Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. (2000 - 2009)

31 December 2009 3:40 PM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

As 2009 comes to a close, we take a look back at some of the people and events that made this the Best. Lesbian. Decade. Ever. in pop culture.

Luckily for all of us, there was far more information to have mentioned from the last ten years than we could have included in this brief survey. That's why our lists for each year are not intended to be exhaustive, but are instead snapshots of different memorable moments that included the representation of lesbians and bisexual women in film, television, music, literature, comics, sports and the Internet since the year 2000.

AfterElton.com Readers Name Director, Author and TV Writer of the Decade!

28 December 2009 9:14 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Ang Lee, Alan Ball, David Sedaris

To mark the end of the Aughts, we gave readers the chance to name those they felt who had the biggest impact over the past ten years in a variety of pop culture areas. Over the next week we are going to be announcing the winners starting with the movie director, television writer and author. Up first, our only straight winner!

Film Director: Ang Lee

Having made Brokeback Mountain (#1 in our 2009 poll of the greatest gay movies) alone likely would have been enough to earn Ang Lee this award, but the gay-friendly director also made Taking Woodstock, another gay-themed flick, just this year, as well as The Wedding Banquet back in 1993. Clearly, he loves telling our stories and we love him for doing so!

TV Writer: Alan Ball

While Ball, the creator of Six Feet Under and the TV adaptation of True Blood, racked »

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (December 04, 2009)

4 December 2009 4:53 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

It's Like Having 34,000 Kids. And You Better Not Have A Favorite!

In my last Best.Gay.Week.Ever! I included a collage to show the avatars of just a few of our wonderful AfterElton.com readers who make this site such a great, vibrant place. Just a nice way to show my appreciation with no possible repercussions, right?

Wrong! The squabbling between readers started almost immediately along with charges of favoritism and possibly bribes being offered to a certain editor. Honestly, I haven't seen so much arguing since the last Walker family dinner on Brothers & Sisters.

To assuage those hurt feelings and show that I don't have favorites, I've put together an even bigger collage of avatars chosen strictly at random! There are no favorites here! I love all 34,000 Ae readers equally! I swear!

Sadly, one of the most ferocious arguments that broke out over the previous collage was between »

The Morning Meme (Wednesday, November 25, 2009)

Broadway Speaks is hosting "A Very Mary Christmas" to benefit The Ali Forney Center in providing services to homeless Glbt youth. Guests are Sandra Berhardt and RuPaul's Drag Race winner Bebe Zahara Benet (pictured in teaser photo), while performers include Nick Adam's biceps, Logo's own Jeffery Cole, Cole Escola, Bd Wong and more. Tickets are available from $25.

I spend so much time writing about homophobic NFL players and homophobic NBA players that I don't know what to do with gay-supportive NHL players. First we had a retired player write an editorial in USA Today wishing he'd done more to combat homophobia. Now we have Brendan Burke, son of hockey legend Brian Burke, coming out to his family, and his college team, and finding nothing but support.

It's not enough that The Daily Show is the best advocate we have on television, they have to go and make it even easier to love them, »

AfterElton Briefs: Wall-to-Wall Adam Lambert, Lady GaGa, Alan Cumming and more

Mariah Carey wins for Precious

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear. Yes, we're serious.

Above, you can see a decidely de-glammed Mariah Carey, who's going to be honored with the "Breakthrough Performance Award" at the Palm Springs Film Festival for her role in out director Lee Daniel's Precious. There's a mountain of Adam Lambert news, so I'm going to try and condense it: ABC is claiming 1500 complaints about Adam's performance. Compare that to 500,000 for Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction. Most even-handed reporting on the subject? The BBC wins by a mile. Despite characterizing the complaints as"moderate" ABC has chosen to cancel Adam's Good Morning America performance on Wednesday morning. Given his controversial American Music Awards performance, we were concerned about airing a similar concert so early in the morning. But his trip to New York City is hardly wasted, »

Ask the Flying Monkey! (November 2, 2009)

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Send it to aftereltonflyingmonkey@yahoo.com! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

Q: What do you Really think about the circumstances surrounding Stephen Gately’s death? Do you think ill of him and his partner for being a negative representative of the gay community and its fight for marriage (in many people's eyes, threesomes aren’t "normal" when you’re married)? -- Curious from My House, USA

Stephen Gately

A: Now that’s an interesting question!

Are there times when I’m embarrassed by what other gay folks do? Well, I know that the actions of other people have no real bearing whatsoever on me – especially when you’re talking about someone who is as only tangentially related to me as merely being another member of my same minority.

Still, I also know that that’s not how a lot of people see it. »

Death By "Torchwood": Captain Jack, Ianto Jones, And The Rise Of The Queer Superhero

27 October 2009 6:09 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Few deaths have been more shocking to gay television viewers than that of Ianto Jones in this summer’s Torchwood: Children Of Earth. His death during the fourth night of the BBC miniseries created a huge backlash, none of which surprised me more than claims that Ianto’s demise was an expression of the show’s homophobia.

Created by Russel T Davies, an openly gay writer famous for the complex and empowering Queer As Folk, and starring John Barrowman, who might just be the most boisterously “out” star in the industry, Torchwood has been a bastion of queer pride since its debut in 2006. It evokes a world where homophobia is so non-existent that labels “gay,” “straight,” and “bi” have become irrelevant.

So how does the death of one of TV’s few prominent queer characters involved in a same-sex relationship fit into the show’s socially progressive vision? To my mind, »

‘Sex Crime Panic’ Finds Director

22 October 2009 9:29 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Funny Boy Films has found in Peter Paige a director for their drama Sex Crime Panic.

With starring roles in both the short-lived animated series Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World and the Showtime hit Queer as Folk, Paige is no stranger to working with scripts concerning the Glbt community, making him a particularly good choice to direct the film.

Based on Neil Miller’s book Sex Crime Panic: A Journey to the Paranoid Heart of the 1950s, the film will look at the issue of homosexuality in the 50s. The movie will tell the true story of how a group of men was thrown in a mental institution for the sole fact of being gay.

This is a heavy topic, and finding a director who can approach it in an appropriate manner is a necessity. Said Paige, “We’re thinking of this film in the vein of Capote, »

Best. Gay. Week. Ever. (October 16, 2009)

15 October 2009 6:47 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Last weekend's Equality March in Washington D.C. got me to thinking about how far we have — and haven't — come in the fight for gay equality. But since AfterElton.com focuses on pop culture, I'm going to look at things through that lens and leave the political analysis for Pam's House Blend, Americablog, Bilerico and the other assorted gay political websites that cover the topic.

One of the very first times American television addressed the subject of gay men (bisexuality was almost never addressed) was way back in 1954 when the L.A. based tabloid talk show Confidential File presented "Homosexuals and the Problems They Present." Hmm, I'm guessing it wasn't terribly flattering unless it was about how boring straight people looked in comparison to us 'mos.

San Francisco's public TV station did the first ever documentary, The Rejected in 1961 and it wasn't until 1967 that a television show first featured a gay storyline. »

Previews: Sex and the (Gay) Superhero

9 September 2009 | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Brian Andersen, the award winning writer behind the queer superhero comics So Super Duper and Reignbow & Dee-va sends word of his latest creation: Sex And The Superhero.

Sex And The Superhero is part Queer As Folk and part Sex And The City by way of Superman and the hulk. Funny and a bit naughty, it's a behind-the-scenes look at a group of very gay, very super heroes who meet up regularly for talk, support -- and dishing on their romantic entanglements.

It's like what you think Batman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman do after Green Lantern goes home. Only everyone is gay.

Andersen describes Sex And The Superhero as "...a ready for basic cable comic book that will have you chuckling with delight." And it is funny, too. Cute. Makes me want to move to what ever city they protect on the off chance that one of them will save me. »

Interview: Bruce Campbell and Sharon Gless Talk 'Burn Notice'

5 August 2009 9:15 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Burn Notice just keeps burning it up. It's winning ratings battles not just in the cable channel ghetto but when going up against the networks. The show, about the trials and tribulations of Michael Westen, discredited covert operative, has become popular.

But it is certainly not populist. Burn Notice has stuck to its subversive roots, with recipes for MacGyvering up everything from surveillance equipment to homemade explosives. And with supporting stars like Bruce Campbell, Sharon Gless and Gabrielle Anwar backing up Jeffrey Donovan, this show is anything but the usual television fare.

Hot on the heels of a season four pick-up, Bruce Campbell and Sharon Gless were on the phone earlier this week to talk about what makes the show so successful. Among other things? Manipulative mothers from hell.

The summer finale of Burn Notice, "Long Way Back", airs tonight on USA Network. The final six episodes of the show's »

The two stars talk about the upcoming Season 3 finale of the series

Burn Notice is one of the main reason that the USA Network has simply dominated the basic cable ratiings this year and the show's third season is about to come to an end. The Season 3 finale of Burn Notice will air on Thursday, August 6 at 9 Pm Et on the USA Network, and two of the reasons for the show's success are the actors Bruce Campbell, who plays ex-spy Sam Axe and Sharon Gless, who plays Madeline Westen, Michael Westen's mother. The two legendary actors recently held a conference call discussing this third season coming to a close, and here's what they had to say.

Bruno Gets Backlash From the Gay Community

18 June 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | Celebuzz.com | See recent Celebuzz news »

An outcry against Bruno from the Hollywood gay community has caused filmmakers to do "significant reshoots" of the more controversial scenes in an effort to reduce the backlash caused by Sacha Baron Cohen's newest satire, movie gossip site The Wrap reports. What the movie satirizes is a point of dispute. While Universal Pictures stands by its claim that the overall message is against homophobia and that the "overwhelming majority of the audience" will realize this, many in the gay community fear that this will be lost on the heterosexual masses. Peter Paige from Queer As Folk has his doubts. "When you see. »

Watch and Discuss: Check out the first episode of "Nurse Jackie"

22 May 2009 7:44 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

If you took a gander at our Summer Gay Television Guide, you may have noticed mention of a 30-minute dramedy arriving on Showtime next month called Nurse Jackie. Not much was known about the details of the hospital-set series other than it stars the sublime Edie Falco (The Sopranos, Oz) as a seriously flawed nurse trying to actually help people in the even more seriously flawed NYC healthcare system, and that her character would have a gay Bff named Mo-Mo, played by super-dreamy Haaz Sleiman (The Visitor).

Showtime has a pretty awesome reputation for gay-inclusive programming (Queer As Folk, The L Word) and quirky, quality original series (Dexter), so we were cautiously optimistic about Jackie. And now that the net has put the first episode online for free (details below), I don't think we had reason for caution. In fact, my only regret in watching the premiere ep »

Exclusive: Moore Talks Hero on Showtime and Treader in Oz!

15 April 2009 8:08 AM, PDT | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Perry Moore is on pins and needles.

The author of Hero and producer of the Chronicles of Narnia, is eagerly awaiting word on whether Hero, his gay teen super hero story that's won raves and awards, is going to get the greenlight from Showtime to go to pilot and series.

At his invitation, I gave him a call to find out a little bit about the pending details of Hero, his hope for the series, and what we, as fans, can do to help get it on the air.

“This is the story I really want to tell for the next three, four or five years,” he said, his excitement leaping out of the iPhone.  “If we get this to go, this will open eyes, touch hearts and reach everyone – gay people and straight people alike.”

Perry told me that Hero is one of three scripts currently being decided on by [Bob Greenblatt at Showtime.  “Stan Lee and I pitched them and HBO, almost back to back, on a Friday. They both turned right around called on a Saturday, expressing interest in developing the series further. They were that interested.”

So why Showtime, »
