Ratings: CBS Swamps The Competition

15 hours ago | Studio Briefing - TV News | See recent Studio Briefing - TV News news »

CBS made it almost a clean sweep in last week's ratings competition. Of the top 15 entertainment shows, CBS accounted for 14 of them. Its Monday-night Big Bang Theory and its Tuesday-night The Good Wife each scored season highs, and its Sunday-night Survivor finale improved on last year's finale for the reality series. The network was nearly as dominant among viewers 18-49. In the nightly news race, Charles Gibson's swan song on Friday gave ABC's World News a rare win over NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. The two news programs drew solid numbers throughout the week, with the NBC newscast averaging 9.22 million viewers and the ABC newscast, 8.49 million. For the week overall, CBS averaged a 7.0 rating and a 12 share. NBC placed second with a 4.5/8. Fox followed with a 4.1/7, while ABC trailed with a 3.1/5.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:

1. NCIS, CBS, 12.7/21; 2. Sunday Night Football (Minnesota at Carolina), NBC, »

DVD Playhouse—December 2009

By

Allen Gardner

Public Enemies (Universal) Johnny Depp portrays legendary Depression-era bank robber John Dillinger in co- writer/director Michael Mann’s take on America’s first “Public Enemy Number One.” Like many big studio releases today, Public Enemies has it all: A-list talent before and behind the camera, but lacks a heart or soul that allows its audience to connect with it. Film plays out like a “true crime” TV show with re-enactments of famous events cast with top actors and shot by the best technicians in the business, with little, if any, character or story development to hold it together in between. A real disappointment from one of our finest filmmakers and finest actors. The lone standout: the great character actor Stephen Lang as a hard-eyed lawman who’s seen a lot, but manages to retain a tiny piece of his heart. For a better take on the same subject, »

Untouched by Scandals, Taylor Swift Considered for Supergirl Role

17 December 2009 1:04 AM, PST | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Never being involved in any scandals despite of her fame at such a young age could bring Taylor Swift a comic book hero role in the future. According to reports, the 20-year-old singer is being considered as the front-runner to play Supergirl due to her clean sheets as movie bosses are desperate to bring the Girl of Steel back to the big screen.

"Hollywood is short of female heroes and the time is right for a new Supergirl," an industry insider is quoted by Hollyscoop as saying. "She has all the right elements to be a positive role model to young girls. A number of young stars are being mentioned for the title role in a Supergirl movie and possible TV spin-off and Taylor is top of that list."

Should the rumor is proven true, the role as Kara Zor-El's alter ego will be Taylor's first leading part in a movie biz. »

Jackson And Fishburne Embroiled In Movie Lawsuit

15 December 2009 4:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Executives at a Hollywood production company have filed a lawsuit against an insurance company after Samuel L. Jackson dropped out of a new movie - and they were forced to hire Laurence Fishburne instead.

Producers at Capitol Films U.S. hired the Pulp Fiction star to take the lead role in Black Water Transit, but Jackson dropped out after suffering an unspecified back injury.

The movie bosses wanted to scrap the crime thriller altogether, but allege they were forced to recast the role and continue with the project as their insurance policy didn't cover appropriate production losses.

They subsequently hired CSI: Crime Scene Investigation star Fishburne to appear in the movie, but have filed suit against insurance company Aon, according to TMZ.com.

The legal papers, filed at Los Angeles County Superior Court, allege Capitol lost more than $20 million (£12.5 million) in the wrangling over the movie. »

question of the day: How has the new shape of prime-time changed your TV viewing?

30 November 2009 7:46 AM, PST | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

An Associated Press story yesterday about the terrible performance of Jay Leno’s primetime show revealed some intriguing tidbits about how television viewing is changing in the United States: With one-third of American TV households now equipped with DVRs like TiVo, the 10 p.m. hour is emerging as a popular time for people to catch up on what they missed earlier in the evening, or earlier in the week. ... For example, many people watch CBS' "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" Thursdays at 9, tape ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" at the same time, then watch the medical soap an hour later, he said. They may tape "The Mentalist" (Thursday at 10) for later viewing. One casualty of growing DVR usage is that Friday nights, home of "Medium" and "Ugly Betty," are becoming a TV wasteland because so many people are catching up on programs they missed during the week. CSI Trilogy: CBS took three of their most popular shows and brought fans a multiple night CSI event spanning CSI: Miami (TV), CSI: NY (TV) and CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (TV).
