Tom Waits to star in The Hobbit?

8 December 2009 3:21 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The gravel-voiced one is reportedly being considered for a role in the forthcoming film of Jrr Tolkien's novel. Our bet is that he'll play Smaug, the fire-breathing dragon

Will Tom Waits battle Bilbo Baggins? A "trusted" source working on Guillermo del Toro's production of The Hobbit claims that the singer-songwriter is up for a part.

Waits has acted before, in films such as Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Robert Altman's Short Cuts and Jim Jarmusch's Down By Law. But he has never played the kind of character you would expect to find in a Jrr Tolkien's novel. Though the role under consideration isn't clear, an anonymous source told Ain't It Cool News that Waits is near the top of del Toro's list. "As much as I'd like to say he's a lock, I'm told he's simply someone the production is talking about," claims the source, …

'Kites' to be released in Hindi and English

30 November 2009 9:11 AM, PST | The Bollywood Ticket | See recent The Bollywood Ticket news »

Hindi and English versions of the highly anticipated Bollywood film 'Kites' will be released next year in international markets, including the U.S.

The film is an intercultural love story, starring Indian actor Hrithik Roshan and Mexican actress Barbara Mori. It was directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Hrithik's father, Rakesh Roshan.

American filmmaker Brett Ratner—best-known for his films 'Red Dragon,' the 'Rush Hour' series, and 'X-Men: The Last Stand'—is currently editing the English version to appeal to Western audiences. Only the Hindi version, which has been completed, will be released in India.

The two versions were shot simultaneously during filming in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Los Angeles, and Mumbai.

The film's release has been repeatedly postponed, but it's now expected to hit theaters worldwide next summer.

There has been talk that Hrithik hopes to launch a career in Hollywood with this film. …

Birthday Suits, An Oscar For Ed!

28 November 2009 6:20 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Each day we're celebriting the birth of various cinematic persons. Can someone in Hollywood please give their Oscar to Ed Harris today? I mean, my god how long does he have to wait for that damn thing? The rest of today's Sagittarians are less easy to shop for. What could we give Jon Stewart, for example, that he doesn't already have?

Ed, Laura and Jon

1896 Lilia Skala, Oscar nominated actress (Lilies of the Field)

1923 Gloria Grahame, Oscar winner (The Bad the Beautiful)

933 Hope Lange, Oscar nominated actress (Peyton Place, The Young Lions, Death Wish)

1941 Laura Antonelli, Italian actress, sex symbol

1946 Joe Dante He'll always have Gremlins, such a great 80s picture.

1949 Alexander Godunov, like Baryshnikov, he was a Russian ballet star who defected to America and co-starred in movies. It didn't go quite as well. He never achieved anything close to Misha's level of fame though he made for a memorable screen presence (Witness, …

Joe Calzaghe has said that he would be happy to knock out Katie Price's partner Alex Reid if her ex-husband Peter Andre gave him a fee. Fall Frights: The Ring (2002; Film Review)

20 October 2009 12:48 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

In the spirit of Halloween '09, we're breaking out reviews (some new, some old) of some Fall Frights you may want to work into your monthly viewing.

Originally published, 10/25/2002

What were the chances?

The Ring at first seemed like one of the least promising projects of the Halloween film season: A U.S. remake of a Japanese cult classic that hasn’t been given a chance to prove itself Stateside, directed by a filmmaker whose résumé is made up of comedies. Yet The Ring stacks up as the most satisfying studio horror film of the fall season. Unlike, for handy example, Brett Ratner’s Red Dragon, Gore Verbinski’s movie honors its predecessor and recaptures what made it so effective while also giving the material its own stylistic identity, and adding new material that doesn’t compromise the whole or feel gratuitous.

The U.S. Ring has as spare a mood as the original, …

The Hannibal Lecter Anthology Blu-ray Review

12 October 2009 7:58 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Debuting twenty-three years ago with “Manhunter”, there have been five films chronicling the enigmatic and terrifying serial killer Hannibal Lecter.  Though many of us have seen the first three (which are included in this collection), they were previously unreleased on Blu-Ray format until this past month.  If you haven’t seen these films, you owe it yourself to see them at whatever cost, but the Blu-Ray versions don’t necessarily add anything spectacular to the series.  Though worth watching, this collection of films doesn’t differ much from the previously released versions, and I am still waiting for some sort of “Ultimate Collection.” Keep reading after the jump to see why.

Starting with the first film in the initial trilogy, “Manhunter” (directed by Michael Mann) stars William Peterson as Will Graham and Brian Cox as Hannibal Lecter.  Though they were probably right at the time, in retrospect, I don’t …

Secret Identity: Five Actors Who Could Play Captain America's Nemesis, The Red Skull

1 October 2009 9:28 AM, PDT | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

With the popularity of last week's "Who Should Play Captain America" poll and Secret Identity's Captain America casting call, it's only fair that Steve Rogers' greatest nemesis gets his turn in the Splash Page spotlight.

The Red Skull is one of Marvel's most loathsome villains, meaning that an actor capable of such a sinister performance is required for "The First Avenger: Captain America." We've already seen a classic Marvel rogue mishandled on screen in the form of Doctor Doom—going a similar route with the Skull would completely neuter the "Captain America" movie.

For a successful Cap flick, Marvel needs someone to faithfully bring the terrifying villain to life—and these five actors have exactly what it takes.

Ralph Fiennes: As Lord Voldemort He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named in the "Harry Potter" franchise, actor Ralph Fiennes has already portrayed one of popular culture's most iconic and prominent villains. He didn't land that role by chance, …

Diablo Cody Might Write Ratner's Long Awaited Playboy Movie

27 September 2009 5:50 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

It's been a few years since a biopic about Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner was announced with Brett Ratner (Rush Hour, Red Dragon) attached to direct. Last year there was even a rumor that Robert Downey Jr. was in very serious negotiations to take on the role of the father of the Playboy bunny. However, other than quick fleeting mentions of speculation it doesn't seem like there's been any real progress made towards going into production. However, Cinematical made a keen observation on Twitter when Hefner updated: "Meeting with Diablo Cody to talk about the Brian Grazer Playboy film today." Oh really, Hef? But the guys at Cinematical also noticed that the usually vocal Cody didn't seem to call attention to the meeting on her Twitter page. So is she re-writing a current draft? Will she craft a different story? Who knows!? This definitely seems like an interesting and unlikely …

The Hannibal Lecter Collection (Blu-ray Review)

26 September 2009 11:30 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

“It rubs the lotion on its skin.” “Now it places the lotion in the basket.” Anyway, enough of my usual at home internet surfing activities. I’ve got a review to write damn it, and write one I shall.

Freshly hitting store shelves and web retailers nationwide is MGM’s latest Hannibal Lecter Collection, now on Blu-ray, just in time for the Halloween and holiday season. Like the previous DVD collection of the same heading, this new collection features Manhunter (the first Thomas Harris adaptation featuring the now notorious Hannibal Lecter, then portrayed rather effectively by Brian Cox), Silence Of The Lambs (ushering the ever talented Sir Anthony Hopkins into the maniacal role of Lecter), and Hannibal now with picture and sound so stunningly clear you can almost smell Clarice Starling’s Evian skin cream and L'Air du Temps perfume.

While I’d like to tell you that this collection …

Review: 'Rose'

Rose

Jeff Smith & Charles Vess

Graphix, 140 pages, $10.99

Earlier this year, Scholastic’s Graphix imprint completed releasing the nine volumes comprising Jeff Smith’s delightful Bone. The full-color books are ideal entry points into graphic novels or even fantasy literature. Now, the prequel, Rose, is finally joining the library in a softcover color edition.

Rose is, of course, Gran'ma Ben, the strong, cow-racing elder figure introduced early in Smith’s saga. Her sister, Briar, is The Hooded One, an evil crone, but as we’re about to learn, they were once young and far more carefree.

Illustrated by Charles Vess, the story is very, very different from Bone, much more a cautionary tale and almost devoid of the humor that kept Bone such a great read. Instead, the book focuses on Rose and Briar, both in training to become leaders of Atheia. Rose is exceptionally strong but not at all focused, …

[DVD Review] The Shooter Series, Volume One: Brett Ratner

17 September 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Not long before Michael Bay poured acid down fanboy throats with his double whammy of escapist fertilizer, one name could be heard used with an equal amount of fervor: Brett Ratner. “The rat,” as he was affectionately dubbed by a cavalcade of enraged fanboys, had done a major disservice to the community in the form of X-Men: The Last Stand. Rumor of rushed rewrites and a hectic shooting schedule plagued the film and though Ratner’s entry opened with the biggest box-office take of the trilogy, The Last Stand was critically derided and universally cast out by most fanboys.

My own relationship with Ratner’s work skews on the side of shrewd criticism. I enjoyed Rush Hour 1 and 2, thought Red Dragon was effective if not particularly stellar and was one of the few people I know (aside from my Dad) who enjoyed Ratner’s oft-quoted critical and box office failure The Family Man. …

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: September 15, 2009

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed X-Men Origins: Wolverine I wish DVD and Blu-ray sales were more readily available, because it will be interesting to see what kind of business this title does. Fanboys seemed to hate this film across the board, so I can't help but wonder how many of them will buy it on the down low and hide it under their bed when their friends come over. I, for one, actually didn't think it was all that bad. It was, at the very least, entertaining. This isn't to say I think you should buy it, but it works as a one-time watch. What are the 25 Best Book to Film Adaptations?

10 September 2009 4:46 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

The Telegraph has posted a nice little list of what they consider to be the 25 best book to film adaptations and while most of the titles will likely not surprise you, perhaps the order in which they are placed will. Considering this is the Internet, the most discussed placement is sure to be The Lord of the Rings trilogy in the 25th spot while the Harry Potter filmed franchise comes in three spots earlier at 22. Unfortunately, I haven't read many of the books from this list, but I have seen all but a few of the films. I will say I am far more partial to Stephen King's "The Shining" than I was to Kubrick's adaptation and I hardly remember the Harry Potter books well enough to even say if I think they are great adaptations as much as I have simply enjoyed both the films and the books. …

eBay find: Anthony Hopkins’s screen-worn Hannibal Lecter prison top

28 August 2009 2:50 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

It can be hard to find something to wear when chowing down on some fava beans and enjoying a nice Chianti, but we think we’ve found just the thing up for auction on eBay – the prison top as worn by Sir Anthony Hopkins as iconic movie monster Hannibal Lecter. The liver-lovin’ cannibal doesn’t get much of a chance to shine in the style stakes in his various film outings, the greatest fashion flourish coming during his spell of Florentine freedom in Hannibal, and so often incarcerated (thankfully) he’s forced into prison uniforms and it’s an item from one such combo that we’ve sourced this week’s fantastic eBay find.

Admittedly, the orange boiler suit from 1991’s Oscar giant The Silence of the Lambs is more memorable and iconic, however we think this white tee from its prequel, 2002’s Red Dragon is just as menacing. A plain white crew-neck tee, …

Brett Ratner teams with Fame director on Blade Runner-style sci-fi epic

26 August 2009 7:54 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Director Kevin Tancharoen, who helmed last year's remake of 80s musical hit Fame as his first feature film project, is leaving behind lycra and legwarmers to venture into sci-fi territory.

Will we now see performing arts students dancing in the streets on top of spaceships? Probably not...

He is to make a sci-fi flick called Arcana, which is set up at Rat Entertainment and will be produced by Brett Ratner (director of Red Dragon, X-Men: The Last Stand and the Rush Hour series) and Jay Stern (a producer on Rush Hour 3). Universal will distribute.

Tancharoen (pictured right) told Moviehole: "Arcana is a unique blend of the graphic-novel backdrop - like Blade Runner - and shot like 300, and has a little bit of Warriors mixed in there, with a little bit of martial arts, so it's got a lot of crazy elements in there. It's going to be really cool. …

Are They Making Mortal Kombat 3?

Ever heard of Chris Casamassa? Probably not, but you may have seen him. He’s the martial arts master who played the role of Scorpion in the first Mortal Kombat movie and in a few episodes of Mortal Kombat: Conquest, the TV series.

Fortunately, he wasn’t part of the terrible sequel, titled Annihilation. Come to think of it, the vast majority of the cast didn’t make it back for the sequel…

Well, Casamassa will be back as Scorpion again… in another Mortal Kombat movie. Who knew?

Alex over at First Showing picked up on a story by the Sgv Tribune where they interviewed the martial artist/actor. Casamassa, who now instructs and is the president of Red Dragon Karate, revealed that he’s set to start shooting a third Mortal Kombat film this September. It was seemingly a general comment and they didn’t go into it at …
