When a multi-million dollar diamond heist leaves two murdered victims in its wake -- along with the body of one of the slain robbers -- curious Detectives Goren and Eames chase down blind alleys, unaware that their quarry is a cold-blooded and manipulative master criminal. Eventually, the cops suspect that their killer has imposed his girlfriend on his gang and ponder if the murderous thieves have a mob connection that would permit them to quickly cash in on such a large haul of stones.

Detectives Goren and Eames sort through a palette of colorful characters when they probe the slayings of a museum curator and an art authenticator, and they soon discover evidence of copied masterpieces that makes an arrogant Austrian dealer their prime suspect -- but the key hinges on finding the elusive forger. When a pregnant woman who was struggling to stay clean from drugs is found slain, Detectives Goren and Eames search for her ex-junkie boyfriend whose tattered life is dominated by his wealthy socialite mother. While Captain Deakins (Jamey Sheridan) wants to hand off the seemingly open-and-shut case to the homicide cops, Goren protests that killing a pregnant woman deserves a more hands-on investigation -- and the detective soon finds a sticky web that extends to many dirty hands.

When a woman is found murdered in a hotel room with the same signature as an accused serial killer awaiting trial behind bars, Detectives believe it to be the work of a copycat. Considering that details of the case have been kept strictly under wraps, and the accused killer, Reddick, has had no visitors other that attorneys and psychiatrists, aids Detectives in limiting the suspect pool. Once Goran and Eames discover that Reddick is involved in a clinical study linking a brain lesion to rage killing, they grow to suspect that one of the doctors conducting the study committed the copycat killing, but find the reason shocking.

After receiving misleading phone calls, and discovering a severed brake line, A.D.A. Peter Bonham appears to be the target of a contract hit. When Bonham kills the hit-man, Gary Burke, in his wine-cellar, Goran and Eames set out to discover who hired him. All of the evidence uncovered by the Detectives seem to point directly at Bonham's own wife, a successful trial attorney. It doesn't take long after arresting her, however, for Goren to suspect that she is being framed, and why. The challenge facing the Detectives is proving it, while not tipping their hand to the real culprit.
