Georgia
Opens: 2010
Cast: Val Kilmer, Andy Garcia, Rupert Friend, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Johnathon Schaech
Director: Renny Harlin
Summary: An American journalist, his cameraman, and a Georgian native get caught in the crossfire of the five-day Russia-Georgia conflict in August 2008, and then have to deal with their obligation to be impartial.
Analysis: A timely parable on war, or Hollywood propaganda filmmaking at its worst? Wherever it goes, especially in Europe and the former Soviet states, "Georgia" will cause a lot of talk and controversy as the incidents depicted are still so fresh in many's minds. Like all topics of the sort, it'll also have its strong supporters and detractors having opinions on the film long before a frame of footage is screened anywhere.
Shot on-location in Tbilisi, the project also marks a potential return to form for Finnish director Renny Harlin. Given the right material the skilled action director delivered three

With all the studio arm indie divisions closing shop, I'm crossing my fingers for the folks at Focus Features - they actually give a sh*t about filmmakers. We don't need to mention what happened with the parent company, and today's press release sort of camouflages the mediocre 2009 year that is still unfolding. - With all the studio arm indie divisions closing shop, I'm crossing my fingers for the folks at Focus Features - they actually give a sh*t about filmmakers. We don't need to mention what happened with the parent company, and today's press release sort of camouflages the mediocre 2009 year that is still unfolding. When you add filmmaker Henry Selick and Shane Acker's numbers and subtract Ang Lee's and Sam Mendes' box office grosses and all the P&A costs, I'm sure that Focus' "eighth profitable year in a row since their inception" is

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry
List # 1
By Alex Simon
When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.
1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah.

Mind the Gap: Designing for the In-Between Spaces

I figured I needed a theme for this blog. So I started kicking around the idea of exploring the "in-between space"--an area that has always interested me.
In animation, in-betweening refers to adding the frames between two images so that the movement appears smoother. The in-betweens are key in creating the illusion of motion. They are the blend between one state and another.
There's another term that's loosely used to talk about existing between different dimensions: "Two-and-a-Half D" (I originally was going to call this blog that--2.5 D--before self-consciously thinking that it looked too much like a bra size). Two-and-a-Half-d refers to an effect that plays with planes placed within a space. The parallax, lighting changes, and other cues that result from the movement make the flat visuals live in a world with depth. You might recall this technique in the animated sequences for The Kid Stays in the Picture.

Drew Barrymore And Justin Long Back Together

I'm not up on my celebrity gossip enough to know if Drew Barrymore and Justin Long are still dating-- they've been on-again, off-again too many times to count that. But I do know that they dated in real life, and real-life couples acting together after a break-up is about as uncommon as a Hollywood marriage lasting more than 5 years.
But Barrymore and Long are fearless, apparently, and will co-star in the romantic comedy Going the Distance, a movie that is already shaping up to look better than your average rom-com. Variety is now describing it as an "observational comedy," and it's directed by Nanette Burstein, who's made two very intelligent documentaries, American Teen and The Kid Stays In The Picture.
Oh, and according to People.com, Barrymore and Long have broken up. But maybe not for long?
