Five Actresses Who Should Play the Black Cat in Spider-Man 4, And Three Who Shouldn’t

18 November 2009 9:48 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

If you read a lot of movie blogs, chances are that you've seen plenty of suggestions about this week's top rumor, the question of who should play The Black Cat in Spider-Man 4. You can throw all of those suggestions out the window. Because as you know, it isn't worth reading until we weigh in on the topic. And with that, I would like to suggest our own list of ladies who should be wearing tight outfits and sneaking into NYC banks. Initially the rumor was that Wedding Crashers starlet Rachel McAdams would be slipping on a tight cat burglar outfit and playing Felicia Hardy -- the noble, sweet and oh-so-dangerous villainess who once captured the heart of Spider-man. But that was squashed as an "internet rumor." As well, there has also been word that Julia Stiles has read for the part. But nothing is certain for director Sam Raimi, as …

Zhang Ziyi's Next Film Will Be Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

5 November 2009 9:48 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Though Zhang Ziyi (or Ziyi Zhang depending on who you talk to) is a huge star in the Chinese box office, her starpower in the United States is still growing. After finding a wide audience as a villainous vixen in Rush Hour 2, and critical and awards acclaim with Memoirs of a Geisha, THR reports she has found her next English language film Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Wayne Wang will be directing from a script he co-wrote with Michael Ray, set in 19th century remote China, which revolves around the lifelong friendship of Lily and Snow Flower and their imprisonment by rigid cultural codes of conduct for women. Zhang is also producing the film which is not only Wang's first film to be shot in China, but also the first in partnership with Wendi Murdoch, the China-born wife of News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch. The Perth model, who had uncredited parts in The Fast And The Furious and Rush Hour 2, is believed to have been beaten and suffocated by her boyfriend Brian Lee Randone, who she lived with in Los Angeles. New Photos of Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan at ‘G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra’ Los Angeles Premiere

29 August 2009 1:27 PM, PDT | Channing Tatum Unwrapped | See recent Channing Tatum Unwrapped news »

Channing Tatum's new action film 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' had a great opening and is already breaking records. It made over $22.3 million on Friday, had the biggest opening day in August for a non-sequel film beating 2002’s ‘Signs’ ($20.9 million), the second-highest opening day for a Stephen Sommers film behind 2001’s ‘The Mummy Returns’ ($23.4 million), and the third highest opening for an August release behind 2007's ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ ($24.7 million) and 2001’s ‘Rush Hour 2’ ($23 million).

While I'm working on the behind-the-scenes post for the Los Angeles premiere of the film, I thought I would go ahead and share some of Chan and Jenna's gorgeous press photos with you all from the last stop in the world-wide press tour. You can check out a ton of new photos in the slideshow below...

G.I. Joe has explosive power at the box office

10 August 2009 4:23 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

New action movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra rose through the ranks to command the international box office with just over $100million on its opening weekend.

The film, directed by Stephen Sommers and based on Hasbro's action figures (known as Action Man and Action Force in the UK), took $56.2million in North America and $44.1million elsewhere, reports Variety.

Paramount aimed for international appeal by following the comic book adaptation of G.I. Joe, which includes operatives from outside the USA, and by setting the story in several overseas territories. It also featured an international cast.

In the USA, G.I. Joe scored the fourth-best opening of all time for an August release after The Bourne Ultimatum ($69.3 million), Rush Hour 2 ($67.4 million) and Signs ($60.1 million).

As I reported earlier, the studio decided not to screen the movie to mainstream critics after Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen did exceptionally well …

GI Joe Dominates Weekend Box Office

9 August 2009 8:30 PM, PDT | WorstPreviews.com | See recent Worst Previews news »

"GI Joe: The Rise of the Cobra" grossed an estimated $56 million domestically and $44 million internationally for a $100 million worldwide opening weekend. The debut is the fourth highest August openings of all time. The record for August was set in 2007 by "The Bourne Ultimatum" with $69.3 million, while "Rush Hour 2" kicked off with $67.4 million in 2001, and "Signs" with $60 million in 2002. All ended up with more than $220 million, but none of them had a massive $175 million budget like "GI Joe." Columbia Pictures pulled in older women with "Julie and Julia," which opened to $20.1 million and taking second place this weekend. The thriller "A Perfect Getaway" saw only modest business during its opening. The $14 million film grossed an estimated $5.8 million from 2,159 theaters to come in seventh place. Make That "G.I. Dough!"

9 August 2009 10:15 AM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

If you thought bad buzz and bad reviews would take the pop out of the popcorn-picture debut of a 1980s toy icon, you forgot one thing: It's G.I. Joe, man! G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra ruled the weekend box office with a $56.2 million debut, its studio estimated. Meryl Streep and Amy Adams' Julie & Julia looked big in its own right with a $20.1 milion take, while Judd Apatow and Adam Sandler's Funny People fell flat—and all the way from first place to fifth place, with a $7.9 million gross. Drilling down into the numbers: • G.I. Joe's take is the fourth-biggest ever for an August opener, per Box Office Mojo stats. Only The Bourne Ultimatum, Rush Hour 2 and Signs …

GI Joe Friday Box Office Soars

8 August 2009 8:14 PM, PDT | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Paramount's decision to bypass "stuffy" film critics and show advance press screenings of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra to "fanboy" online outlets exclusively is, thus far, paying off with big box office returns. Rise of Cobra scored an estimated $22.3 million on its opening Friday including Thursday night sneak preview screenings. That number is good enough for the highest non-sequel August opening of all time. Saturday and Sunday performance during an opening weekend typically surpass Friday numbers (films like Bruno being the exception) which puts GI Joe on pace to surpass $60 million. It is officially on the hunt to chase down the two highest August weekend openings, The Bourne Ultimatum's $69.3 million and Rush Hour 2's $67.4 million. Critics have begun to lay into GI Joe knocking its Rotten Tomatoes score down to 38%. There is clearly enough positive buzz coming out of theaters, especially from young males, to drive …

Brett Ratner Will Not (Or Maybe Will) Direct Another X-Men

5 August 2009 4:32 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The X-Men franchise was on a real streak until Brett Ratner replaced Bryan Singer for X-Men: The Last Stand. While plenty of X-Men movies are in the works, including a X-Men Origins: Wolverine sequel, a Deadpool spin-off, X-Men: First Class, and possibly X-Men Origins: Magneto, no X-Men 4 has been announced. Singer has hinted at a return to the franchise, while Ratner told MTV that he won't direct another X-Men ... and then quickly ammending that he might:

The thing with the X-Men universe is, I feel like I've already done it. Certain things I would go after, and certain things only if the script is great. First Ratner feels like he's "done it," then he says "only if the script is great." Don't forget, this is the director of all three Rush Hour movies. Clearly, sequels are not an issue:

I heard a rumor that they were going to do a …

Remembering Michael Jackson through movies

26 June 2009 3:20 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

Here at Boxwish, we would like to join the millions and millions of people across the world in expressing our sadness at the passing of Michael Jackson at the age of 50. The King of Pop, as he was so aptly christened by long-time friend Elizabeth Taylor, contributed so much to the world of music providing us with a cherished legacy of songs that will live long in our hearts and on our iPods. However, rather than repeat the many tributes paid to the star by his friends, family and fellow celebrities or to rake over his many years in the spotlight, we’re honouring Mj with a Boxwish-style celebration that remembers his best movie moments.

Best starring role

Taking the music video from afterthought to true art form, Michael Jackson worked with many of Hollywood’s top directors such as Spike Lee (“They Don’t Care About Us”), John Singleton

Michael Jackson: Life Tribute (1958-2009)

25 June 2009 11:13 PM, PDT | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

No matter what your thoughts about Michael Jackson are, no one can deny that the man was a legend in his own right. Dubbed the King of Pop, the iconic Michael Jackson has been entertaining the world since the 1960s. He was a director, a composer, a musician, a singer, a dancer, an actor, a producer, and most importantly, the inspiration to countless millions. The word "triple threat" does not even begin to describe the often misunderstood superstar. On August 29 of this year, Michael would have been celebrating his 51st birthday. Sadly, Michael Jackson passed away today at the age of 50, but he leaves us with a half-century of genuine compassion and good deeds that have helped to shape the world we now live in. The Life of Michael Jackson Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana (an industrialized suburb of Chicago) in 1958. He inherited his musical gene from his father, …

On June 2nd, it was announced that Summit Entertainment was bringing on Jeff Nathanson, writer of the screenplays for several popular films such as Rush Hour 2, Rush Hour 3, The Terminal, Catch Me If You Can, and director of The Last Shot and story-writer behind Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. ‘Kingdom of the Crystal Skull’ Writer Tapped for Houdini Film

4 June 2009 12:05 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

In March, Screen Rant reported that Summit Media had acquired the rights to the controversial Houdini biography, The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero.

At the time, Summit Media indicated they wanted to produce a more action-oriented story about Harry Houdini, featuring the famous magician as an Indiana Jones-style adventurer. Given Summit’s vision for the film, it is unsurprising to report the company has tapped Jeff Nathanson to write and direct the Houdini movie.

Nathanson, who most recently penned Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, also wrote the screenplays for Brett Ratner’s Rush Hour 2 and Rush Hour 3. Considering that the plot of The Secret Life of Houdini revolved around the magician’s alleged work as a British spy, it is good to see someone experienced in the action genre helming the picture. Of course, Nathanson …

Jeff Nathanson Helming Summit’s Houdini

2 June 2009 9:42 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Jeff Nathanson has signed to write and direct the adaptation of William Kalush and Larry Sloman's Harry Houdini biography The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America's First Superhero for Summit Entertainment, report the trades. The book, published in 2006 by Atria Books, made waves at the time for insinuating that Houdini was a spy for Britain and was asked to be an adviser to Czar Nicholas II's court in pre-revolutionary Russia. The book also portrayed the master escape artist and magician as a debunker of con artists who pretended to be spiritualists, leading to the theory that his death was caused by the spiritual movement as payback. Summit, hoping to capitalize on worldwide recognition of Houdini's name while potentially launching a franchise, is looking to take a more action-adventure tack -- akin to the one taken by the upcoming Guy Ritchie-Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes movie. …

20 Years of Summer Movies, A Love/Hate Relationship

7 May 2009 10:00 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

With the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, the 2009 summer movie season has begun. A cursory glance at the upcoming slate of summer releases looks pretty weak this year, but I’m not here to look ahead. Instead, I noticed that we’ve reached the twenty-year anniversary of the “true” summer movie age. Sure, Jaws and Star Wars were the godfathers of the movement, and the close-following summers since that time often saw two or three big releases looking to cash in on the popcorn-munching crowd, but it was 1989 when the summer movie calendar started to become bloated. The large number of crowd-pleasing titles (and bevy of sequels) included the following: Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Batman, Ghostbusters II, License to Kill, Star Trek V, Lethal Weapon 2, The Abyss, Honey I Shrunk the Kids and, to a lesser extent, The Karate Kid: Part III. So on the Platinum Anniversary of the summer flick phenomenon, …

Top 7 Bromance Film Duos of the Past Decade

26 March 2009 9:18 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Bro-mance. (n., adj., v.)

1. Love between two heterosexual dudes that soars past regular friendship and does an intimate waltz around the line of platonic-ness

2. An alternative type of romance that, while it may at times be obstructed by women, will be rooted solely in the strong bond between two men

3. More than just friends…but not in that way

This list has been made in honor of the hilarious I Love You, Man, (go see it now!!!) but the truth is that the art of the bromance has actually existed for thousands of years; (maybe starting at Cain and Abel … or not). This special relationship has been continued by many great figures of cinema (like Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa), and the recognition continues to this very day. In these new times where “bro” is replacing the word “dude”, and as various words of “bro-cabulary” begin to assimilate themselves into our daily vernacular, …

Eurozone: Rewind on Jean-Michel Bernard

Today on Eurozone, I'm going to bend the rules a little. I'm not going to talk about an European movie, but you get to hear about French composer Jean-Michel Bernard, a frequent collaborator of Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind). They worked together on The Science of Sleep and completed the picture Be Kind Rewind in 2008. This most unusual picture premiered in the 2008 Sundance film festival and since then found wider distribution as well. The picture stars Mos Def, Jack Black and Danny Glover as the residents of Passaic, New Jersey.

Elroy Fletcher (Glover) runs a video store which fights an uphill battle against a larger chain and DVDs as well. When Elroy leaves his store to Mike (Mos Def), hilarity ensues as all the tapes are erased in a freak accident. In order to save the shop's reputation Mike and his friend Jerry (Black) shoot new pictures …
