Talk Back: Series Premiere of ABC's "V"

4 November 2009 1:03 PM, PST | Televisionary | See recent Televisionary news »

They have arrived. You read my advance review of the pilot episode of ABC's sci-fi series V but now that the series has launched, I'm curious to see what all of you thought of the first episode. (You can also read my post-air thoughts on the first episode of V over at the Los Angeles Times/Show Tracker site.) Did you love the arrival scene where the Visitors descended on Earth and then broadcast their message of "hope" and "peace"? Did you think that Elizabeth Mitchell made a kick-ass FBI agent and single mom? Happy to (nearly) see a reunion between former Firefly co-stars Alan Tudyk and Morena Baccarin? Enjoying the Vs' use of propaganda and devotion in their arsenal? Liking the updated elements, such as the sleeper cells, human resistance force, and the fact that the Vs have been on Earth for decades already? Were you surprised by the »

V Season 1, Episode 1 Review: Pilot

4 November 2009 6:39 AM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

The original 1983 miniseries V is a tense, slow-building piece of science fiction that showed the creation of a fascist movement in the United States by the alien Visitors.

An allegory for the creation of the Nazi movement, the original V portrays humanity becoming divided by propaganda with some choosing to collaborate with the alien regime and others forming underground resistance cells. Rightly acknowledged as a classic of the genre, expectations have been high for this new "reimagining" that premiered on ABC this week.

On the surface much remains the same between remake and source. Both share the arrival of alien Visitors, promising technological salvation to humanity's problems. Each explores how the media can be manipulated to spread propaganda, why some choose to collaborate and how resistance movements come into being.

Where this reimagining departs from the original concept is in aspects of its execution such as its lightning-quick pacing, topical »

Review: V... It's the New X!

4 November 2009 2:19 AM, PST | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Ever since the original V TV miniseries hit the airwaves in 1983 (you can trust me, I was there ;-P), the letter v has been working it’s way up the ladder in popularity. After all, before that, all v really had to its name was V-Day and a crappy holiday where you try to see how many cavities you can give the object of your affection in one day.

It’s had some pretty stiff competition, though. A-f have always seemed to be pretty popular in the school grading system, while N and Y have made their fame through surveys. The most notorious letter of all, though, has to be X. After all, everything is cooler with an X!

As mentioned before, the letter v seems to be gaining more and more popularity. It helped spawn two V miniseries in the early 80s, followed by a TV show in the »

First Trailer for The Horror Comedy ‘Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’

3 November 2009 2:30 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Shaun of the Dead started a new trend of horror comedies that was once lost after the mainstream success of the Ghostbusters franchise in the late 80s. From there, films like Zombieland and Fido took the ball and ran with it. It was only a matter of time before the formula was used on something other than the zombie genre.

Enter Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, a new horror comedy in the works that puts the “teens killed by hillbillies in the woods” storyline on it’s head. The film shows what it’s like from the other end of the scale, and what if the hillbillies weren’t really all that evil.

Starring Firefly’s Alan Tudyk and Reaper’s Tyler Labine (what could become the American equivalent of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost), the film could help the genre mash-up of Horror Comedy grow some real legs, after Zombieland »

Critics Jump Aboard 'V,' But There Are Flaws

3 November 2009 12:11 AM, PST | AirlockAlpha.com | See recent Airlock Alpha news »

"V" premieres Tuesday at 8 p.m. Et, and although it's getting a start just in time for November sweeps, no one seems to care about the timing. But they do care about this new show starring Elizabeth Mitchell ("Lost"), Morena Baccarin ("Firefly"), Morris Chestnut and Scott Wolf. Here is a sampling of what critics are saying about Tuesday's episode. "Mitchell has never had a part so rich, one that allows her to play smart, sarcastic, tough and vulnerable," said Mark A. Perigard of The Boston Herald (review). "With her perpetually gleaming eyes, Baccarin is wonderfully otherworldly, and suggests a streak of malevolence." But the shows does have a few quirks, Perigard said. "As the hour progresses, there are a couple of smart twists," he said. "One quibble with the remake is that ... »

Joss Whedon Puts in a Bid for the Terminator Franchise!!!

2 November 2009 2:49 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

In case you haven't heard, the rights to the Terminator franchise are once again going to be up for grabs [1] when they are auctioned off later this month, and a number of studios are said to be interested including Sony, Summit Entertainment and Media Rights Capital. It's unclear what this will mean for the future of the franchise, but apparently big media corporations aren't the only ones hoping to get a chance to repackage and resell the robot apocalypse. Believe it or not, there are a few other interested parties out there, including one... Joss Whedon? In a somewhat humourous and irreverent open letter posted on Whedonesque [2] and Deadline Hollywood [3], the man behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse offers up a tidy sum of $10,000 for the franchise, and proceeds to give some of his ideas about what to do with it. As expected, there is at least one »

Joss Whedon Offers $10,000 For Ownership Of The 'Terminator' Franchise

2 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Word is running rampant today that the rights for the "Terminator" franchise are being sold off for a pretty penny. This isn't the first time we've heard about the impending "Terminator" sale, nor is it the first time such a change-of-hands has occurred — but it is the first time that "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "Dollhouse" creator Joss Whedon has made a power play for the franchise.

In an open letter, Whedon offered a tongue-in-cheek appeal for ownership of the "Terminator" property, claiming that he would gladly purchase the franchise for $10,000 as soon as today should his offer be accepted.

"The 'Terminator' story is as formative and important in our culture — and my pretend play — as any I can think of," wrote Whedon. "It's far from over."

The geek favorite listed a multitude of ideas he'd implement to resuscitate the fledgling franchise, including "Terminator... of the Rings," in which the »

Joss Whedon Offers To Buy ‘Terminator’ Franchise

2 November 2009 1:19 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

That Joss Whedon is a funny guy and one heck of a writer. His shows, including Firefly, Buffy, Angel and Dollhouse, are among the most favored by fans and, of course, we love his work here at The Flickcast. Now, with the Terminator franchise apparently up for sale (again) Whedon has made a modest proposal of his own to buy the entire thing in an open letter to those selling the franchise.

Among the items covered in this open letter are how much he offers for the franchise and what he would do with it if he got it. Its a funny and, in some cases, inspirational attempt at humor from a man who knows how to bring the funny.

Although, maybe he’s serious and thinks he would do a good job with the franchise? And, thinking about it a bit more myself, I think he would do a great job with Terminator also. »

Temp Trailer and Sales Art for Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

2 November 2009 1:02 PM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

While we don't typically like comedy slapped together with our horror around these parts, we'd be lying if we said that the new horror/comedy flick Tucker and Dale vs. Evil looked anything less than badass.

Just in time for Afm the new flick from Voltage Pictures, starring Alan Tudyk ("Firefly") and Tyler Labine ("Reaper") and directed by Eli Craig (The Tao of Pong), is sporting some sales art as well as a temporary trailer for you guys to dig on! Check it all out below!

Synopsis

In the vein of Shaun of the Dead, Tucker & Dale is a wild, wonky tale of two hillbilly buddies trying to survive their vacation in the woods when they are mistaken for killers by a gang of college kids. Our heroes valiantly save one of the college girls from drowning but are accused of wrongdoing. The chase ensues, not treating the students too well, »

‘Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’ Red Band Trailer

2 November 2009 12:36 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Horror and comedy are two of my favorite genres and just like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, I like when they are combined. Last month, Screen Rant writer Ross Miller did a series on horror films that were combined with other genres. One of those combinations was horror plus comedy and the movie he choose was Shaun of the Dead. Other great examples are the always popular Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness with Bruce “The Chin” Campbell.

Well today, courtesy of our friends at Bloody Disgusting, we have a new trailer for the upcoming horror/comedy film Tucker & Dale vs. Evil. If the film is half as funny as the trailer then I am really looking forward to seeing it. The movie stars Alan Tudyk (Firefly, Dodgeball) and Tyler Labine (Zack and Miri Make a Porno) as two redneck hillbillies that want to do nothing more than enjoy »

Joss Whedon Will Gladly Buy the Rights to 'Terminator'

2 November 2009 12:32 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

The rights to the Terminator franchise have only been up on the auction block for about as long as it takes Arnold Schwarzenegger to emerge naked from a time bubble, but a veteran Hollywood mogul has already expressed interest in taking the brand off the hands of the now-bankrupt Halcyon; and that vet is none other than Toy Story, Alien: Resurrection, and Titan A.E. screenwriter Joss Whedon (oh, and he created Buffy the Vampire Slayer and "Firefly"/Serenity, but I don't think anyone has ever heard of those).

Mr. Whedon took the time out of his busy schedule running his latest TV show, the Eliza Dushku starring "Dollhouse", to write an earnest letter to Halcyon making the case for why he's the right man for the job. And as with all things Whedon, his proposal has its fair share of the funny.

In it, he outlines the six possible directions he'd take the franchise, »

Exclusive: Nathan Fillion Says 'Dr. Horrible' Sequel Has A Title, Several Songs Written

2 November 2009 10:21 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Joss Whedon's online musical "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" not only broke new ground for Internet media, it also landed an Emmy in the short-format, live-action category of the annual awards. So, it was probably no surprise that the series already had a sequel in the works long before all the award talk began. Back in August, we got the scoop from Whedon himself—and now we have an update from one the project's stars, "Castle" and "Firefly" star Nathan Fillion.

"There are plans," Fillion told MTV News. "The media for the sequel has not yet been decided, but there is a title."

While Fillion couldn't spill on the proposed title for the "Dr. Horrible" sequel, he did say that Whedon and the rest of the "Dr. Horrible" creative team—Joss' brothers Zack Whedon, Jed Whedon and Jed's wife, Maurissa Tancharoen—already have a few of the songs written.

Must Watch: Tucker and Dale Versus Evil Trailer

2 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

The trailer needs finesse but, boy, does it work. In anticipation of the American Film Market, Voltage Pictures has unveiled a look at Tucker and Dale Versus Evil starring Alan Tudyk ( Firefly ) and Tyler Labine ( Reaper ) and directed by Eli Craig ( The Tao of Pong ). Tudyk and Labine are two rednecks pals who are mistaken for killers by your archetypal college kids who are vacationing in the woods. How they're "mistaken" is revealed in the trailer and it does elicit a few good chuckles. It's a Shaun of the Dead for the killer hillbilly sub-genre, basically. We're open to it. And even though we wish the best (a theatrical run) for films we're eager to see, but this seems ideal for Anchor Bay or even Ghost House Underground, if the latter wants to take a leap into... »

Joss Whedon Tosses Hat in the Ring for 'Terminator' Rights

1 November 2009 10:15 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

As we reported earlier today, Halcyon Holding Group will be auctioning off the rights to the 'Terminator' franchise later this month. The expectation is that it should net at least $60M...and several major studios and players have shown interest.

Plus one.

Buffy, Firefly and Dollhouse creator Joss Whedon says he's ready to take over this franchise as well, and he's got $10,000 to prove it. In an open — and very tongue in cheek — letter to Halcyon Holding Group, reproduced over at Deadline.com, Whedon promises he will write a check today to take the 'Terminator' rights off Halcyon's hands.

"No, you didn't miscount," Whedon says. "That's four -- Four! -- zeroes after that one. That's to show you I mean business."

Whedon goes on to describe exactly what he'd do if he were in charge of the franchise...

CinemaSpy's Week-End TV Recap (Oct. 31)

31 October 2009 9:30 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Two shows were out of the mix again last week, Fringe and Dollhouse, both of which will be absent this coming week as well.

Meanwhile, for the shows that did air first-run episodes this past week, the spotlight was on Thursday, which was a bit disappointing for ratings. Fox's airing of the World Series between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies dominated the airwaves, garnering a 10.6/17 share, according to Fast National ratings from The Nielsen Co. By comparison, even the reality juggernaut Survivor couldn't compete with America's favorite pastime, returning a 7.1/11 for its Survivor: Samoa iteration.

Both, however, finished well ahead of FlashForward, which is settling back down a bit. The ABC skein earned a 5.7 rating/9 share, matching the all time low it had back on Oct. 15. That's an eight percent drop from the previous week, and nine-and-a-half percent below its season average so far.

FlashForward remains the highest-rated network genre show, »

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: 'The Mentalist' and 'Castle,' tricks and treats

I love Halloween episodes. They’re less cheesy than Valentine’s Day drivel, and generally funnier than Christmas and Thanksgiving episodes (plus, we don’t have to deal with guest-star relatives). This All Hallows Eve week we got two gems: The Mentalist and Castle. Since y’all always say I give The Mentalist and Criminal Minds short shrift, I’ll start with the faux-psychic (particularly since there was no meeting of the Minds this week). Anybody who’s been watching procedurals as long as we have (I know you’re out there, McMillan & Wife fans) has to appreciate the occasional »

Promo, Photos & Synopsis – Castle 2.07 "Famous Last Words"

Is there anything better than Nathan Fillion?  If there is, I haven't found it yet.  He's just so awesome.  At everything.  Exhibit A: donning his old Firefly costume in the previous episode of Castle.  We like space cowboys too, Nathan.

On November 2 we get a new episode of Castle and we've got the synopsis, promo and promo photos to share with you below.

Am I going nuts or is the song for this promo video the same song that was used in Twilight during the vampire baseball scene?  Also, am I nuts for even knowing this?  The answer: yes.
