Clint Eastwood's murder mystery Mystic River, starring Sean Penn, Kevin Bacon, and Tim Robbins; Gus Van Sant's Elephant, about teen violence and starring mostly unknown young actors; and Vincent Gallo's biker drama The Brown Bunny, which Gallo wrote and stars in, are the only U.S. films among 22 selected to compete for the Cannes Film Festival's Palme d'Or this year. Only one British film was selected -- Peter Greenaway's The Tulse Luper Suitcase (in which Gallo appears, along with a raft of stars including Kathy Bates, Deborah Harry, William Hurt, Don Johnson, Madonna, Molly Ringwald, Isabella Rossellini, and Sting). Danish director Lars von Trier, who won the Palme d'Or three years ago for Dancer in the Dark, will compete again with Dogville, starring Nicole Kidman.
