Mark Strong on how Avatar will influence John Carter of Mars

50 minutes ago | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Mark Strong has now successfully made the transition from British television drama to the Hollywood film world with upcoming roles in Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass, Robin Hood, The Eagle of the Ninth and also John Carter of Mars.

The Disney project John Carter of Mars, directed by Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Wall-e), is based on Edgar Rice Burroughs' books and tells the story of a Civil War soldier mysteriously transported to the red planet where warring races vie for control.

Strong has spoken about the character he is playing and also about how James Cameron's game-changing motion capture technology in Avatar will have an impact on the way John Carter is made.

Strong explained: "I play a character called Matai Shang and he is the ruler of a group of people called the Ferns who are like the old Olympian Gods. They exist....people aren't really sure if they exist, …

Films Of The Decade – Alex’s List

18 December 2009 4:15 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

10 years is bloody ages in film terms. To narrow it down to my ten favourite films of the decade was no easy task. Even now I look at my list and can’t help but think…where the hell is Gladiator? Why didn’t I include any Lord Of The Rings films? What about The Dark Knight? Damn, what about The Lives Of Others, Pan’s Labyrinth, Finding Nemo, Downfall, No Country For Old Men? All of those films are incredible candidates and on another day they might have made it. The truth is no self-respecting film buff will ever be able to narrow down 10 films to fit a list and not have it change every so often.

One day my opinion of the best film of all time will be Seven Samurai the next day it will be Apocalypse Now and the day after that it might be Night Of The Hunter. …

Bob Dylan And Penelope Cruz In A Vintage Daily TwitPic

18 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Y'all know Roger Ebert, right? Noted film critic from Chicago. Used to be on TV. Well Mr. Ebert's been around quite a bit, working the scene, schmoozing with celebrities, hitting the festival circuit and so on. Yesterday, he apparently took a dive into his archives and dug out this little gem of an image for today's Daily TwitPic.

Hit the rewind button to the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. It wasn't exactly a magical year for movies, with hits like "X2: X-Men United" and "Finding Nemo" balanced by the latter two "Matrix" movies, "Terminator 3" and the third "Lord of the Rings" movie (let's face it-- that one kind of drags on a bit). There was also "Masked and Anonymous," a little independent film written by and starring Bob Dylan and an ensemble cast that included, among others, Penelope Cruz. It wasn't very good. Ebert himself gave it only half a star. But …

Mark Strong Praises John Carter of Mars Director

17 December 2009 1:15 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The casting process is still underway for two-time Academy Award-winning director Andrew Stanton's live-action John Carter of Mars adaptation, but two of the principal actors have already commented on the "mind-blowing" pre-production designs. Back in October, Willem Dafoe, who will portray Tars Tarkas, a four-armed, nine-foot-tall Martian, used the phrase to describe "the designs and things."

And in a recent interview with CinemaBlend, actor Mark Strong used the same phrase when discussing the storyboards. He also spoke very highly of Stanton, whose previous movies include A Bug's Life, Finding Nemo, and Wall-e.

[Stanton's] a genius. He's such a good storyteller. When I met him and he showed me the storyboards, the ideas for the sets and the designs for the characters, it's just absolutely mind-blowing. I can't wait to get involved with it. I said to him, how do you feel about live action? And he said it's going to be easy. …

Mark Strong on John Carter Of Mars, Kick-ass, and Ridley’s Scott’s Robin Hood

16 December 2009 10:34 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Earlier today, I got to speak on the phone with the great actor Mark Strong (IMDb resume), who plays the villainous Lord Blackwood in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes.  Due to our conversation covering so much ground on not only Holmes, but all of the other projects he’s involved with, I decided to break up the interview into two parts with tonight’s section covering what Strong said on Andrew Stanton’s John Carter of Mars, Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass, and Ridley’s Scott’s Robin Hood.

Trust me when I say, if you are interested in any of the three films I just mentioned, you will want to read what Strong said after the jump:

For fans of John Carter, Strong says he plays Matai Shang and “over the course of the 3 movies that they’re envisioning making, and I’ve seen the synopsis of the 2nd and 3rd, …

Roy Disney's death today was big news in Twitter-Wood, where a lot of folks have been affected by his work and commitment to animation over the course of their careers. It's certainly appropriate that "Toy Story 3" director Lee Unkrich was among the first to post his condolences.

And speaking of animation, Danny DeVito made it onto the guest list for the "Avatar" premiere tonight, and took a picture of his excitable foot to prove it. His "Twins" co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger posted

pic, too, from over in Copenhagen where he's meeting with folks for the U.N. Climate Summit. You can click through all of those tweets after the jump where you'll also find out who may have cut actress Jenna Stern off and which musician/director is working on a new FunnyorDie.com sketch. 'Dexter,' 'Avatar' And Eli Roth's Car Test In Today's Twitter-Wood

14 December 2009 4:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

The "Dexter" season finale was one of the most tweeted about of the year, and Twitter-Wood had most a before post from actor John Lithgow and an after reaction from Jessica Simpson waiting in the feed today.

Simon Pegg, meanwhile, checked out "Avatar" and posted his predictions for the "Star Wars" franchise based on what he saw. And speaking of assumptions based on seeing things, I indulged in three retweets from Eli Roth today, which you'll find were totally worth as you see him explain "The Office" actress Mindy Kaling's reaction to his aging automobile and how he uses it to test people he meets. You can read that after the jump alongside a pic of a kind who looks nearly identical to Russell from "Up" and a shot of Tom Felton from the British Comedy Awards last night. This decade’s film: 2000-2004

14 December 2009 8:08 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Pottermania, Tolkein-mania, Twilight-mania…it’s fair to say that the noughties have been a strong one for different kinds of mania. Moreover, it’s also been the time for some pretty awesome movies. 2000 marked a particularly promising start: American Beauty, the directorial debut from Sam Mendes was a unique critique on the American dream that attracted widespread acclaim, being nominated for 8 Academy Awards and winning 5; including Best Picture. His next project, Road to Perdition proved this success to be no fluke. Apparently this was a good time for new directors, as further evidenced by Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides, and Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich. Not that the decade was limited to low-budget concept flicks. Box office-smashing comic book adaptations became the name of the game; ranging from the great (Spider-Man, X-Men and Hellboy), to the not so much (Daredevil and Fantastic Four). It became (almost) socially acceptable …

Jack Black & Illumination Entertainment Invest in Cryptozoology

12 December 2009 8:37 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Animation films, whether it’s the new school CGI or old school hand drawn, have always been popular with kids of all ages and in recent years, have become fun for adults to watch as well; so, it’s no surprise to read a story over at Variety announcing a new CGI feature film involving Jack Black.  Writer Jason Micallef pitched an idea to Illumination Entertainment which is an extension of Universal headed by Chris Meledandri.

Micallef’s pitch in set in the world of Cryptozoology, which is the study and search for unknown, yet often talked about, animals or beings. My guess is it will include “monsters” like the Yeti, Sasquatch, Bigfoot, The Loch Ness Monster and maybe even mermaids or dragons. Black, who at one time was thought to be voicing a character, will now only be producing with business partner Ben Cooley via their production company Electric Dynamite. …
