Q: I'm curious about Project Runway's Christopher Straub. The ring he wears suggests he has a husband / partner / significant other. What details might you know on this? Every time Heidi had him in tears, I found myself strongly torn between wanting to give him a hug and going all Cher on him. – LgH, Houston, TX, Usw, Earth
A: “I am married!” Straub tells the Flying Monkey. “Well, not legally, but Ronnie and I had a commitment ceremony two-and-a-half years ago. We've been together for over five years. He's a little scientist, and we really don't understand what each other does for a living.”
I asked what the two of them do for fun. “We like to travel, watch TV – I like reality shows and he »

This week saw the too-rapid close of the Neil Simon revival Brighton Beach Memoirs on Broadway, as well as the opening of three Off Broadway productions: The Understudy, starring Justin Kirk, Julie White, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar (above); Idiot Savant with Willem Dafoe; and Nightingale with Lynn Redgrave. Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because "the »

The boys in tights may get all the press (and deservedly so) in Stephen Daldry's Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of Billy Elliot, but anyone who has seen the show knows veteran character actor Gregory Jbara subtly steals the show as the boy's proud (eventually anyway) papa. Jbara, who took home the Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle Awards for the role, has been waiting his whole life for a role that he could really show off his skills and shine in. He found it with "Elliot," and don't think for a second he doesn't know and appreciate that. "This role was a complete roast beef dinner," he said. "It's my coming of age thing...no more goofy or silly roles." Jbara has chewed up scenes on Broadway in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Chicago (as Billy Flynn), and made appearances... »

A week loaded with oh-so-worthy awards season contenders is offset with the comic relief of Jim Carrey's performance captured flailing, George Clooney's self-deluded staring, and the teasing promise of an affordable(!) trip to the ballet.

You could make the argument that if Richard Kelly could only get the whole world to come over to his house and listen to his record collection, he might not feel the need to make films at all. That said, his fall from grace following the flop of "Southland Tales" was so total that he went from the director anointed as the hipster's David Lynch to the arthouse M. Night Shyamalan overnight. With much riding on this comeback, Kelly has turned to Richard Matheson's short story "Button, Button," previously immortalized as an episode of "The Twilight Zone, »

This week saw the opening of two new Broadway productions, both revivals: The Neil Simon Plays: Brighton Beach Memoirs, a comedy-drama starring former Roseanne star Laurie Metcalf (left), which I described as "a fine revival, easily the best show of a young Broadway season," and the musical Finian's Rainbow, which Tanner Stransky called "an odd, farcical muscial" that is "well cast and smartly performed." This week saw the opening of two new Broadway productions: Memphis, an original musical from the creators of The Toxic Avenger Musical, and After Miss Julie, an adaptation of August Strindberg's Miss Julie starring Jonny Lee Miller and Sienna Miller (left). EW's Clark Collis calls Memphis "a mixed bag" and gives it a C+, while Jeff Labrecque gives After Miss Julie a C and remarks that "the actors' chemistry is surprisingly stagnant." According to Rottentomatoes.com, Where the Wild Things Are, which opens on Friday, is getting mixed-to-decent reviews. I'm trying hard to wrap my mind around this, because I saw the film on Monday, and it simply doesn't work.
Because of all the buzz, I suspect the movie will open strong, but I'll be shocked if the box office doesn't collapse as word-of-mouth gets out about how muddled and frequently outright boring it is.
But I'll grant you that it's not terrible in the way that earlier "bad" movies this year have been — movies such as G-Force (which was soul-less and completely by-the-numbers) or Year One (which was a meandering, painfully unfunny mess).
Director Spike Jonze at least tried to make something truly different. Much has been made of the fact that he was trying to create the sense of being a nine-year-old boy — the sense of confusion, the feeling that »

Give me a B, give me an R, give me a…nope it’s too long. The world of cheerleading is making a comeback in the stage adaptation of the 2000 hit movie Bring It On. Cleverly titled Bring It On: The Musical, it’s due to hit the stage in 2011 with a small regional run, hopefully followed by a national tour. Created by a team of Broadway specialists like Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights) and Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) composing the music, Amanda Green (High Fidelity) in charge of lyrics and Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q) writing the book. Directed and choreographed by Andy Blankenbuehler (also of In the Heights), it looks set to be a huge success.
The original movie followed two cheerleading teams competing to win the championships when a member of the Toro’s (Kirsten Dunst) finds out their routine was stolen from their rival squad, »

MattCanada reporting from the Toronto International Film Festival
The festival has ended and Lee Daniels' Precious has won the jury prize. Congratulations to it, and the scores of awards it is now assured to collect. Before I say goodbye, notes on the last two films I saw at Tiff: Le Refuge and the much talked about Fish Tank.
I was very excited for Le Refuge because François Ozon is one of those world cinema directors I always enjoy. However, despite great performances and beautiful cinematography, it left me cold. The story of a pregnant drug addict (Isabelle Carré) forming a relationship with the dead baby-daddy's gay brother (Louis-Ronan Choisy) seemed too oblique to me. Maybe it's just that I like a few more histrionics, but to be perfectly honest, by the time the film ended I felt very little. Le Refuge is technically accomplished but I just couldn't connect with the film, »

Currently ranked #3 at the Top 50 Hitlist, Jamie Bell is one of the most consistent young actors today - his role in Defiance may not be as meaty as Daniel Craig's but he was able to pull it off and put his level of acting at par with his more illustrious co-stars. He also made waves in Hallam Foe, from Scottish filmmaker David McKenzie - this film, I believe, is Bell's best movie to date.

- - - Tintin the movie is going to be Jamie Bell's next big project - perhaps as big as Billy Elliot or maybe not:
As Tintin, Jamie Bell has a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Working with Spielberg with a huge budget and an internationally famous character could springboard Bell into Hollywood’s A-List. Becoming an action film hero and a sex symbol along the lines of Harrison Ford and Matt Damon is entirely possible. »

Stepping up to make the first film in Lars Von Trier's proposed Advanced Party trilogy, Andrea Arnold delivered a powerhouse of a debut feature film in Red Road, one which the Von had to admit in his gruff monotone, "...had massive balls". Though the other films (all to be set in Scotland, feature the same cast and to be written and directed by first time directors) are yet to be made, Arnold has set up a film to beat and in Fish Tank has once again produced a very real, darkly funny and ultimately hopeful portrait of small time England. Like her Oscar winning short Wasp, Arnold's second feature proper, is part Ken Loach social-realism, part Lynne Ramsey dreamer tale but with a voice all of its own. Shot with a serene grit in a 1:1 square format by Arnold regular Robbie Ryan. Every nuance of harsh beauty is »
