, I'm sure they're hoping to attract fans of Wanted with this one. The production history on Salt has kind of a weird twist in that Tom Cruise was originally supposed to star in the lead role (and not in drag). Somewhere along the way they rewrote the story so »

I initially hadn't felt any interest for F. Gary Gray's Law Abiding Citizen, the director having ruined for me what great a sequel Be Cool could've been and star Gerard Butler looking like he's taken the easy paycheck route since 300. But having seen the trailer recently I have to say it looks nothing like the borefest I was expecting, And that darn thing's written by Kurt Wimmer; Ultraviolet's bad reviews aside, the dude's Equilibrium still kicks... »

Noel Clarke, Dr Who star and director/ screenwriter/ star/ tealady of Adulthood, has announced he's starting principal photography on his new film 4.3.2.1.Awarded a 'Rising Star' Bafta earlier this year for his impressive work in British film and TV, Clarke is looking to follow up the success of his directorial debut, Adulthood (sequel to Kidulthood, which he merely wrote and starred in), with an unconventional heist movie based on the four different lives of four different girls, all somehow linked to the robbery.Clarke's pulled together a good chunk of young acting talent for the project, including Emma Roberts (Nancy Drew); Tamsin Egerton (St. Trinian’s); Ophelia Lovibond (London Boulevard) and Adulthood co-star Shanika Warren Markland. Rosanna Arquette will also appear, as well as Empire favourite Sean Pertwee (well, somebody has to love Equilibrium) and Ben Miller. As one of the new movers and shakers of the British film world, »

There's been a good deal of chatter about Law Abiding Citizen, and not all of it has been positive. For good or ill, the trailer for the film seems to let you know exactly where you are, and thus viewers are moved to quick decisions. You're either interested in a film about a guy who starts dealing out his own form of justice while in prison, or you aren't, and that's the kind of story that sets people pretty firmly in once camp or the other. On the other hand, you might be a fan of Jamie Foxx or Gerard Butler, and then what the movie is about might not be that important. For me, there's still one more hand to consider, and that is Kurt Wimmer. The man behind Equilibrium (a favorite of mine), and the screenplays for the remake of The Thomas Crown Affair, and The Recruit, Wimmer »

The first trailer has recently appeared online for the upcoming Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx drama-thriller, Law Abiding Citizen. We got our first look at the movie a few days ago with two posters which didn’t quite give off the same vibe that this first trailer does.
The film stars Gerard Butler as a man whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered and after a defense attorney (Foxx) cuts a deal, the killer walks. After taking revenge on the killer by (ironically enough) murdering him, Butler’s character is imprisoned himself. However, it seems he somehow is still managing to rack up the body count, even from within prison.
There’s been quite a bit of hassle going on behind-the-scenes with Law Abiding Citizen (as our friends over at /Film have pointed out): a rewrite to the script and change of director both occured before the film moved into production. »

The first trailer for the upcoming thriller Law Abiding Citizen has hit the web this week, and while the concept is a little bit out there, I'm sure it's one that will hook a lot of people. Gerard Butler plays Clyde Shelton, a man whose wife and daughter are murdered, while Jamie Foxx plays the prosecutor who lets his family's killer walk. Unfortunately for Foxx, Shelton is not as ordinary as he might seem, and he decides to exact his own brand of justice on those responsible. The movie reminds me a little bit of Dexter meets Taken, and I have a feeling a lot will ride on the believability of the script, which is written by Kurt Wimmer who wrote and directed Equilibrium and Ultraviolet, and also wrote The Thomas Crown Affair, The Recruit and Street Kings. The movie is directed by F. Gary Gray (Friday, The Negotiator, The Italian Job »

The first trailer for Law Abiding Citizen has hit the intertubes, and we like what we see. What do we see? Well, Gerry Butler transforming from nice, family man to puppet-master and tirade of destruction, mostly. That, and Jamie Foxx looking progressively more fearful of his personal safety. Amid some confusion over the launching of the trailer, you can for the moment see the trailer for Law Abiding Citizen here. The F. Gary Gray thriller has had a rocky journey to the screen, first catching our attention as a screenplay from Kurt Wimmer (creator of one of Empire Online’s all–time favourite films in Equilibrium), before the project was handed over to another of our much loved movie makers, Frank Darabont. Sadly he too left the project, and in stepped Gray, to deliver what looks like a nicely nasty chunk of Man On Fire style remorseless revenge –albeit with a twist. »

The film Law Abiding Citizen, starring Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler (and produced by Butler's Shingle, Evil Twins) has gone through a lot of changes. Kurt Wimmer (Equilibrium) wrote the original script, which was re-written by Frank Darabont. At one point, Darabont was also set to direct. But he dropped off the project and was replaced by F Gary Gray. That tempered interest somewhat. But Et now has a trailer, and it looks like pulpy fun in the Wanted vein. Last year, when Darabont left the project (not happily, it seemed) there was a lot of confusion about the plot. Quite a few different synopses floated up. Some had Butler and listed in roles that now seem to be the opposite of what's actually in the film, others had what now seem like partial views of the actual movie. Point is, the script underwent a lot of reworking, so hopefully »

In the year 2033, Mexico City has become the perfect city, with perfect workers, and a perfect lifestyle for its citizens. Alas, that’s on the surface. The truth is underneath, and it’s not pretty to look at. Anyone who questions or thinks outside the box are dealt with harshly. Basically, “Equilibrium” without the gun-kata or Christian Bale, and in Spanish. Here’s your first look at the trailer for Francisco Laresgoiti’s “2033″. After watching the trailer, I have to say, it’s got potential, but I’m not nearly impressed by it as the guys at Quiet Earth seems to be. It looks decent, but the acting and action feel amateurish, and the plot is highly derivative. It looks like they put all their energy and effort into production values (which, admittedly, aren’t bad) to the exclusion of everything else. I could be wrong, of course, but that’s just my first impressions. »

Check out the first official movie poster featuring Paul Giamatti from the upcoming comedy “Cold Souls” by director Sophie Barthes (Happiness) and starring Paul Giamatti (The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, John Adams) and Emily Watson (The Water Horse, Equilibrium). Synopsis: In response to shiny, bigger, better American consumerism comes Cold Souls, a metaphysical comedy in which souls can be extracted and traded as commodities. Balancing on a tightrope between deadpan humor and pathos, and between reality and fantasy, the film presents Paul Giamatti as himself, agonizing over his interpretation of Uncle Vanya. Paralyzed with anxiety, he stumbles upon a solution via a New Yorker article about a high-tech company promising [...] »

Kurt Wimmer, the writer and director of Equilibrium and Ultraviolet, has been hired to write the screenplay for Columbia's remake of Total Recall.
The story, based on the Philip K. Dick story We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, follows a man haunted by a dream of travelling to Mars. After a virtual reality vacation stirs up hidden memories of a past life as a secret agent, he travels to Mars to uncover the truth.
The 1990 original starred Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role of Douglas Quaid.
The star - and California governor - who has a well-publicised 'surprise' cameo in current release Terminator Salvation, has reportedly been offered a small part in the upcoming Predators, according to Moviehole.
The site says the project's producer Robert Rodriguez has "reached out" to Arnie to ask him to reprise his role of Major Alan 'Dutch' Schaefer from the original 1987 Predator flick.

When we announced back in February that Total Recall was being rebooted, no writer or directed was attached yet. However, Columbia has now hired Kurt Wimmer to write the remake. Wimmer previously wrote Sphere, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Recruit, and Street Kings, and both wrote and directed Equilibrium and Ultraviolet. Producer Neal Moritz is developing this remake as a contemporary adaptation of the movie based on the Philip K. Dick story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." Columbia secured remake rights from Miramax, which has the option to co-finance the project when it's ready to shoot. There's nothing really in Wimmer's filmography that makes me feel confident that it's him who is writing this. Sure, Equilibrium is a fun movie, but the writing wasn't that great. The original Total Recall was directed by Paul Verhoeven, who is responsible for a lot of the crazy visuals in it. I'm »
