The Best of the Decade: 2000-2009

23 December 2009 9:56 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

A best of the decade list is an incredible thing to consider. The Aughts were ripe with imagination and originality. The past ten years also came jam packed with many new visionary directors that changed the cinematic landscape forever. Yet, at the same time, it was also a decade wrought with remakes, rip-offs, ten-year late sequels, and films based on preexisting toy properties, comic books, and amusement park rides. George Lucas offended almost everyone by dusting off his Star Wars mythos and adding copious amounts of CGI to it. And Batman, a caped figure in tights who last flourished in the trippy sixties, managed to crawl head and shoulders above the rest at the box office to be crowned king. Thus proving that the so-called "geek" or "fanboy" truly ruled the silver screen over the course of this tumultuous past decade. Today, we look at the ten films that ruled »

'Twilight' crash scene makes 4th best 'Movie Moment of the Decade'

19 December 2009 2:01 PM, PST | Twilight Examiner | See recent Twilight Examiner news »

What was an absolutely pivotal scene for 2008's Twilight has made its mark on the film community. Moviefone has listed Twilight's car crash scene (with Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson) as one of the "Top 25 Movie Moments of the Decade." Of course, the ... Uma Thurman's "Crazy 88" fight scene in Kill Bill: Vol. 1, Jim Carrey's memory loss warp scene in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, the bamboo forest scene in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Abigail Breslin's "Superfreak" dance in Little Miss Sunshine, the . . . medicinally enhanced scene in Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle, the first scene with Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone, the . . . erm . . . wrestling match in Borat, Smeagol falling into the lava in The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, the first (and rainy) spidey kiss in Spider-Man, Javier Bardem's "heads or tails" show-down in No Country For Old Men, »

Pop Culture through the Eyes of Sims

17 December 2009 11:43 PM, PST | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

The past ten years have been great -- we have embraced on a new journey through the millennium and thanks to pop culture we had many great friends along for the ride. People Magazine worked with Sims to create an image that would incorporate all things popular in the past ten years and the picture is worth a thousand words. Find out who made the cut, which movies were featured, and which love birds were caught snuggling. People asked the folks at Sims to try and encompass the past ten years into a picture and what they came up with is incredible. They wanted to create a picture that would target the 9-14 demographic, but sadly these films and people are not only swooned over by tweens. Sims made sure to add the hottest films including Harry Potter, High School Musical, and Twilight. They also added key musicians Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift, »

Shelf Life: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

16 December 2009 2:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Folks weren't too happy with my "Shelf Life" assessment of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation two weeks ago, and perhaps understandably so: the holidays, and holiday movies in particular, bring out the sentimentality, nostalgia, and often otherwise muted affection that folks feel at other times of the year and for other movies. But while I still plan to revisit It's a Wonderful Life next week - a film, I pre-emptively admit, I have no particular allegiance or fondness for - I figured I'd instead choose something safer, less passionately followed, less contentious: Harry Potter.

Of course I'm kidding. Few fan bases are as impassioned as those of J.K. Rowling's book series and their cinematic adaptations, and as a non-participant in its cultural phenomena, I recognize the shark-infested waters in which I find myself as I examine the artistic merits of a movie that is beloved by so, so, so many people. »

Home Alone helmer produces The Help

16 December 2009 12:17 AM, PST | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

Kathryn Stockett's novel The Help has been optioned by 1492 Productions, the company owned in part by Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone helmer Chris Columbus. Tate Taylor, an actor who has had small roles in film and television productions for the past decade, has already adapted the book into a screenplay and will direct the movie. Don't worry about if he can do it; he's also written the scripts for and directed two indies.

How this deal went down with Columbus was because of Taylor's personal connect to the author. It turns out that Taylor and Stockett both grew up together in Mississippi; in fact, the actor's mother served as inspiration for one of the characters in the novel. When Stockett got close to getting ready to take out her book she let Taylor take an early peek at it. Taylor then showed the book to Columbus, who he knew through a family connection. »

Harry Potter And The Sorcerer’s Stone Ultimate Edition

12 December 2009 5:59 AM, PST | AreYouScreening.com | See recent AreYouScreening news »

Generally speaking, I am not your guy when it comes to repeated releases of movies on DVD. That said, there is certainly continued interest, new fans, new films, and much more driving the Harry Potter franchise, and the Ultimate Edition sets are wonderful packages. Not only is there the hype that will come with the anticipation of the final books film treatment, but you've also got the Harry Potter Wizarding World coming to Universal Studios Orlando this spring. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Ultimate Edition includes the special features from previous releases, with both the theatrical and extended versions of the film, but with a few more goodies. The real sell of these editions is the eight-part series Creating the World of Harry Potter. Here we get Part 1: The Magic Begins. At right around an hour, the feature looks back at the first days of creating the world, »

Rupert Grint: Review of Ultimate Edition DVDs!

10 December 2009 7:35 AM, PST | Rupert-Grint.us/ | See recent Rupert Grint - Ice Cream Man news »

We have been given the chance to review Rupert Grint's first two Harry Potter movies, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in the new ultimate edition format. The movies are well worth the money to shell out for either a gift to yourself or a gift to a friend! The Rupert parts alone are worth the money as we get to see him on the set of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, never-before-seen interviews during filming of Sorcerer's Stone, him reading from Sorcerer's Stone (the point of which Ron first enters the novel), as well as the first trio screen test and his screen test with Jessie Cave! Harry Potter and the Sorcerer.s Stone Ultimate Edition on Blu-Ray

7 December 2009 10:11 AM, PST | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

This is not the first time Harry Potter has been on Blu Ray but it.s the first time I.m seeing it. What? I don.t have kids so why would I be watching it on my own? It.s not like it.s Labyrinth or anything.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Ultimate Edition on Blu-Ray

The first Harry Potter film looks good, but a little rougher than I might expect a polished studio blockbuster. I guess it.s almost a decade old already. The picture is smooth, a little wavery on the clarity. You still see details in the textures of the sets and costumes. It.s shiny and polished because this is before the series goes dark. There are also lots of bright colors like the green of the Hogwarts campus and the professors. robes.

The centerpiece of the .Ultimate Edition. is the new one hour documentary, »

Hart Shrugs Off 'Silly' Audience Outburst Claims

25 November 2009 2:01 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Harry Potter actor Ian Hart has dismissed reports he behaved aggressively towards a theatregoer who was disrupting his performance in a West End play, insisting the saga is "a lot of silliness".

Hart, best known for playing villainous Professor Quirrell in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was alleged to have jumped from the stage and threatened Gerard Earley, who was in the audience of his show Speaking in Tongues on Monday.

Earley claimed he was giving the cast a standing ovation when Hart took offence and lunged at him.

He told reporters he was considering police action against Hart, who had to be restrained by an usher.

But the actor has shrugged off the allegations, stating, "I'm absolutely not interested, it's just a lot of silliness." »

Hart Facing Police Action Over Theatre Outburst

25 November 2009 12:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Harry Potter star Ian Hart is facing police action after allegedly threatening a member of the audience while he was acting in a London play.

The British actor, best known for playing Professor Quirrell in 2001's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was appearing in West End show Speaking In Tongues on Monday when he shouted at Gerard Earley, telling him to shut up.

When the show finished, Earley claims he stood to applaud the cast but was stunned when Hart ran off the stage and into the crowd, allegedly lunging at him and accusing him of making too much noise, prompting an usher to restrain the actor.

Earley says, "I was very scared. He was standing up and leaning over me. I felt threatened when he started screaming and I couldn't make out what he was saying - he was pretty feral at that point... I thought he was going to jump down but (co-star) John Simm put his arm up to stop him. Then he just ran off the side of the stage. He came back out and ran at me. I'd sat back down by then and he was screaming and shouting, incoherent with rage. He was saying, 'You're disrespecting me, you're not respecting the other actors.'"

Earley claims he's considering whether to take legal action after Hart allegedly threatened to slap him: "I've contacted the police about the procedure for reporting assaults. I haven't ruled it out."

Last week (beg16Nov09) Hart admitted he wasn't a fan of performing on stage, explaining, "I simply don't enjoy the process, I don't enjoy the relationship between the audience and the actor... I find it hard work." »

Big Surprise: Top Grossing Movies of the Decade Are Basically All Franchise Films

17 November 2009 3:14 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Here's another list for you to digest as we approach the end of the decade. Jason Kottke [1] recently took a look at the list of highest-grossing films from 2000-2009 courtesy of Wikipedia [2], and makes the observation that only one movie in the top 20 is based on an original screenplay. The rest of the movies are all adaptations of books or sequels to existing franchises. Now, it's pretty easy to jump on this list and whine and moan about how it means there is nothing original in Hollywood anymore. While I agree that there is a problem with studios valuing brand over concept, don't forget, we are talking about the movies that made the most money here. Of Course familiar characters and titles are going to attract more viewers than strange and unfamiliar ones... doesn't that make sense? A lot of people don't even see movies at the theatre, so they »
