Comics to screen: Latest titles heading to film, TV, iTunes and iPhone

6 November 2009 8:43 PM, PST | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Sin City producer Stephen L'Heureux's Solipsist Films has acquired the rights to Ed Laroche's graphic novel Almighty.

According to Mania, Black Hawk Down screenwriter Ken Nolan is attached to write the script and potential directors are being approached.

Created, written and drawn by Laroche, Almighty takes place in 2098 and follows a female motorcycling mercenary called Fale, who is hired to rescue a girl and bring her home across a third world America - "a fractured landscape of segregated zones driven by neo-tribalism."

Laroche said: "At its heart Almighty is a pursuit story. As the story unfolds there are other things that are attached to it but at the core of it, a girl has been kidnapped and someone has hired a killer to find her and bring her home." The official website for Almighty is here.

Mania adds that Solipsist has also picked up screen rights on two other titles. »

Ed Laroche's graphic novel Almighty is to be adapted as a feature film courtesy of Sin City producer Stephen L'Heureux's Solipsist Films. According to Mania, Black Hawk Down scribe Ken Nolana is attached as writer, and a director is currently being sought for the project. The book takes place in post-apocalyptic America in 2098, where the neo-tribalism has become a way of life. It follows a female mercenary named Fale, who must brave the dangerous terrain to rescue a young girl from kidnappers. Writer and artist Laroche said that Fale marks a departure from the traditional female action hero. Q&A: Mark Bowden Talks About "A Crime of Shadows"

5 November 2009 1:07 PM, PST | Vanity Fair | See recent Vanity Fair news »

Vanity Fair Contributing Editor Mark Bowden delves into the darkest, most disturbing corners of the Internet this month in “A Crime of Shadows.” Bowden examines the case of J, a convicted sex offender who served a year in prison after a Philadelphia police detective engaged him in Internet sex talk about children. J, who never committed, nor, he insists, intended to commit, any actual molestation, is guilty of airing his perverse fantasies (many unfit to print) to an undercover cop. But the real crime? It’s not clear there ever was one. Bowden spoke to Vf Daily about the legal and moral complexities of the case. Claire Howorth: For people who associate you with Black Hawk Down and Killing Pablo, this will seem like a very different subject for you. Mark Bowden:  The truth is, if you were to look at a sampling of my magazine work, over the last 25 years, »

'Sin City' Producer Bringing 'Almighty' To The Big Screen

5 November 2009 6:58 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Ed Laroche’s graphic novel “Almighty” has been optioned by “Sin City” producer Stephen L'Heureux’s Solipsist Films.

According to Mania, “Black Hawk Down” screenwriter Ken Nolan is also attached to adapt the script and “Almighty” is already being shown to potential directors.

Created, written and drawn by Laroche, “Almighty” takes place in 2098 and follows Fale, a female mercenary who is hired to rescue a girl from kidnappers and bring her home safely across the dangerous terrain of a "third world America" that has descended into neo-tribalism.

According to Laroche, Fale is a departure from the standard female action hero—embodied in recent years by Kate Beckinsale’s Selene from the “Underworld” film series and numerous Milla Jovovich movies like “Resident Evil” and “Ultraviolet.”

HBO Films Grabs the Rights to Guests of the Ayatollah Novel

4 November 2009 4:28 PM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Variety reports that HBO Films has picked up the novel "Guests of the Ayatollah: The Iran Hostage Crisis, The First Battle in America's War With Militant Islam," by Mark Bowden (he wrote the book Black Hawk Down).

Andrea Berloff (World Trade Center) will be adapting this book.

The property chronicles how 66 Americans were taken hostage on Nov. 4, 1979. Many were not freed until January 1981. The event started as an expression of student outrage over the U.S. decision that allowed the ousted shah of Iran for medical treatment. It then spawned the rise of Ayatollah Khomeini and his hardline Islamic supporters.

There was a rescue attempt that ended disastrously, and the crisis hung over the Carter administration. It also bolstered the rise of the conservative Republican Ronald Reagan. He defeated Carter in the election, then "promptly unfroze $8 billion in Iranian assets and took the bows when the hostages were freed."

Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy Hit the ‘Fury Road’

2 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

These days it’s hard to go a week without hearing about some remake/reboot coming out of Hollywood. Few of these films can claim they’ve been in the rumor mill for as long as Mad Max: Fury Road.  After two decades, however, actual development is occurring  on the next installment of the Mad Max franchise.

Variety is reporting that Charlize Theron (The Italian Job, Hancock) and Tom Hardy (Black Hawk Down, Star Trek: Nemesis, Bronson) have both been cast in Fury Road.  Now, as interesting as that casting is everyone is still anxiously waiting to find out if Mel Gibson will reprise his role as Mad Max. When Director George Miller was asked about this he was vague to say the least, “It could be Mel, it could be anyone.”

Whether Gibson is involved or not I’m left wondering if this particular film needs a sequel »

Charlize Theron In Talks to Join 'Mad Max: Fury Road'

29 October 2009 11:49 PM, PDT | Celebrity Mania | See recent Celebrity Mania news »

Charlize Theron is a step closer to star in "Mad Max: Fury Road", the fourth installment of "Mad Max" film franchise. According to Variety, the actress is in negotiations to play the female lead character in the 2011 movie.

Beside Charlize, "Black Hawk Down" star Tom Hardy is also in talks to star opposite the "Hancock" beauty. If he reaches the deal with Warner Bros. Pictures, he will portray Max Rockatansky, the hardened ex-cop in a future beset by gas shortages and marauding gangs. The character was played by Mel Gibson in the previous three films.

Director George Miller has announced that "Mad Max: Fury Road" will start shooting August 2010 in Australia. Beside taking the helmer duty, George will also produce the film along with Doug Mitchell and pen the script. So far, story details of the movie have been kept under wraps. »

No Sign of Mel! Charlize Theron to Star in "Mad Max 4"

29 October 2009 4:58 PM, PDT | Manny the Movie Guy | See recent Manny the Movie Guy news »

Charlize Theron is set to star in the fourth installment of the "Mad Max" franchise called "Fury Road."

The actress will be working with producer-director George Miller and production is set to start filming next August in Australia.

British actor Tom Hardy from "Black Hawk Down" will co-star with Theron. Warner Bros. is set to distribute "Mad Max: Fury Road."

Hhhmmmmm, will you even watch this sequel when it comes out? As I've said before, a "Mad Max" film without Mel Gibson is like an "Indiana Jones" movie without Harrison Ford!

'Prince Of Persia: Sands Of Time' Trailer Detailed

29 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Jerry Bruckheimer's upcoming game-to-movie translation of "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time" is the next great hope for adaptations of this sort. Video games have a spotty history in the world of cinema. In fact, that's probably a generous characterization. While a few have certainly made money, none have yet achieved that rare parity between critical and box office approval.

Bruckheimer's "Persia" has a shot though. The mega-producer has a great track record with event blockbusters: the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, two "Bad Boys," "Black Hawk Down," "Beverly Hills Cop" and a string of Michael Bay-helmed hits, including "Armageddon," "The Rock" and "Pearl Harbor." Okay... maybe not so much with "Pearl Harbor." Now we've got the latest on "Prince of Persia," in the form of a detailed runthrough of the as-yet-unreleased new trailer for the movie, which »

Red Carpet: Underworked, Overworked, Erratically Co-Worked

27 October 2009 4:30 PM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Did you miss red carpet lineup? Too bad, it's back anyway! Here's a random sampling of celebrities who've been working the red this past week. As always, it's chosen based on who I wanna talk about.

I didn't used to think much of Eva Green, who was looking smashing in movie star red in London for the premiere of her new film Cracks, but two things changed my mind. First, her chemistry with Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and two, the shot of her flying through the air in The Golden Compass. I'm sad we'll never see more of witchy Serafina Pekkala. The further we get away from that movie the more I'm bummed that it didn't quite work. The book was so terrific but studios and filmmakers should never take on source material that's bolder than they are (this is one of the many reasons that Peter Jackson's »

Sam Worthington in running for lead role in Mad Max 4

26 October 2009 12:29 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

A Fourth Mad Max movie is finally about to get moving Down Under.

Director George Miller has hinted that the actor chosen to play Mel Gibson's lead role is likely to be native to Australia.

Online speculation suggests that the part will go to Sam Worthington (pictured), the Aussie star of Terminator Salvation and upcoming films Avatar and Clash of the Titans.

The other name that has cropped up in rumours is Tom Hardy, who is British. He made his film debut in Black Hawk Down, starred in this year's Bronson and has a role in Christopher Nolan's upcoming Inception.

Hardy also appeared on TV in crime thriller The Take and this August's adaptation of Wuthering Heights.

Mad Max 4: Fury Road is to start filming in Australia in late 2010, with Charlize Theron set to co-star. It will create 540 jobs and generate millions of dollars for the local movie industry, »

'Mad Max 4' May Star Sam Worthington

25 October 2009 9:25 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Recently E! Online reported that director George Miller (Mad Max) is hoping to cast British actor Tom Hardy (Black Hawk Down, Band of Brothers) to play a young "Mad" Max Rockatansky in the forthcoming 'Mad Max' movie, which will mark the fourth film in the series.

Rumors are swirling, however, that Australian Terminator star Sam Worthington is more likely to get the part, and according to Australia's Daily Telegraph, with Charlize Theron likely to co-star. It's been reported that Miller wants Theron for the female lead; all of this, naturally, being subject to studio approval.

Meanwhile, the Telegraph is reporting that the new movie will be called 'Mad Max 4: Fury Road' and is set to begin filming in Sydney.

So who should take over the role originated by Mel Gibson? Our vote would be for Worthington—he has the look, the grit...and the acting chops, all »

Direct From Down Under, Pics and Video With George Miller Talking Mad Max: Fury Road

25 October 2009 3:16 PM, PDT | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

George Miller is getting pre-production underway for the epic return of Mad Max in “Fury Road”, set for principal photography in summer 2010. George seems unsure yet about who he’s going to cast but he probably has a good idea. Folks in the running include Sam Worthington (everything), Jeremy Renner (Hurt Locker) and recently the word was that Tom Hardy (Black Hawk Down, RockNRolla) was a possibility. Charlize Theron has also been mentioned for a part, perhaps as a female version of Max. The Australian Broadcast Company had an interview with George Miller where he talked about the year it was going to take to design and build the cars and the scope of the film (big, bad, uncharted). George Miller Moving Forward With Gibson-less Mad Max 4

23 October 2009 4:13 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

There has for the past many years been talk of a fourth Mad Max film, either in live action format, or as an anime. Now it seems the live action one has become the winning choice, as George Miller is moving forward with the movie and looking to cast people for it. For the role of "Mad" Max Rockatansky, however, Miller has ditched the possibility of seeing Mel Gibson return. So fuck this movie. A Mad Max film without Mad Max isn't something I'd like to see, and unlike other franchises, I don't see someone replacing Gibson as a very good choice. Mad Max is not James Bond and neither is he Jack Ryan, he cannot be replaced. There is only one Mad Mel. Miller doesn't agree with me though, and is looking for his replacement in the actor Tom Hardy, who has previously had the lead in Bronson and »

Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron Rumored for 'Mad Max 4'

22 October 2009 2:08 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

It appears that director George Miller might be moving ahead with Mad Max 4 without Mel Gibson, the man the series helped transform into one of the world's biggest movie stars. Of course, Gibson only works when and how he wants to (he was already one of the shrewdest investors in show business before he had hundreds of millions from Passion of the Christ), so even if Miller wanted him to return, Mad Mel sure doesn't need to.

But the decision is apparently to go back to the beginning of the apocalypse, with a younger Max Rockatansky. E! Online writes that Miller is zeroing in on Tom Hardy, a British actor probably seen most by Us audiences in Black Hawk Down or Band of Brothers. Charlize Theron might also sign up as the female lead.

Is going with Hardy a good move? Well, there are probably bigger names Miller could grab, »
