Hate Christmas? Have We Got a Movie (or 6) for You!

16 hours ago | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

For most, Christmas is a happy time rife with warm family memories, selfless gift giving, gentle snowfalls, and the sharing of the season's goodwill tidings.

For others, Christmas is a time when you can't step into an elevator without being subject to the Muzak version of "O Holy Night." When going to your local pharmacy means being guilted into giving up your spare change by a guy with a bell who looks like he just got released from prison.

We've got 6 movie recommendations for those with a more cynical perspective of the season. They offer the chance to enjoy some seasonal cinematic joys with more edge and less good cheer. From German terrorists to singing skeletons, little green monsters to an alcoholic St. Nick, we've got all the bases covered.

To find out when these Bah Humbug selections are playing, check out our Holiday TV Movie Guide: The 12 Flavors of Christmas. »

Cameron Diaz Returns To Raunch As A 'Bad Teacher'

10 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Cameron Diaz can do sweet romantic comedies like "The Holiday" and tearjerker dramas like "My Sister's Keeper" and even the occasional period piece like "Gangs of New York," but her true calling has always been raunchy comedy. Now, to add to her gross-out work in "There's Something About Mary" and "The Sweetest Thing," the actress will star in Columbia Pictures' "Bad Teacher," according to Variety.

Jake Kasdan, who last gave us "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story," is directing the comedy, about a "foulmouthed, gold-digging middle-school teacher," who battles with another faculty member for dibs on a hot co-worker. The idea of a fought-over "model teacher" makes me imagine "Glee" star Matthew Morrison as the male lead, but that will never happen.

What makes "Bad Teacher" sound more appealing than, say, "What Happens in Vegas?" is that the script was written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, of TV's »

Cameron Diaz Is a Naughty Teacher

10 December 2009 1:44 PM, PST | Fandango | See recent Fandango news »

Remember how funny it was to watch Billy Bob Thornton play a nasty, foul-mouthed Santa in the film Bad Santa? Well, apply that same sort of concept to a middle-school teacher, then throw Cameron Diaz in the role. Variety tells us that Diaz will play a foul-mouthed gold digger in who, after being dumped by her boyfriend, competes against a rival colleague for the affections of the school's model teacher.   The raunchy comedy, which is actually called Bad Teacher, was written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who, apart from writing for The Office and penning the comedy Year One, are the duo assigned to bring back the Ghostbusters for a third installment. And honestly, while a lot of people will probably knock this casting choice, I'm of the opinion that Cameron Diaz is a wayyy...

Diaz Returns to Raunchy Comedy with ‘Bad Teacher’

10 December 2009 5:36 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

People who watched Cameron Diaz’s performance in Richard Kelly’s The Box may have forgotten where she comes from: a world of goofy comedies including There’s Something About Mary. I haven’t watched that film in quite a while, and that’s because it simply doesn’t hold up. Funny, sure. Classic? No.

Diaz is headed to bat at the comedy plate once more, though, in Columbia Pictures’ “raunchy comedy” Bad Teacher. Directed by Jake Kasdan (Walk Hard) and written by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the same Office writers who are supposedly grinding away at Ghostbusters 3, Bad Teacher has found an actress for its leading role.

The film (which is unrelated to the Billy Bob Thornton flick Bad Santa, by the way) centers on “a foulmouthed, gold-digging middle-school teacher who, after getting dumped by her boyfriend, competes with a colleague for the affections of the school’s model teacher. »

Ho, Ho, Whoa!: The 5 Worst Movie Santas

7 December 2009 2:24 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

It's the happiest time of the year ... once again. Rather than dole out the standard list of the best holiday classics to warm your heart, we prefer to shake things up a bit with our look at everyone's favorite bearded fat man, Santa Claus.

Now we all know that Edmund Gwenn was a wonderful Santa in Miracle on 34th Street, the only actor to take home an Oscar as St. Nick. And actors such as Ed Asner in Elf and David Huddleston in Santa Claus: The Movie have certainly done the red suit justice on the silver screen.

But what about those other Santas? The ones that took the legend of Santa in a different direction: Boozing, scaring, kicking, and even killing? Those are the ones we take a look at in Ho, Ho, Whoa!: The 5 Worst Movie Santas.

If you want to see these bad Santas in action, »

What's your favourite film to watch at Christmas?

1 December 2009 4:06 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

We need to fill the Christmas Eve spot on our film advent calendar. And that's where you come in …

Today we're launching our guardian.co.uk/film advent calendar, in which our writers pick which film they'd most like to snuggle down in front of after the Queen's speech.

But what would be your top choice? A surefire yuletide hit, like It's a Wonderful Life? Or a misanthropic classic, like Bad Santa?

Write us no more than 50 words on your choice and why you think it's perfect for the festive season and you could have pride of place on 24 December. Comments will be open until 8am on December 23, so be sure to check back on Christmas Eve to see if your choice made the final cut. Our own writers have already picked their choices, so I'm afraid if yours clashes with one of theirs, it probably won't be selected - so think outside the giftbox. »

Culture Warrior: Towards a More Thanksgiving-Friendly Cinema

26 November 2009 12:35 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I don’t know about your family, but in mine Thanksgiving is viewed largely as a warm-up drill for the Christmas season, a Christmas prequel if you will. At Thanksgiving I see, for the most part, the same extended family I end up seeing at Christmas, but for a far shorter duration of time. Whatever conversation I don’t have time to catch up on with my family over Thanksgiving I promise to continue over Christmas. Thanksgiving is when Christmas decorations are put up, when holiday shopping begins in full force, and when Christmas wish-lists are collected. Thanksgiving used to be the time when the first Christmas-themed movies of the year were released, but now movies like A Christmas Carol are released the first weekend in November in hopes of capitalizing over two months of manufactured Christmas spirit. Department stores and retail outlets have begun moving in unison with the trends of Christmas-themed Hollywood fare, putting »

Listen: This American Life Segment that Inspired Santa Wars, Movie to be Written by Mike White

19 November 2009 11:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Paramount Pictures has hired School of Rock screenwriter Mike White to script Santa Wars, a comedy based on the true story which appeared on This American Life in December 2008. The story, written by Joshuah Bearman, told of two rival factions that developed within a union of professional Santa Clauses, which resulted in a "Santa Claus civil war." White is best when put in the dark comedy arena, and this might be a perfect fit. This story is definitely more akin to Bad Santa than Elf. White's previous credits include Dead Man on Campus, Chuck & Buck, Freaks and Geeks, and The Good Girl. More recently, he's had a turn in more family-friendly territory with School of Rock and Nacho Libre, before making his directorial debut Year of the Dog. After the jump you can find more information about the original story that has inspired this feature film, and even listen to »

Exclusive: Producer Wyck Godfrey on Dead Space, Gears Of War, and Will Ferrell’s Everything Must Go

18 November 2009 11:07 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

During last weekend’s junket for The Twilight Saga: New Moon, I got to speak with Twilight producer Wyck Godfrey for an extended amount of time.  Since we covered not only the Twilight franchise, but some of the other major projects he’s developing, I decided to break the interview up into two parts.   I felt this news was worth a separate article since we talked about D.J. Caruso’s adaptation of the video game Dead Space; developing Len Wiseman’s adaptation of the video game Gears of War; and writer-director Dan Rush’s Everything Must Go starring Will Ferrell.

The big news is Everything Must Go starts filming March 1st and he calls the project Leaving Las Vegas with the humor of Bad Santa!  Also, for fans of Gears of War, he says Wiseman is working on a script and “we’ve done a ton of visual references and »

What are Your Favorite Winter Holiday Themed Movies?

26 October 2009 2:39 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

I wasn't quite sure how to properly word the headline for this post considering I want to make sure you understand I am talking about the season pretty much running from Thanksgiving to Christmas, but I also want to make sure you know the film itself doesn't have to necessarily be about the holidays.

Take Die Hard for instance, it's set during Christmas time, but it isn't a Christmas film. However, it fits in with what I am looking for here. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, Eyes Wide Shut, Fanny and Alexander, Batman Returns, Gremlins, The Thin Man and When Harry Met Sally are other examples. Hell, I would even say Rocky IV and Lethal Weapon count. As a matter of fact, I would say the non-Christmas, Christmas movies are the more interesting additions. How about The Shining or even Psycho?

Then, of course, I personally love films such as Love, »

Bruce Willis to star in Kane and Lynch - calls it one of the best action scripts ever!

23 October 2009 4:59 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Bruce Willis will play a mercenary murderer in the film of popular videogame 'Kane and Lynch'.

The film's producer, Adam Askarieh, told Gamedaily.com: "He called it one of the best action scripts he's ever read, and Bruce is an expert in terms of action scripts because he's read everything over the last 20 years.

Willis, 54, will play Adam 'Kane' Marcus, a convicted murderer who is kidnapped by his former employers while being bussed to death row. He teams up with "schizophrenic psychopath" James Seth Lynch in a twist that sees heroes who are as sociopathic as the villains.

Askarieh said: "Kane and Lynch is a great buddy action movie."

"It's the story of a mercenary teaming up with a schizophrenic psychopath to save his wife and daughter".

'Bad Santa' star and Angelina Jolie's ex, Billy Bob Thornton, is rumoured to be in the running to play Lynch. »

Gotta Catch Santa Claus - DVD Review

This year I am already firmly in the Christmas spirit, and it isn't even Halloween yet. I am checking my store for the first arrivals of the crack cocaine of the Yuletide, Egg Nog. I have dug out all my favorite holiday films: "The Ref", "The Bishop's Wife," "Bad Santa" and 'Scrooged" are queued up in a neat stack awaiting a day I can pretend there's real weather in Los Angeles, and be at one with my fireplace and chaise, and hopefully a glass of the Nog. It was only a matter of time before some bright bulb at a studio mined the voice over gold talent of William Shatner, who has a mellifluous and sly delivery honed »

Graham Takes Over Parenthood From Tierney

Production on new TV drama Parenthood is back on track - actress Lauren Graham has stepped in to replace breast cancer sufferer Maura Tierney.

Former E.R. star Tierney was forced to pull out of the upcoming series in July after she was diagnosed with the disease, bringing shooting to a halt.

Helen Hunt had been tipped to pick up where Tierney left off, but Graham has been chosen as the star's replacement.

The Bad Santa star will portray a single mother of two teenage kids who moves in with her parents - the same character Tierney played in the pilot episode.

Craig T. Nelson, Dax Shepard and Bonnie Bedelia are also part of the ensemble cast. »

Michael Jackson's 'This Is It' Trailer: Continuing The Tradition Of King Of Pop On Film

This Sunday's Video Music Awards just got another dose of the King of Pop. On Tuesday, MTV announced that Janet Jackson would be opening up the show with a tribute to her late brother Michael (which is already inspiring speculation and expectations among fans). The film hits theaters on October 28 and will only be around for a limited two week engagement, but this Sunday's Vma show will be the first chance anybody has to check out footage from the movie.

Little League Bank Robbers Make Movie Magic

13 August 2009 10:58 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Adam Sandler's Happy Madison production company is going to tell a story about Orioles baseball player Rick Dempsey-- but it won't have anything to do with Dempsey's World Series experience, or his adult life, for that matter. The story pitched by Johnathon Schaech, Josh Wolf and Richard Chizmar comes from Dempsey's childhood, in which his Little League coach turned out to be a bank robber. Schaech, who you might remember as the egotistical frontman of The Wonders in That Thing You Do!, told Variety ""Our pitch was, it's Catch Me if You Can meets Bad News Bears with a touch of Bad Santa. " And there will be a World Series in the film after all! The coach, John Jennings, led Dempsey's team to the Little League World Championship in 1963, before doing jail time for his life of crime. Columbia Pictures and Happy Madison Buy Untitled Baseball Script

12 August 2009 5:27 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

In a story from Variety it seems that Columbia Pictures and Happy Madison have picked up an untitled script from Johnathon Schaech, Josh Wolf and Richard Chizmar.

The film takes a funny look at the youth of ex-Baltimore Orioles player Rick Dempsey. Apparently, his Little League coach became a bank robber. Dempsey gave input to the writers as they penned the script.

They writers took the story out all over town and really hit it off with Happy Madison and Columbia Pictures.

"Our pitch was, it's Catch Me if You Can meets The Bad News Bears with a touch of Bad Santa" Schaech mused.

The coach of Dempsey's team, John Jennings, took his team to a Little League World Championship in 1963. He did time for robbing banks and then passed away from cancer after his release from prison.

Following the brilliantly off-kilter, Norman Rockwell, everything-is-normal poster, this French trailer for I Love You Phillip Morris, starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, has been released via Europacorp (and comes to us via Jim Carrey's website and the awesome Chud). For those who haven't been following the saga so far (or who didn't catch our previous story before it mysteriously vanished into the ether), the film, based on a true story, features Carrey as Steven Jay Russell, a married cop who turned con-artist to fund his secret gay lifestyle, fell in love with cellmate Phillip Morris (McGregor) in jail, and racked up an impressive hundred-year-plus sentence due to his multiple escape attempts. Hidden in the poster is the line "this really happened. It really did."Written and produced by the team behind Bad Santa, the film caused panic among potential American distributors due to its strong gay content (Variety »
