David Mamet's Anne Frank Film Scared Disney

24 September 2009 6:30 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

About a month ago, Walt Disney Pictures announced that it has acquired the rights to "The Diary of Anne Frank" and has hired David Mamet (Heist, Spartan) to direct and write the script. The story would be Mamet's own original take on the material. Now, after taking a look at what Mamet has in mind, Disney is trying to get rid of the project. "It's very intense, and dark and scary," said a Disney executive. "It's not a film version of 'The Diary of Anne Frank.' The story evolved into something more intense." Apparently, the screenplay that Mamet wrote is not a retelling of the famous Holocaust drama taken from the diaries of Frank, but a contemporary Jewish girl who goes to Israel and learns about the traumas of suicide bombing. In fact, the whole premise is an exploration of anti-semitism set in modern times. »

David Mamet to Direct Diary of Anne Frank

Disney has acquired rights to a new rendition of "The Diary of Anne Frank," to be written and helmed by David Mamet (Heist, Spartan). The film will be an amalgamation of the famed diary; the stage adaptation by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich; and Mamet's own original take on the material that could reframe the story as a young girl's right of passage. Frank, who died at 15 in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, became an icon of the Holocaust after the post-war publication of the diary that she kept during the two years that her family hid in a secret attic apartment in Amsterdam. Producer Andrew Braunsberg, best known for producing "Being There," spent a year gathering the rights from the Anne Frank Estate as well as the estates of Hackett and Goodrich. He met with Icm's John Burnham, who recommended Mamet. Mamet sparked to the opportunity tell the story, »

Disney to Produce New Diary of Anne Frank Movie, David Mamet To Direct

12 August 2009 6:08 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Disney has acquired the rights to The Diary of Anne Frank and plans to make a new movie adaptation with David Mamet, according to Variety.

Frank's diary chronicles her time in hiding from the Nazis. She and several family members resided in a secret attic in Amsterdam for two years before being captured and sent to concentration camps. Frank died just a few months before the end of World War II in May 1945. Her family published the diary posthumously, and it has since sold many millions of copies in all major languages.

Mamet is perhaps most famous as a playwright, earning a Pulitzer Prize for Glengarry Glen Ross, which was adapted for the screen in 1992. He directed The Spanish Prisoner, Heist, and State and Main, and also earned a Best Screenplay Oscar nomination for Wag the Dog (1997).

Reportedly, Mamet will add his own interpretation, drawing from both the original diary »

David Mamet to direct 'Anne Frank' movie

12 August 2009 1:52 AM, PDT | screeninglog.com | See recent screeninglog news »

Oscar-nominated filmmaker David Mamet is set to write and direct a new big-screen version of "The Diary of Anne Frank," which Disney will develop.

Variety says the project will be based on the play by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich, and Mamet's own version of the famous true story.

Of course, the focus will remain on the diary Anne Frank wrote while hiding from the Nazis in the secret attic apartment in Amsterdam.

Mamet recently directed "Redbelt," a film I admit I haven't seen yet. I did however highly enjoy "Spartan," "Heist" and even "State and Main." »

David Mamet to Adapt The Diary of Anne Frank Once Again

11 August 2009 11:18 PM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Acclaimed filmmaker David Mamet (House of Games, Homicide, Heist, Redbelt) is set to write and direct a new rendition of The Diary of Anne Frank. According to Variety, Disney (of all studios) has recently acquired the rights to the 15-year-old Holocaust victim's diary first published in English in 1952. The film is going to be an amalgamation of Frank's own writings, Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich's stage play, and (of course) Mamet's own original take on the material. Supposedly, this take may explore the young girl's right of passage. Now, I'm no fan of David Mamet. At least not when he's sitting in the director's chair... He's written a couple of my favorite films -- The Verdict and The Untouchables - and he even wrote The Edge, which, you've got to admit, is a classic. But when Mamet retains complete control, both writing and directing, it's all a bit too much. »
