No Future for Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon

16 December 2009 11:55 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

I’ve had a crush on Jake Gyllenhaal ever since I saw Donnie Darko years ago. I can only keep dating men that look like him for so much longer until I’ll have to finally experience the real thing. Well ladies and Adam Lambert, I think my time is now because according to sources that like to be all up in Reese and Jake’s business they’ve let the cat out the bag that the two are definitely no longer together.

One unknown source said, “There are no other people involved. The relationship just ended. It just fizzeled. But they also wanted to be careful and private about it because of Reese’s kids.”

Yeah, because her kids read gossip magazines and talk about their mommie’s relationship with the kids at elementary school.

Where’s a better source when you need one? Well evidently over at Popeater …

Maggie Gyllenhaal, Young Old Soul

16 December 2009 11:20 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

It's true that Maggie Gyllenhaal's first two films were directed by her father Stephen (1992's "Waterland" and the following year's "A Dangerous Woman"), but no one was crying nepotism by the time she broke out of Sundance with 2002's pitch-black comedy "Secretary," an astute character study on Bdsm behavior in which she bared all -- figuratively, literally and both ways boldly. Since then, Gyllenhaal's carved out an eclectic path through indie cinema ("SherryBaby," "Donnie Darko") and mainstream fare ("World Trade Center," "The Dark Knight"), with her richest roles typically emerging from the smaller passion projects that she clearly loves most.

Such is the case with first-time filmmaker Scott Cooper's charming country-music drama "Crazy Heart," adapted from Thomas Cobb's novel and featuring the music of co-producer T-Bone Burnett. In a performance that just nabbed him a Golden Globe nomination, Jeff Bridges headlines as 57-year-old crooner legend Bad Blake, …

Watch with mother: what are the scariest children's films?

16 December 2009 2:55 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Where the Wild Things Are has been thrilling parents and getting their offspring quivering. Which family films still give you the shakes?

Is Where the Wild Things Are, Spike Jonze's retelling of the Maurice Sendak tale about a little boy who finds kindred spirit with a horde of lumbering beasts, too scary for children? It almost certainly depends on the child. What's certain is that kids enjoy being ripped from their existences and challenged on a sensory level just as much as adults do. And they may find the strangest of things terrifying - as a child I was incapable of viewing Sam the blue eagle from the Muppets for more than a few seconds without experiencing epic nightmares that froze me to my very core.

Here are some other films which may just have parents reaching for the remote, though any shivers they engender will surely manifest themselves …

Pride And Prejudice And Zombies… the movie

14 December 2009 4:22 PM, PST | 24framespersecond.net | See recent 24FramesPerSecond news »

You knew it was only a matter of time. When the book Pride And Prejudice And Zombies came out earlier this year, it was mentioned on almost every corner of the internet, it being the awesome idea that it is. The books is a retelling of the famous Jane Austen novel. With added zombies. And now we've not only got confirmation that a movie is, in fact, in the works, but we've got some news on who is going to be a part of it. According to Variety, the film will star and be co-produced by Natalie Portman, with Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly also producing. It's also being reported that David O. Russell (I Heart Huckabees, Three Kings) is in talks to direct. …

David O. Russell Directing Pride and Prejudice and Zombies?

14 December 2009 3:42 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Just last week we found out that Natalie Portman was going to be joining the adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies in addition to producing the undead period piece with Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly. However, there was still no word on who would be directing, let alone writing the script. But with the film moving so quickly, it sounds like a director might already be in place as Pajiba claims that David O. Russell (Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees) might be writing and directing. So while the risk of a fight breaking out on set has increased exponentially, this project would certainly be in good hands. While David O. Russell is temperamental, he's one of the more original and unique filmmakers out there. You have to respect a guy who jumps from a relatively grounded film set during the Gulf War (Three Kings) to a crazy, not-easily-accessible existential …

This decade’s film: 2000-2004

14 December 2009 8:08 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Pottermania, Tolkein-mania, Twilight-mania…it’s fair to say that the noughties have been a strong one for different kinds of mania. Moreover, it’s also been the time for some pretty awesome movies. 2000 marked a particularly promising start: American Beauty, the directorial debut from Sam Mendes was a unique critique on the American dream that attracted widespread acclaim, being nominated for 8 Academy Awards and winning 5; including Best Picture. His next project, Road to Perdition proved this success to be no fluke. Apparently this was a good time for new directors, as further evidenced by Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, and Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich. Not that the decade was limited to low-budget concept flicks. Box office-smashing comic book adaptations became the name of the game; ranging from the great (Spider-Man, X-Men and Hellboy), to the not so much (Daredevil and Fantastic Four). It became (almost) socially acceptable …

There Will Be Blood Named Greatest Film Of Decade

14 December 2009 4:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

There Will Be Blood has topped a magazine rundown to find the best movie of the 2000s.

The 2007 drama, which starred Daniel Day Lewis and won two Academy Awards, was rated as the greatest film of the last ten years by experts at Britain's Total Film magazine.

The Dark Knight, released in 2008 and starring late actor Heath Ledger, was named Blockbuster of the Decade, while 2001 hit Donnie Darko was lauded as the top cult movie of the last ten years.

The publication's deputy editor, Jamie Graham, says, "The Total Film selections were designed to identify the films that have most shaped the landscape of modern mainstream cinema." …

Not Crazy About The Second Trailer For The Crazies

13 December 2009 3:12 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

We don.t really need another zombie movie, but the first trailer for The Crazies totally justifies its production. It.s disconcerting, ominous and features the contextually creepy, yet awesome song .Mad World,. which you might remember from the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Sadly, the same cannot be said for the second trailer. Don.t get me wrong, I.m still looking forward to the film, which hits theaters on February 26th, but the second trailer suggests the movie might be rather sloppy and not as original as we once thought. It shows off some possessed guys and a convoluted montage of the townsfolk freaking out, but no additional plots details and minimal new footage. You can take a look for yourself below, but, if you.ve yet to see the first trailer, be sure to click here and watch that too. …

The Crazies Trailer #2: A More Straightforward Look at a Small Town Apocalypse

12 December 2009 8:40 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

The first trailer for Breck Eisner's The Crazies was pretty good, but with one significant misstep: it made heavy use of the song 'Mad World', which for the next decade should be considered as owned lock, stock and barrel by Donnie Darko. That aside, the trailer had a fairly intriguing vibe. This second trailer omits the song, thankfully, and is a bit more straightforward. It gets into a lot less plot, jumping in when things are already going off the rails in a small town. There's more of a slasher vibe to this cut, which I'm guessing is a deliberate move to skew the film as something more simple than it actually is. As a result, the downside is that in this clip there's less of a sense that The Crazies is anything other than a 28 Days Later-style zombie movie derivative. It should be more than that, as the …

Pride, Prejudice, Portman & Zombies

12 December 2009 8:50 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Since I’ve been at Screen Rant I’ve written about some odd films in many, many different genres. Sometimes I’ve written about films that tick the boxes in multiple genres and that on the surface at least appear to be quite odd. Well, it’s time to add another film to that list: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Natalie Portman will take the lead role as love-longing zombie-eradicator Elizabeth Bennet in this big-screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith.

The plot of the film is pretty much what it says on the tin – it’s Jane Austin’s classic novel with a new zombie element grafted onto to it.

Portman will produce through her “HandsomeCharlie” production shingle along with Annette Savitch. In relation to the project, Savitch said:

“Natalie and I are longtime passionate fans of Jane Austen’s books and this a fresh, …

Portman in ‘Pride and Prejudice and Zombies’

11 December 2009 8:09 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Natalie Portman is set to star in and produce Lionsgate’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies based on the best-selling book by Seth Grahame-SmithJane Austen’s name is also tacked on the cover of the novel, but he basically used her characters to tell a flesh-eating zombie adventure.

Variety describes it an expanded version of the Austen classic, the book tells the timeless story of a woman’s quest for love and independence amid the outbreak of a deadly virus that turns the undead into vicious killers.  Portman will play Elizabeth Bennet.

This is why I love Natalie Portman, aside from the obvious aesthetic qualities and her rapping ability.  While other actresses her age are popping up in an endless stream of period pieces (I’m looking at you Keira Knightley), Portman is doing a zombie movie set in the Jane Austen world of proper attire and mild-mannered ladies. …

Bill O'Reilly, 'Eclipse' And Denise Richards' Tattoo In Today's Twitter-Wood

11 December 2009 3:30 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Ice-t had some harsh words for Bill O'Reilly today in his Twitter feed following O'Reilly's displeasure on Fox News regarding this week's episode of "Law & Order: Svu." In addition to dropping an F-bomb a few hours ago, the actor expressed his full support for writer Dick Wolf, who O'Reilly lashed out at for using his name in an unflattering manner on the show.

Elsewhere in Twitter-Wood, "Eclipse" director David Slade came out of hiding with an update on how the film is coming along. In addition to revealing a composer will be selected shortly, he characterized the way he wants Edward, Bella and Jacob to appear. Check out those posts after the jump along with Andy Milonakis' favorite new Android app and shot of Denise Richards' tattoo. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for December 11, 2009.

Portman, Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies

11 December 2009 10:05 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

If you've been in a bookstore in the past year or two, you have no doubt seen the rather grisly cover shot for Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It's a clear distortion of the kind of cover you'd expect for Pride and Prejudice, with that distortion being, as you can see below, zombificated. (That's not a word.)

The book was almost certainly destined to be a movie, so in love are megaplex patrons with the undead these days. Variety informs us that Natalie Portman will produce and star in the film adaptation, co-produced by Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko). Would he direct? There's no word yet, but based on the terrible performances of his last two movies, maybe he should.

Portman would play Elizabeth Bennet, the heroine of the timeless novel, "who is distracted from her quest to eradicate the zombie menace by the arrival of the arrogant Mr. Darcy." So, …

So. I haven't read this book, but I have to assume this is all played for laughs right? Either way, this could make for a really entertaining movie, and Portman seems perfect for the role. Natalie Portman will fight zombies, Victorian social conventions

11 December 2009 12:13 AM, PST | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Natalie Portman will star in the latest Jane Austen adaptation to come to movie theaters -- you know, the one with zombies.

Portman, who's currently starring in "Brothers," will take the lead role in "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," based on the book by Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith, who added the flesh-eating undead to Austen's tale of two sisters searching for love and happiness.

Portman will also be a producer of the movie, along with partner Annette Savitch. "Natalie and I are longtime passionate fans of Jane Austen's books and this is a fresh, fun and thought-provoking way to approach her work," Savitch tells Variety. "The idea of zombies running rampant in 19th century England may sound odd, but it lends a modern sense of urgency to a well-known love story."

"Donnie Darko" director Richard Kelly, Sean McKittrick and Ted Hamm will also serve as producers. There's no word …

Push the Button – What’s in the Box?

9 December 2009 6:58 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Richard Kelly’s debut,  Donnie Darko was one of the most original films of the decade. Featuring a time travel storyline wrapped up in a high school comedy drama, it stood up to repeated viewings. He came thudding down to earth with his follow up Southland Tales. The three hour cut featuring the cream of acting talent (!) Sean William Scott, The Rock and Justin Timberlake received a vitriolic reception at the Cannes Film Festival and was re-cut for its British release. With his new film The Box, fans hoped that he could reign in his some of his more outlandish ideas and prove he was more than a one trick pony. So it is hugely disappointing to report that this box should have stayed closed. Like Darren Aronovsky’s The Fountain, it’s a film that looks fantastic, but has got a little too concerned with its own importance.  The …

A Paranormal number of flops

8 December 2009 9:02 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

New releases Me and Orson Welles, The Descent: Part 2 and The Box fail to offer much opposition as Paranormal Activity leapfrogs into top spot in its second week

For distributors with a new release this weekend, the only solace to be grasped at was that their movie hadn't done as badly as someone else's. As executives gathered at the annual British independent film awards in London on Sunday night, the talk was of how all the new films targeting adult audiences had flopped – the only differences were the degrees of failure.

Flop #1

Bottom of the pile of wide releases was Me and Orson Welles, which failed to crack a £1,000 screen average on 187 prints. Comparisons with Zac Efron's recent hits 17 Again (£2.56m debut) and High School Musical 3 (£8.41m including previews) are hardly fair, but his latest film's £166,000 opening confirms widely held suspicions that his many young fans wouldn't show …

Review: The Box – can’t get no satisfaction

7 December 2009 7:43 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Richard Kelly, who wrote and directed Donnie Darko, is behind The Box, and it is essentially another confusing, metaphysical period piece filled with sci-fi sensibilities and half-formed ideas powered by lofty ambitions. Whilst Donnie Darko worked because it integrated this into a story that was essentially about teenage angst and romance, The Box has no such anchoring narrative. As such it drifts into the absurd, feeling inconsistent, incomprehensible and worst of all tedious. Set in 1976, The Box follows the financially troubled family of a Nasa scientist (a character based on the life and work of Kelly’s own father if IMDb is to be believed, and played by James Marsden) whose wife (Cameron Diaz) receives a visit from a disfigured stranger bearing a gift. That gift is a box with a button in it, and instructions on its use. She is told that if the button is pressed within 24 hours …

You review: The Box | Ben Child

7 December 2009 5:51 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Only one critic seems to have thought outside the box when it comes to reviewing The Box: Roger Ebert, who didn't completely trash Richard (Donnie Darko) Kelly's moral choice thriller. Would you take a lucky dip?

The critics are as confused by Richard Kelly's new thriller as its central protagonists are by the MacGuffin of the title. Some reckon this is a flawed but entertaining fantasy that defies its roots in cheapo 1970s sci-fi to present an intriguing moral dilemma. Others are bamboozled by the far-from-seamless shift into preposterous M Night Shyamalan territory about an hour in: with all those nosebleeds, mysterious figures and hints of the presence of powers from beyond this Earth, the movie is like an extended episode of Lost without the verdant Pacific island vegetation and taut torsos to sugar the perplexing pill.

Kelly loves his period settings - remember Donnie Darko's John Hughes 80s teen movie chic? …
