Her First Time.

20 November 2009 11:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Jose here with a look back at one of 2001's cinematic gems.

At a time when abortion is still a controversial issue, where the ratio of HIV infections in people under 25 increases by the day and where some systems insist on abstinence as the only form of sexual education; Catherine Breillat's Fat Girl must seem like the devil.

Its idea that people, make that pre-adolescent women, have the right and capacity to make choices about their sexuality sounds shocking now, so imagine how it was eight years ago when the movie was released. Banned by the Ontario Film Review, prohibited in Singapore and left unrated in the United States, the film's themes left audiences and critics baffled, but for all the wrong reasons.

It is not that the movie has things we haven't seen before (although full frontal male nudity continues to be scandalous in this day and age …

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire

Directed by: Lee Daniels

Cast: Gabourey Sidibe, Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey

Running Time: 1 hr 45 mins

Rating: R

Release Date: November 20, 2009

Plot: An overweight 16-year-old girl (Sidibe) struggles to keep her life together while living with her abusive mother (Mo’Nique) and attending an alternative education school in Harlem 1987.

Who’S It For? If you can’t handle rape, physical and emotional abuse, then don’t even think of seeing this film. In fact, it’s hard to say, “You’ve got to see this movie, you’ll love it!” It’s more a movie you should see. It’s the struggles of lives most of us barely know.

Expectations: Fat girl. Tough times. I was a little worried this would come off like an after school special.

Scorecard (0-10)

Actors:

Gabourey Sidibe as Precious: The layers of this performance have …

Catherine Breillat's The Last Mistress impressed a good number of top critics, even making some of these critics' Top 10 Films of 2008. Will her follow-up film entitled Bluebeard receive the same kind of critical acclaim? - - -

- - - About the Movie: Fairy tales often have main characters who are sort of serial killers of children: in other words, ogres. But Bluebeard is its symbolic figure. In the 1950s, it was also the favorite tale of good little girls. One of whom is Catherine, who loves to frighten her older sister Marie-Anne, by reading this fairy tale to her until she starts to cry. But Catherine also puts herself in the fairy tale by becoming Princess Marie-Catherine, Bluebeard's last wife, the one who escapes the fate of all those he hung before her. Alicia Silverstone Says Her 'Kind Diet' Will Make You Feel 'Magical'

'I know deeply in my heart it's a better way,' actress says of the healthy lifestyle laid out in her new book.

Alicia Silverstone was the "it" girl back in the '90s, thanks to her starring roles in several Aerosmith music videos and, of course, her star-making turn as Cher Horowitz in "Clueless." Now, Silverstone has settled into a new stage of her career, acting on Broadway in "Time Stands Still" and releasing her feel-good cookbook and diet plan "The Kind Diet."

"I've been on this journey for 11 years," she said of her healthy lifestyle. "I started to glow, and people were like, 'Why do you look so great?' I felt so much better, and I used to take an asthma inhaler and I used to get allergy shots —and all that stuff went away. …

Gregg Araki begins filming on his latest project, ‘Kaboom’

6 October 2009 2:56 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

One of the angriest, most unconventional, and relentlessly intriguing voices in independent cinema, filmmaker Gregg Araki has begun filming [1]on his latest project, a small indie film centered on teenage sexual awakening, gay or otherwise. Joining the cast as the group of college students is Thomas Dekker (The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Kelly Lynch (Drugstore Cowboy), Rooney Mara (A Nightmare On Elm Street 2010) and French actress Roxane Mesquida (Fat Girl) in her English language debut. The film seems to take Araki back to his roots. In 1987 he made his directorial debut  with Three Bewildered People in the Night. With a budget of only $5,000 and using a stationary camera, he told the story of a romance between a video artist, her lover and her gay [2] friend. Two years later, Araki made a name for himself on the festival circuit with Long Weekend (o' Despair, a very small-scale Big Chill [3] derivation involving a …

Gregg Araki Gets Sexy Again

6 October 2009 1:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Bring on the Araki! After getting busy with candy-coated 3-ways in Splendor, Gregg Araki concocted a little yin and yang. First came the gritty drama of Mysterious Skin, which revealed a range we didn't know existed. Then came the exact opposite -- the ridiculous Anna Faris-starring stoner comedy Smiley Face. But now the cult director is heading back to the green sprouts of sexual exploration.

The Hollywood Reporter posts that Araki is shooting his latest feature, Kaboom, and he's tapped Roxane Mesquida (Fat Girl), Thomas Dekker (Sarah Connor Chronicles), Kelly Lynch (Charlie's Angels), and Rooney Mara (Youth in Revolt) to star. Not much is being revealed at this time, but here's what I could find online. As THR notes, Kaboom will focus on "the sexual awakening of a group of college students." Araki started the feature last month, Helen STELLaR is performing in a scene, and Ann Magnuson (Panic Room

50 Essential Foreign Films 2000-2008 (Part 1) - Spotlight on French Cinema

2 September 2009 4:17 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Films on the cutting edge. That's how I would describe the 50 movies on this list. While some moviegoers may find it an 'alien' experience to refer to sub-titles in understanding what's happening on the big screen, a good number of audiences are totally enjoying the different and often surprising take by many foreign filmmakers, nothwithstanding the language barrier.

Content-wise, the 50 movies feature stories about war and peace, love and romance, family affairs, coming-of-age tales, cultural and religious diversity, social issues (including prostitution and abortion) and personal - celebrating life or facing death with dignity. Coverage-wise, tMF list down many of the best foreign films from 2000 until last year from the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and about 15 other countries in Europe, North and Latin America and Asia-Pacific.

Porn Star Sasha Grey has Impeccable Taste in Film

27 May 2009 10:55 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The adult film actress and star of Steven Soderbourgh’s The Girlfriend Experience has proven herself a true cinephile. On The Rotten Tomatoes show she listed her five favorite films: Herzog’s Stroszek, Catherine Breillat's Fat Girl, Godard’s Pierrot le fou (apparently great escapist entertainment), Cassavetes' A Woman Under the Influence, and Carpenter’s Escape from New York. Now try to top that badass list. Film bloggers everywhere elated (including me). A 21 year old porn star has the same highbrow taste as them. She has even vanquished me in the French film department. I haven’t seen Fat Girl or Pierrot le fou yet. But the best thing about her is that she doesn’t act a tad pretentious about it. She has some difficulty describing the films and admits to not knowing how to pronounce a couple of the directors’ names. But there seems to be a genuine love for these moves. …
