From Anthony Hopkins to Natalie Portman, Thor is picking up steam with a raft of castings, but how closely will the film stick to Stan Lee's 1962 comic?
Kenneth Branagh is a lucky man. Unlike the unfortunate director who will, eventually, be tasked with reviving the fortunes of Superman, Branagh is bringing to the big screen a superhero (Thor) with no movie precedent. The closest thing to the son of Odin who's popped up on film so far has been the hunky car mechanic who slightly resembled him in Chris Columbus's trashy 1987 comedy Adventures in Babysitting.
And Branagh seems to be making all the right moves. He's avoided reported studio pressure to cast a famous face – Josh Hartnett was said to be in the running – and instead plumped for the little-known Chris Hemsworth, who was Captain Kirk's dad in Star Trek for about five minutes. As everyone who saw Daredevil knows, »

This week, we're all about giving thanks for the people, projects and peripheral stuff that makes our jobs so much fun. After kicking things off with some words from comics legend Stan Lee about what he's thankful for this year, we heard from "Star Trek" duo J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine, "Inglourious Basterds" writer/director Quentin Tarantino (who told us about the comics that inspired his film), "Iron Man 2" actor Sam Rockwell and finally, "Green Lantern" and "Deadpool" star Ryan Reynolds.
And now it's my turn, folks.
In a wild year full of comic book movies of the blockbuster and not-quite-blockbuster variety, the introduction of some very unique new series, crossovers that remind us how fun big events can be and a host of other comics-related happenings, there's a lot to be thankful for in the comics scene. So, here are some of the things I'm giving thanks for »

Apparently Odin's chamber for 'Thor' wasn't the only Marvel movie peek Brian Michael Bendis got this week. He also says he saw "Iron Man 2." That must mean Jon Favreau's overtime editing hours are paying off. The film's director has been so busy during barbershop business hours lately that he's been forced to Flowbee his own haircuts.
In other Twitterverse news, Stan Lee completed a pitch for a new mystery program on Cartoon Network. Check out what he tweeted after the jump along with Kevin Smith's wish for "New Moon" watchers, Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim book update and Bill Willingham's daunting workload for the month. It's all in the Twitter Report for November 20, 2009.
@Brianmbendis Btw saw iron man 2 last night. don't ask me a god damn thing. I am sworn to secrecy! Just like to tell u I saw it. Enjoy 2012

Given his history of cameos, (Iron Man, Spider-Man, Hulk, X-Men, Daredevil, etc.) it’s not exactly shocking that Lee will be getting one in Thor. Here’s what the George Washington of Marvel Comics said to MTV about meeting with the film’s director, four-time Academy Award nominee, Kenneth Branagh:
“I had lunch with Branagh, [who's] the nicest guy in the world as well as the most talented… months ago, when he was first starting on the movie, he said he would get a cameo for me.”
There ya have it. In case you’re insane and want to know exactly when Stan Lee will appear in the background of the film selling hot dogs or whatever, he had this to say to those dogged MTV folks when pressed for details:
“I think he has more important things to think of at the moment with the movie — like who he »

The Warriors Three may be joining Anthony Hopkins as Odin in Kenneth Branagh's "Thor," but at least one writer would rather have seen Sean Connery play the Allfather.
Elsewhere, big names in comics turned out for "The Twilight Saga: New Moon" last night, including Kevin Smith, who compared his daughter's relationship with the franchise to his own experience with "Star Wars." Far more comics faces were gathered in New York, though, for the Spider-Man summit Fred Van Lente tweeted about yesterday. Dan Slott posted a pic from the group's Marvel-funded dinner. Check that out after the jump along with Gail Simone's first tweet from her Xbox 360, Steve Niles' reaction to last night's meteor shower and Matthew Sturges' Imogen Heap dilemma.
It's all in the Twitter Report for November 17, 2009.
@marcbernardin Nothing against Sir Anthony Hopkins, but if you're not gonna do Brian Blessed for Odin, you shoulda coaxed Sean Connery out of retirement. »

Stan Lee may be done with his "Iron Man 2" cameo, but "Thor" still awaits. He tweeted about his high expectations last night, including what it will take to get him to Asgard.
Meanwhile at the Marvel offices in New York, editor Axel Alonso posted a behind-the-scenes look at what you can expect to see in a bathroom there. After the jump, there's also Dennis Calero's design obervation about James Cameron's "Avatar," Edgar Wright's early memories of "Labyrinth" and Tony Harris on wrapping up "Ex Machina."
It's all in the Twitter Report for November 12, 2009.
@smilinstanlee Since many have asked, my Iron Man cameo is done and I'm waiting to do Thor. But I'n not goin' to Asgard unless they fly me first class!

Simon Pegg tweeted an impassioned appreciation for "V for Vendetta" today in honor of Guy Fawkes Day, proving that he has not forgotten the 5th November. Also not forgetting were Jill Thompson, Neil Kleid and a few other I couldn't fit in.
Jon Favreau, it seems, didn't have time to commemorate anything last night, as he was hard at work editing "Iron Man 2." If he was following Joe Quesada or Matt Fraction, however, he probably kept up on the game's details just fine. Scope out all of those posts below, along with a new Jim Lee page and Geoff Johns' mystery project that he wants to work with Greg Rucka on.
It's all in the Twitter Report for November 5, 2009.

According to Deadline Hollywood, Viacom's Nickelodean purchased the global intellectual property rights and merchandising rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Tmnt) in a deal estimated at $60 million. Nickelodean plans to develop a new CG-animated TV series starring the Turtles and release a new feature film of their exploits in 2012.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book was originally self-published in 1984 by creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird as a parody of popular comic books of the time, including Frank Miller's Ronin and Marvel Comics' Daredevil. The comic book spawned a tremendously popular cartoon series, multiple video games, countless toys, three live-action movies, and the 2007 Imagi Animation Studios' CG-animated movie, simply titled Tmnt.
Nickelodean plans to maintain a relationship with Playmates Toyes, Inc., the company that first manufactured and marketed Turtles toys and is responsible for much of the franchise's success throughout the years.

There was a rumor floated recently by CineFools that Vin Diesel had dropped out of xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. If you heard that rumor and freaked out, you can now turn red ’cause Diesel’s publicist emailed MTV and said it was untrue. This is exactly what was said in that email:
“I made a few calls on this and I can tell you that it is completely not true.“
The action-packed xXx franchise began with Diesel in 2002, when he played the extreme sports athlete-turned government operative, Xander Cage. xXx: State of the Union (2005) ripped Cage away from us and replaced him with Ice Cube’s Darius Stone. The third installment in the franchise is to be directed by Ericson Core, who brought us Invincible and was the cinematographer on Daredevil.
It was suspected the Deisel had dropped out of The Return of Xander Cage because director Rob Cohen, »

On November 10, 1969 in Everett, Massachucets a little girl was born to Kathleen and Joseph Popmeo. The proud parents named her Ellen Kathleen Pompeo; she is the youngest of six. Ellen’s mother passed away when Ellen was just four years-old of a painkiller overdose. Ellen’s father remarried shortly after and the family resided in Boston. Ellen was discovered working at SoHo Bar & Grill in New York City. Doing a couple of minor television roles helped Ellen to see she wanted to be a successful actress so she packed her things and moved to Los Angeles. In a meeting with Jake Gyllenhaal she expressed an interest in wanting to work with him and a few weeks later was cast in Moolight Mile playing Jake’s love interest. She also starred alongside Leonardo DeCaprio in Catch Me If You Can that year. In 2003, Ellen played Karen Page in Daredevil, with Ben Affleck, »

While this week's poll was a bit more subdued than last week's "Spider-Man 4" villain blowout, readers still crowded in to registered their opinion on which comic book movie they'd like to see with an "R" rating.
In the end, Marvel's "Merc With A Mouth" earned the most votes, but Deadpool was followed close behind by DC's "Main Man," Lobo. Possibly most interesting, however, was the fact that the third most popular option in the poll was a very clear "None of the Above."
According to 15 percent of Splash Page readers, the script and filmmaker outweigh any concerns over the intended audience for a film—which makes a lot of sense, of course. Read on for a look at how the numbers added up after all the votes were tallied.
Poll Results
Deadpool: 22%
Lobo: 19%
None - It Depends On The Script/Filmmaker: 15%
Wolverine: 10%
Ghost Rider: 8%
Batman: 8%
Daredevil: 6%

Frank Miller is regarded as a genius in the comic book world.
As a writer and artist, his work on Daredevil and Batman has gained great acclaim. His limited series Batman: Year One was among the inspirations for Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins movie in 2005.
He went on to create the graphic novels Sin City (adapted into a film which Miller co-directed with Robert Rodriguez) and 300 (also turned into a film, produced by Miller and directed by Zack Snyder).
After the release of Sin City, Miller was approached about making a film of The Spirit using the same gritty, film-noir style. It was his first solo project as writer-director and was released on the big screen by Lionsgate in December 2008, and on DVD/Blu-ray in the UK at the end of May this year.

I grew up loving all things Superman, but even as a lad of 13 I could tell that the villain in Superman IV -- Nuclear Man, created when Supes threw all the world's nuclear weapons into the sun -- was dumb. He had no personality. He didn't even have a name. "Nuclear Man" is what the closing credits called him, but no one in the film ever calls him anything. Rule No. 1 of being a supervillain: You must have a name. I cannot imagine any exceptions to that rule.
So Nuclear Man is probably my vote for the lamest villain in a superhero movie, but it's hardly a slam-dunk. He has a lot of competition. Arnold Schwarzenegger's campy Mr. Freeze in Batman & Robin is legendary. At the opposite end of the muscles scale, there's whiny Venom (Topher Grace) in Spider-Man 3 and emo-goth Blackheart (Wes Bentley) in Ghost Rider. And »

Last week, I asked readers which villain they'd like to see brawl with the ol' web-slinger in "Spider-Man 4," the next installment of Sony's "Spider-Man" movie franchise.
After all the votes were counted, Curt Conners' reptilian alter ego The Lizard narrowly edged out the psychopathic symbiote Carnage as the most-wanted bad guy for the next film. With a series of mentions in previous films establishing Connors' character, seeing The Lizard in "Spider-Man 4" certainly seems possible—but with a "Venom" spin-off green-lit, one has to wonder whether we'll see Carnage in "Spider-Man 4" or "Venom" first.
Read on for the full breakdown of the votes and a selection of reader comments explaining why they voted the way they did.
Poll Results
Lizard: 29%
Carnage: 26%
Mysterio: 10%
Venom (again): 8%
Electro: 7%
Kraven the Hunter: 7%
Morbius the Living Vampire: 4%
Shocker: 2%
Vulture: 2%

Stan Lee, the co-creator behind such Marvel figures as Thor, Iron Man, Daredevil and Spider-Man, has had cameos in just about anything and everything [1] coming out of Marvel with regards to feature films. However, that isn't enough for the godfather of comics. No, Lee now wants to reach for the sky and start expanding his choice of movie roles to those outside of Marvel franchises. It's time to go DC style! Lee came forward with his wishes in a Tweet on his Twitter account [2], where he stated: "Wouldn't it be cool if DC gave me a cameo in their next Batman movie! What are you waiting for? Start a letter-writing campaign!" Even though it is highly unlikely that he will start showing up in DC properties as well, he did do some work for the company back in the day. Still, it was nothing near the height of his work at Marvel, »

Stan Lee, the co-creator of such Marvel heroes as The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Daredevil, Spider-Man and the X-Men, has appeared in just about every Marvel film. In fact, directors have been coming up with fun ways to work in Lee's cameo into their films. Now, Lee has revealed via his Twitter account that he wants more screen time. But it's not bigger roles that he's looking for, it's to appear in more films. He wrote: "Wouldn't it be cool if DC gave me a cameo in their next Batman movie! What are you waiting for? Start a letter-writing campaign!" Lee is mostly known as the man behind Marvel, but he has done a bit of work with DC Comics as well. Probably not enough to deserve cameo roles, but I guess it doesn't hurt to ask. »

Because it would have been just too much information all at once, I didn't write about everything as part of yesterday's Marvel Comics clearance sale. To catch you up: Disney's buying Marvel so anything that happens after the expiration of existing options on specific characters at other studios would be all Disney, all the time. There could be some joint productions, I guess, but even Spider-Man, that Sony staple, will eventually wind up at Disney.
Therefore, Columbia and Fox are train to squeeze the life out of Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and Silver Surfer, all of which are due to receive sequels/reboots/whatever. And that will all happen in short order.
What we left out was an unrelated comment by former Marvel chief Avi Arad, who had plenty to say about the livelihood of the Marvel Universe. But he is also developing a new CGI version of Popeye, »
