Trivia:
The filtering of Chiyoko's life through film history allows the setting, characters, and the visual style of the film to change suddenly. Some of the scenes are reminiscent of Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock prints, while others evoke Akira Kurosawa movies (particularly Throne of Blood). Satoshi Kon has acknowledged the influence of Throne of Blood, but says that for the most part there are no specific references in his segments. Instead he drew on a vague general impression of the history of Japanese filmmaking and visual art for his different styles and stories; Kon insists that historical film was actually not a subject he had much familiarity with before he made Millennium Actress. He studied the settings and costumes carefully, however, and learned a lot in the making of the film, such as the history of the kimono.

Goofs:
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): There is a scene in which Chiyoko appears mounted on a carriage and dressed in Victorian-era dress, but this is never seen a magazine or poster, or any reference indicating that she could have been in a film of this type.

Disney Eisner and his crew both on their best day and in their wettest dream could and would never make a film as good as this or "Perfect Blue" or anything by Miyazaki. That's why they import it and put their name on it though...this way the prestige can rub off on them. Hey, something has to keep DisneyCorp at least semi-respected by the animation world and its fans.
This is a wonderful film with a rich and powerful story, combined with episodic and grandiose animation and "cinematography" that just keeps your eyes and mind glued to it at all times. Rent this. Buy this. Live this.
