- Hong Kong: Edward Yang, the Cannes-winning Taiwanese engineer-turned-director known for his realistic portrayals of modern Taiwan, has died from complications from colon cancer, film consultant Norman Wang announced Monday. He was 59. Yang, who was an American citizen, passed away at his home in Beverly Hills on Friday. Wang won Best Director at the 2000 Cannes for his work Yi Yi, which focused on the difference between our illusion of life and the reality in which it exists. His wife, concert pianist Kaili Peng, his 6-year-old son Sean, a younger sister and a brother survive the director. Chinese director Edward Yang died on Friday following a battle with colon cancer. He was 59. The Yi Yi (A One And A Two) filmmaker died at his home in Beverly Hills, California, of complications from the deadly disease, which he had been fighting for seven years. After starting a career as a computer engineer, Yang started his film career in the early 1980s after being inspired by Werner Herzog's Aguirre The Wrath Of God. His filmography includes A Brighter Summer Day, Mahjong, and That Day on the Beach. He is survived by his widow, pianist Kaili Peng and their son. »
